First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
Picked up my new TL manual Diesel last week and today was the first opportunity for a decent drive. This is my first XTrail and also my first diesel car. (I have had trucks and vans before). The engine I think is a sweet little number. Even tho it only has a couple hundred Kms on the clock, it feels very free revving and you can feel the turbo kick in around 1800. The clutch is quick to take up but you soon get used to it and apart from at idle you don't really notice the noise or vibration that some diesels can have.
It will take a little while to find the best throttle/gear combos to get the best out of this unit but I think changing up at 2200 - 2500 or a bit higher in the lower gears seems good. Our drive today consisted of both city and open road and I was impressed with the driveability as a whole. In the city traffic I didn't get above3rd or 4th - that was just nice to keep the revs around that 2000 mark allowing plenty of punch for when I needed it and it certainly can get up and go from there. On the open road with the cruise set 6th about 2100/2200 at 110 or so it's effortless and quiet.
The next test for it will be early next week when I go on an 1100 km trip. I have already spoken with my local dealer about this because it won't have anywhere near 1000 b4 I go and will have 400 - 500 more when I come back. they don't seem to have an issue with it. ( any comments about that would be welcome)this trip is almost all open road so should give a good opportunity to see just how well it handles - I'm really looking forward to it.

Re: First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
Its good to hear people enjoying their new toys.
There is nothing like driving a new Xy and there is so much to learn about them in this forum.
The 1000km service is more or less just a checkover of all components, nuts and bolts, that sort of thing. There wouldn't be a problem even if you took it in at 200km.
The clock turns rather quickly on the Xy when you enjoy driving it so much, mine is just about to hit 40000.

Re: First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
Well I'm back from my trip. This is a regular trip for me. I car pool with a couple of other people to get to our worksite. Between us we drive an Exy, a Diesel turb Pajero and a Kluger. My previous car was a Lancer VRX but it was just too small for extended trips, nice car that they are and my aging 1988 3.0l 5sp Skyline with 500,000 km ( approx)just too old ( I still have it for a knock around car).
The exy performed beautifully as expected. Once on the open road in sixth, set the cruise at 115km/hr(2250rpm) and just enjoyed the drive. Effortless, comfortable and quiet. the first part of the journey was on a part tank of fuel which had both city and country driving and some with a light trailer. The trip computer said 8.5l/100km before I refuelled. The next on a full tank and ideal conditions absolutely amazed me 7.5l/100km at 115km/hr. i can't be sure of the accuracy of the speedo, but I get the feeling that it is not far out at all. I couldn't make it all the way home on this so refulled a couple hundred km's out (same place I fuelled b4) and tried to get the same pump to get a more consistent fill(pump not working). With a slight tail wind 6.9 would you believe!!!! I think the actual figures may show a little different but we will see in the coming months.
As far as comfort goes - well its as comfortable as the other 2 vehicles in the front, probably more comfortable than the Paj in the rear and a little less than the Kluger in the rear seat. Keep in mind these a three different classes of car.
I did find a little rattle but figured that - well- the loudness of the rattle is inversely proportional to the number on the volume control of a nice sound system!!!???. Turned out that one of the nuts holding the cargo barrier in place had come undone slightly - problem fixed.
I now understand why people like 'em.!
Regards
Ian

Re: First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
I am due for a 40000 service shortly and will ask if the speedo can be recalibrated. Error that Esme states is correct and makes a difference when you set the cruise on long runs.

Re: First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
They will tell you its within acceptable tolerances, I think its around 3 - 4%.
If you want to calibrate your speedo, you will have to get it done yourself from a transmision/speedo mob.

Re: First Drive of X Trail manual diesel
Hi Guys,
Please start shifting these discussions (like the speedo...etc) into corresponding threads on the forum. This thread was mainly left open in this forum section to give other diesel xtrail owners a view of the first test drive impressions.
P.S. Nissan will NOT re-calibrate the speedo on any car. It's within the allowable 10% difference as stated already and sometimes changing tyre size can correct this variation for you.
