Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?

I hafta add that most diesels have a "fuel shutoff solenoid"....this controls your fuel rack via the key.(turns it ON prior to start, with injectors)
Normally if you turn to "accesories" and not "start" you will hear noise,,and vice versa. Generally takes 3 to 5 seconds. Easy way to check is pop your bonnet, get someone to turn thr key OFF after 15 seconds of accessories, and hear the solenoid whine.....
hope this helps

Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?

As I said in my previous post, i get the noise without putting the key in at all. Simply by unlocking the car with the remote, after a while I hear it.....

Mine did this today, when the car was unlocked first thing in the morning, but had been not driven or had the key inserted.

Oh well, the car is still awesome.

Cheers,

Chris.

Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?

I checked mine this morning, didnt make any noises (That i could hear anyway) when i unlocked it. Only noises were the after turning the key (fuel thingy etc).

I've got into the habit of waiting until the glow plug light goes out now too before cranking it - esp on cold mornings..

You might have the special model that has the inbuilt expresso machine - just need to find it now!!

I think it is the cooling pump, mine only does it after I shut down!

How long does your glow plug light stay on for? mine is less then a second, you really have to be looking to see it!

Normally for about a second. On the really cold mornings it can stay on for a couple of seconds.

I notice that i get the original noise if i turn my key to 'Run' and then back off, definitely sounds like a pump. Whatever it is it mustn't be thermostatically controlled as my engine was stone cold.

Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?

I think "x trail enthusiast" is on the right track. I was puzzeled by this myself and in the manual as he says there is a separate turbo cooling pump. I did try to find more info on this in the manual but couldn't (other than a schematic which refered to it). I assume it is electrical - on a timer. V good idea if true! On my old Mazda 6 the hand book did tell you to let the turbo cool down before switching off (something I still do) but there seems to be no warning in the x trail manual, perhaps this is why. The fact that a Nissan teck doesn't know doesn't surprise me as these days so much is controlled by the CPU and short of a detail description by the software engingeer we will never know. (I've been trying to understand the logic of the DPF).

I also get another - different odd noise which this thread might be mixing with, when I close any of the 5 doors I get a short / faint "twanging" noise from the door area? Is it mechanical, or some solenoid operating.

I didn't have to wait for the turbo to cool down on my Y60 (97) Patrol. And that was a mechanical diesel motor, no CPU.

The turbo simply cooled down when you drove in surburban streets.
The turbo kicked in at around 1900 RPM and when it was less, it started to cool itself down.
I would imagine that the Xy is similar.

The problem is on the motorways, hours of 70mph+ then pull into a service station and your at 0mph in about 500 yards. I cringe when I see cars pull up and the drivers switch off immediately.

Re: Buzzing noise after shutting down the engine?

Hi Chris,

This buzzing noise after engine shut-down is indeed the cooling pump of the turbo and this has been confirmed to us by Nissan and discussed in THIS thread.
