Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
As the title says, I find 1st difficult to select sometimes, particularly after being in reverse. Had the dealer check it at the 1000km check but they said it might just be a bit stiff because its new.
Its quite annoying, generally when it won't go into 1st i put it into 2nd and then back into first and its ok, but all this takes time when you are reversing out onto a busy road for example.
Anyone else have this kind of problem?

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
My Triton won't go in 1st unless I'm stopped lol.
It might be stiff like the dealer says.
I used to drive my Dad's Toyota Hiace van. It never went in reverse unless you went in 4th first.
Do you need to take off in 1st in the TD Exy? I find I'm starting in 2nd most of the time unless I'm on an incline.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
Can't say I have had any issue getting into first at all - in fact it is quite slick.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
Hmmm...must be just mine then. I'll leave it till then 10,000 service (which i'm getting to quite quickly, 3000km down now) and see how its going then.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
It sounds to me like when you come from reverse, the selector isn't releasing enough to engage first gear.
I would probably wait another 1000kms then if it is still doing it, take it back to the dealer and demand that they look at it.
If it is stiff it should be ok by then.
But if not, you'd probably be doing more damage leaving it for the 10000 service.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
Hey Glen,
It's the car, I've test driven two different T31 diesels, and both were the same. My wife and I got used to it pretty quickly though.
Cheers,
Chris.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
Took a mate for a spin the other night and after 15 mins gave him the driver's seat.
First comment - oh it's manual, so not sure if that is a reflection on my gearchanging or the smoothness of the clutch/box.
You get used to the short clutch engagement very quickly.

Re: Manual - hard to select first gear sometimes
I concur! The clutch does seem abrupt when you first drive it, but I got used to it very quickly. And yes generally my gearbox is slick too. But just sometimes, first gear just won't go in.
