T31 CVT
Done about 3000 kms in the new car now. I have noticed that when you have slowed right down to a bare crawl and then pull away, the car feels like it is trying to pull away in overdrive (if it had one), feels gutless and gives of a familiar underload resonating sound which sounds like it comes from the exahust. So gutless in fact one is left behind ahead and seriously taligated behind.
There are 2 immediate solutions, flick the gear lever over to semi auto and it will nearly always find the right gear or sink the boot. Either of which works fine.
My concern is more about the load being placed on the engine and transmission when it is lugging very heavily. Is this something that should concern me? Anybody else having similar experience?

This sounds weird, I would have the dealer take a look at it.
To me it sounds like the torque converter isn't allowing the layshaft to release, causing it to jerk and become erratic as you say.
Then again, I'm not too sure how the CVT works in comparison to a normal auto.
Best check with Nissan to be sure.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Hooroo, sounds like this is the way the CVT operates and yes I am pretty gentle on the right foot. Thanks for the offer of test but based on what you are saying an extra couple of psi on the right pedal will fix it. As you say it gets up and going PDQ once given a bit of a boot.
Still concerns me that the transmission is put under what feels like high load in higher gear than it should be though, hence why I tend to flick the lever as soon as I feel load.
I remember a couple of years back having a convo with service manager at ARB about auto boxes on SUV's and 4x4's. Basically his advice was to avoid overworking them where ever possible and never use them to slow the vehicle down. His reasoning being that brakes are much cheaper to replace the auto transmissions......

MY T31 has just had a problem with CVT. It has done approx 8000km. I was at the bottom of my up hill driveway I hesitated to allow the garage door to raise and then when I accelerated it started to shudder and would not go uphill. I let it roll back onto the flat road and it had no power at all . I eventually switched off the engine and restarted and it had just enough grunt to make it into the garage. I had it towed to the dealer yesterday and today I picked it up ok. The head mechanic said the problem appeared to be the stepper motor which controls the position of the CVT pulleys was at position 168 out of a max of 170 which meant it was in a very high gear. He has checked it with the analyser and there were no errors so he cleaned the contacts on the motor and could find no apparent cause. He has not encountered this problem before . I will just have to suck it and see. I was lucky this time as it happened at my house. Fingers and toes crossed.

Yes i also hope it doe'nt happen again as I might not be so lucky to have it fail at home. The forum is a great tool to keep owners aware of what others are experiencing and swap ideas not mention keeping the dealers honest. I am always amazed at the time Jalaski gives to the forum ..... is there more than one !!!

I was wondering if it were to happen again, maybe you should try and put it into manual and see if the selector readout displays 1st, would be interesting.

I cant remember what it displayed but I tried it in manual and it made no difference. The mechanic suggested that if it happened again to take a battery lead off and on.
