I note that it says for the Diesel X Trails from Feb 2009......I wonder if it will do the earlier ones (mine is July 2008) as I am under the impression that nothing had been changed in the latest shipment of diesel cars.

I find this odd that a turbo timer has been released for the diesel nearly 1 year on.
Could it have something to do with the DPF.
Maybe leaving the engine run for a couple of minutes after stopping can burn off any excess build up.
There must be a reason for it otherwise they would have come standard with a timer in them.

This turbo timer is suitable for ALL T31 diesel models. Nothing has been changed since its introduction in Jul '08.

I reckon it has taken so long to introduce an xtrail specific turbo timer kit due to testing and development. As for the argument that they should have come standard from the factory, oh well, many other things should have come standard too, but car manufacturers always look to produce a car with as little expense as possible and cost cutting is not something new to us.

I thought that the pump that runs when you shut down your engine pumps coolant (or oil) around the turbo, doing the same thing?
I would have thought excessive idling the engine would make things worse for the DPF if anything.

Gee you can tell who the first time diesel owners are on this forum 
As someone who has owned diesels before, I have always recommended AND practiced the act of letting the engine idle for at least a minute or 2 during EVERY shut down. I simply let it idle, get my stuff out of the car or put my coat on etc and by the time I`m ready, at least 1 minute is up, sometimes longer. This lets all coolants, oils and everything stabilise AND cools the turbo down. The idling exhaust which drives the turbo becomes cooler as the engine stabilises. There is no coolant or anything inside a turbo....if there is....i`d be worried.
As for it being included with the car, I disagree. It`s not a big diesel like some of the bigger 4WD`s have which may require a longer cool down time. I definitely let it idle longer if it`s been working hard like towing or whatever, but Nissan recommend in their manual to let it idle for a few minutes during harsh driving and towing....so they`ve warned you about it.
Sometimes people need to take responsibility for their own actions and decisions, and I think before people buy diesels, they should research them and try to understand a little about them and what`s best to treat them good. People like my brother jump in my car, and hate it because it has a top speed of 20kmh in 1st gear, and how he then claims diesels are crap because his petrol car does 70kmh in 1st. He just doesn`t "get" diesels.
I personally believe a 5 minute timer on EVERY shutdown is totally unnecessary and a waste of fuel. This is basically just some company trying to make a buck, and if people buy, then good luck and I wish you and that company well.....but it is definitely a more of a "want" item rather than a "need" item.

And that is all that's required, but for someone who tends to forget, this gadget is the perfect protection. Not to mention that you can simply forget to do that if you pull-up at a servo during a highway run to fill-up and this is where it can get tricky.

Doing that at home in your own driveway is fine, but leaving the car idling un-attended or by being more than 3 meters away from an idling car is illegal and this is where there is confusion about turbo timers being illegal when they're not. What's illegal is leaving the car idling un-attended.

Yeah but after you`ve been doing this for a few weeks, it becomes habit. And sure, there may be times where you may miss letting it idle, like your example when stopping to fill up, but I feel that as long as you do it the majority of the time, then it is better than not doing it at all.

True but personally I'd rather play it safe and protect the car for as long as possible and if this means I can invest in a little reminder for me not to worry about remembering this part of the process, I will gladly do it. Sometimes there are far too many things on ones mind and you can simply forget to apply the habit in practice. Forgetting it one time will surely not cause a problem, but doing that more often will in the long run.
The above is even more applicable to new diesel owners who have an old habit to break and a new one to get used to.

You'd think in this day and age that somebody would have improved the turbo timer from the technology that was around when I built them nearly 30 years ago (when you couldn't get a cheap off the shelf timer). I'd like a timer that knew how I'd been driving and then work out how long the timer needed to run (if at all) rather than the mandatory settings that everybody seems to think is OK. Also I'm yet to see a turbo time that has the same connections as the auto run units I install in emergency vehicles that shut the motor down if somebody tries to drive off.
