T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

Hi All,

Put my T31 ST in a couple of weeks ago for it's 10000km service and mentioned to them that I'd noticed some noises coming from possibly the transmission when hopping on and off the throttle (whoop whooping noises, whines, etc). Seemed to be more noticable when the car was warmed up. They said they would look into it.
When I picked the car up they said there definitely were noises (possible from the transfer case) and that they had contacted Nissan Australia about it but that the car was ok to drive and they would contact us with the outcome.
Two weeks went by and finally they rang to say "the part has arrived". I asked "What part?" to which they replied "It appears to be a whole transmission." I was shocked...

I booked the car in at the first available time and it's been in there Mon/Tue/Wed this week getting the transmission changed over... I tried asking them to describe what exactly was wrong with the car but they wouldn't give me any details...

Can only hope it is being dealt with thoroughly...

Very disappointed to be honest. Only taken it on two small trips. One to Mt Mee on graded dirt roads and once on Bribe Is...

Anyone else experiencing transmission noise in their T31 CVT?

Wow. Must be serious for Nissan to change the entire transmission without even being hassled.

I have noticed recently that there is a rattle (not sure how to describe it but rattle seems closest) that can be heard when I come off the throttle which I had assumed was something to do with the gearbox/drive train. It's not loud but I don't recall hearing it when we first had the car. We've had it about a year now and done nearly 30k km. I was going to ask the garage to check it out when it goes in for it's 30k service anyway but I will certainly get it checked out now. Thanks for the heads up and hope you get your car back soon. You wouldn't have though it should take 3 days to change a gear box!

Hopefully its just a one off.

It will be easier for Nissan to change the entire gearbox rather than pull it apart to find out what the problem is.

They will pull it apart but away from customers eyes and ears. Thats why they won't tell you anything.

I agree with Tony and won't be surprised to see this CVT shipped back to Japan for investigation and analysis as to what caused the failure.

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies...

Picked the car up yesterday afternoon. Spoke to the mechanic. He couldn't shed any light on the details of the transmission problem but assured me the car is fine to be taken off-road.
On the service report the issue was referred to as "Internal Fault".
I took it for a drive for an hour out near North Pine Dam and found some dirt track to test things on. Everything appears to be working normally (lock mode, manual shift, hill descent, etc.) and the transmission sounds nice and quiet again.

Just hope I'm not back in to see the mechanic at 20000kms... emoticon

Bruce, I won't mind getting a brand new transmission every 10,000kms if it's covered by warranty emoticon

Sounds like the dealer has been told by Nissan Australia to keep it all hush hush emoticon

Re: T31 - CVT Transmission replacement just after 10000kms

hmm thats pretty strange!
however CVTs are still pretty new in their technology so i think there's still room for improvement.

at the moment they (the bosch models than Nissan use) are limited to about 350Nm of torque - not sure of that number - so they have their limitations.
give it a few years i think we will see drag cars with CVT systems cutting seconds of quartermile times, they are a great piece of technology for sure...

good luck with the new tranny!

sorry to put a dampner on the t31 trans problelms but this is not a one off
am friends with a few techs at the nissan dealer on the gold coast and they have told me that there dealership alone has replaced 5 transmissinons and the number is climbing,
nissan japan has sent there techs and the techs from the company who supply the trans to nissan to the dealership to run tests both on the road and on high tech computers and fitted noise sensors all over the trans to try and here where it is coming from .....will keep u all imformed ..

This is quite scary emoticon I haven't heard any noice come out of my CVT yet, but noticed (twice since i got the car) it was holding the rev higher than normal 2000-3000 rpm @ 100km/h for 1-2 minutes or so. The car has done nearly 10000kms. I think a recall maybe happen soon.

Is there a real need to worry?

I've heard Nissan alone have more than 1 million units running around, you'd think if there was a problem it would have well and truly shown up by now.

Mine is running great, at the moment.
