Shift Lock Release? How to use?
Shift Lock Release?

OK I was not aware of this feature/problem when I purchased the vehicle, now twice, the automatic transmission has locked in the P position unable to move out.
After some fiddling we managed to get it out using the shift lock release.
Does anyone else have this problem?
What is the process to use this button?
We are going on holidays next week and I dont want to have any more problems.
Happened once when pulled over at the side of the road, then refused to move from P and then again this morning, when hubby tried to back out of the garage but both times managed to get it into D.

This usually happens when you park on an incline and let the car roll on P while being parked.
The correct procedure to park the car is to stop, keep your foot on the brakes, shift to P and apply the hand-brake, only then release your foot from the brake.

Hi zesty,
If you are having trouble with not releasing from P then you might need to get your brake switch checked and adjusted.
The shift-lock is interlocked with the foot brake such that you can only shift out of P when your foot is on the brake first. Sometimes I have been too quick to move the lever before putting my foot on the brake and have to try a second time to shift.

correct way to park for an auto is stop using foot brake, Move selctor into neutral and apply handbrake. Release foot brake - releasing any pressure on the gear box and then move the selector to Park.
This prevents any loading on the Gear Box and also reduces wear on all components along the drive train.

In addition to Jalal's steps, I always pull the handbrake on an extra click after taking my foot off the brake pedal to take up any "slack" in the brake system, as the hand brake only operates the rear brakes. With your foot on the brake pedal, it seems to create a slight lack of tension on the handbrake cable. This tends to help prevent the car moving a little bit while in park on a hill, which causes the gear selector to lock up.
If you're referring to the recessed red button in the centre (gear-selector) console, then you press this down (you may need to use a pen or a key, or some other small object - it seems slightly too small to depress using a finger!) then slide the gear selector lever as normal (and I think you still need to have a foot on the brake pedal, as Kev mentioned) while keeping the button depressed.
Interesting procedure, Andy. I'm sure that would work, and also prove whether the handbrake needs adjustment - when the car creeps down the hill before putting it into Park I will have to read the owner's manual to see if that's the way it's described in there - I've never heard that method before!

The red shift-lock release button is a manual release for when the ignition is not turned on and the release solenoid from the brake pedal cannot be activated.

I think maybe we are being a bit careless with the x and the auto so will certainly take a lot more care when travelling in the future.
