T31 Auto Transmission - Failsafe mode

Hi all,

While researching something else, I found this little piece in the service manual about the failsafe mode of the T31 automatic transmission.

I don't understand Kev.
Why would it have to go into failsafe when the car slows down, wierd.

Re: T31 Auto Transmission - Failsafe mode

I think its designed to stop people riding the brake and accelerator at the same time in order to save the transmission loads. I've seen plenty of people drive autos with one foot on the brake pedal and the other on the accelerator pedal. Interesting however.

Re: T31 Auto Transmission - Failsafe mode

Well that would explain T31 driver's experiences where they can't replicate the "fault", even on the same incline on a different day. I recommend all T31 to try this "reset" next time it happens to see if it does in fact reset.

Re: T31 Auto Transmission - Failsafe mode

Hi Tony,

How many times have you either done yourself or seen someone have the wheels start spinning due to loss of traction and then have the brakes applied quickly to stop the vehicle from rolling backwards or sliding sideways ?

This could be a scenario which fits the example they give for the operation of failsafe mode.

Kev
You could be right there.
I can't see it being usefull for the car simply rolling backwards.
But I can see it being good for loss of traction around a corner maybe (ie. drifting) but there are already safety systems in place for that.

Sorry Tony, I should have clarified my example by saying "when out 4WDing up a steepish loose incline".
