I borrowed both an Outlander and an X Trail from respective dealers for several hours and brought them back home. Although the Outlander had a good level of equipment, the internal build quality was not as good in my opinion. The Outlander had only done 700km but there were rattles and squeaks all around. Didn't like its split tailgate because you can't lower it if you have a towbar on. It was then we decided the X Trail was for us and we've been very happy with it. We definitely would have checked out the diesel if we'd known about it when we bought ours in April.

Chris - re Outlander diesel arrival in Oz
I did quiz him but he could not give a specific date - maybe first/second quarter of next year.
How did you find the interior load space of the Forester compared to the X-trail? I think the X-trail is larger and the seats fold properly to give a really flat floor.
I also think with the hot summers we get here in the West, the diesel should cope admirably with the a/c load.

Hi guys,
Yeah I've heard of people doing that Jeff, it's a good idea, as you can't really get an idea on what a car is going to be like in your life by just going on a 15min test drive. I must say I liked the kit in the Outlander, and the engine and ride were nice. But the build quality and price put me off. The salesman said the price was neg, which means to me that they can't sell as many of the V6's anymore... not at 50k.
Yeah never thought of the issue with the split tailgates.. I can see how that may be a problem. For some reason, the salesman never mentioned it, who would have thought...
We found the space in the boot of the Forrester to be smaller than the X-trail John. Not Tiguan small, but not as big as the X-Trail or Outlander. Probably would have been okay for us, as we only have a large dog, and no kids (yet). The seats go down, but not flat, I think... I know the outlander and X-trail do go up so the floor is flat. The X-trail is larger than the Forrester, yeah. Although the Forrester is quite roomy in the rear seats.
Judging by what I can find on the net about the Diesel Outlander (which isn't much), I think next year is most likely as well... the dealer knew nothing, just said that maybe a diesel will come out. Obviously they just want me to buy the petrol one...
Will take the X-Trail TI and TL out for a spin over the next two weeks, and then make our decison at the end of the month... but it will be an X-trail we've decided.

As explained in my intro, my 09 T31 diesel manual Xy is the first time I have owned a AWD, diesel and not having a manual for 18 years. I have had some reservations on the performance and driving of the Xtrail as reviews, brochures and salesmen are only worth so much until you get the experience.
The Xtrail replaced a Honda Odyssey, which I thought was a great family car, and won out against the Forester (not impressed with the size), and Outlander (looked good but didn’t like the tail gate) mainly due to the diesel option. The TS also had better features compared to the petrol ST model.
Today we went for a 400km round trip from Melbourne to Marysborough which was on freeway and country roads and the overall performance of the Xy impressed me..... here are some of our findings.
Economy: Up to today I had driven 1300km around the suburbs and CBD and averaged 8.4l/100km (33.6mpg). As compared to what I had read on the forum I was concerned about this economy, but compared to the Odyssey, 8.4 was way ahead of the 14.2. On the way to Marysborough I averaged 6.4l/100km (44.1mpg), but on the way back via Ballarat, I averaged 5.8l/100km (48.7mpg). I generally kept to the speed limit or was over by no more than 5kmh. I couldn’t believe the achieved economy and in actual fact drove my other half and son crazy as I kept reading out the fuel efficiency. A tip that I picked up from the forum was to change gear around 2200rpm which I did, and I also stayed in 5th when slowing down to 60kmh.
Cruise control: The cruise control on the Honda Odyssey always struggled to kick in properly going up hills and tended to go past the set speed. I had travelled the roads before in the Honda but the Xy cruise control kept the speed going up hills (in 6th gear) and generally retained the speed going downhill. I used the cruise control on different gears at going through different road speed limits and I don’t recall having to use the break to keep the car within the set speed limit… an annoying problem with the Odyssey as you had to reset the cruise control.
Performance: As mentioned the Xy is a little slow in 1st and 2nd gear, but the acceleration in 5th and 6th was impressive, particularly when passing other vehicles. The acceleration kick was there when needed.
Handling: I had reservations on its handling and cornering, but had no problems even on wet roads. The car handled well by using the appropriate gear when going from 100kmh to 45kmh around same corners.
Comfort: From a driver’s view the seat was comfortable enough and the lumbar support was good. I have concerns that the seat will not be as supportive in a few years time as it seems too soft. One of the problems though for the manual is the drink holders behind the gear shift. A 500ml bottle standing up straight can get in the way when changing gears.
I also agree with the comments that controls on the steering wheel should be illuminated when the lights are turned on.
My other half always falls asleep within 30 minutes of being a passenger in the car. She found that the head rest in the Xy was slightly uncomfortable and we will have to experiment with the right head support to allow for a comfortable snooze.
Overall ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I was impressed with the performance of the Xtrail, and the economy was more than impressive .,… I am going to top up the fuel in the coming days to confirm the economy.
I cant wait for a trip to Adelaide (750km) in the coming months … I reckon I should easily get there without filling up, or I will be pushing it.
