Does the T31 Auto Diesel Have 6 Gears?
Hi everyone, new member, great site.
While driving my auto T31 Diesel down the highway I noted the revs seemed a tad high over 2000 at 100KPH. I assumed it would be less than 2000. Anyhow I slipped the auto into M- Mode and the gear indicated on the panel showed I was in 5th. Now I was sure the car had 6 gears! I slipped it forward and bingo - 6th gear engaged and revs drop below 2000. The car would not go into 6th when in auto – into the dealer later advised it would only go into 6th at 120KPH – I commented this is an illegal speed in Victoria and most other states – sounds like rubbish to me – why have a 6th gear if you cannot use it in auto. Spoke with the Nissan help line – they said I had to do 115KPH to engage 6th. When advised I had driven the car on the freeway up to 130KPH and still no 6th gear all they say was ‘ahhh’.
If the car will not engage 6th gear in auto then it is debatable whether it’s a 6 gear auto – if you cannot engage the gear legally then it’s useless – and therefore should not be advertised as a 6 gear auto. Now I know I can do the manual thing, but I didn’t buy the car to do that.
A friend has an 08 Xtrail – he said he had no problems with his and I didn’t know what I was talking about – until I explained in detail about the 6th gear – he got his car up to 100 KPH – believed he was in 6th revving over 2000 – selected M-Mode – noted then he was in 5th – pushed the gear lever forward and just like me went into 6th and a corresponding drop in revs – Anyone have similar problems – are there any solutions other than hassling Nissan over inaccurate advertising – not a great thing as other than this it’s a great car.

Haven't I read this somewhere before?
Try not to post the same article in different threads, people do read them, they may not be experiencing the same troubles as you are.

It was in his introduction post (you posted a comment in there) which he was then told to put it in the relevent section.

I'll check when we head up to Glenbrook on Saturday, won't be able to get behind the wheel before then unfortunately....

Re: Does the T31 Auto Diesel Have 6 Gears?
Ah yes, now I remember.
I have just had a quick look at the CVT functions listed in the ESM, (900 files long) and couldn't find anything relating to your question.
Maybe the CVT has to be wound up to a certain RPM to engage 6th gear.
Or maybe your selector sensor isn't working properly.
Have you downloaded the ESM (Electronic Service Manual) ?
Highly reomended for a quick reference to the X Trail.

Re: Does the T31 Auto Diesel Have 6 Gears?
The diesel doesn't have the CVT auto box that the petrol does......

Re: Does the T31 Auto Diesel Have 6 Gears?
I'm not exactly sure what difference you will see between the diesel and petrol as I've not driven the diesel but if I drive at freeway speeds in M6 then the rev's are a little over 2k so this doesn't sound wrong to me. It will run slightly under 2k at this speed in D but that is with the CVT wizardry at work. I'd guess (and correct me if I'm wrong here) that a normal auto that has fixed ratios wouldn't do this so rev's of just over 2k at freeway speeds sounds about right. Alan or one of the the other diesel owners should be able to confirm that.
Also, I have noticed with the CVT that when you switch from D to M it will usually lift the revs and put it into the next ratio down (so if you're at 100km/hr say on a flat freeway which you'd assume is effectively in 6th and put it into M mode it will give you M5, not M6). This would fit with what your friend described as well but I had assumed it was designed this way. The reason you're putting into M mode is likely to be that you want to hold higher rev's up a steep hill or you want more rev's to pass something so it seemed to make sense that it gave you a lower gear. Would the standard auto not work the same way? I'm just guessing here as I've never driven the diesel or the standard auto but what you're describing doesn't seem wrong to me. Admittedly that doesn't tally with Nissan's explanation of needing to break the national speed limits to acheive 6th gear but that does seem a little stupid and I'd therefore question how correct it is.

Re: Does the T31 Auto Diesel Have 6 Gears?
Hi all,
Thank you for the comments - the diesel does not have a CVT - therefore we are probably not comparing 'apples with apples'
Two points:
1. - the Nissan dealer, and Nissan technical support have both advised that you have to be travelling well over 110 to engage 6th in auto - I tried this and it did not work.
2. - is it not somewhat deceptive to advertise, have sale people and pamphlets all talk about a 6th gear - knowing you cannot engage it in auto - sounds to me like its a 5 gear auto and a 6 gear manual!!
Cheers
