Re: How did you find this forum?

It certainly helps to be number 3 on the Google search engine emoticon

Just type "Australian X-Trail" and have a look emoticon

Actually I found it pretty hard to Google the forum.

Yes if you type "Australian X-Trail" in then the forum comes up (at #1 when I checked).

But if you select the "pages in Australia" button - it doesn't come up for quite a few pages if at all.

Also if you type "Nissan X Trail Owners" or "Nissan X Trail Forum" - it also takes many pages in Google to come across it.

I found the forum by "accident" one night when I was researching in front of the TV and was just flipping way bay into the Google results for the X Trail. Was at least page 8 or more before I came across it. Most people would have given up by then.

When I tried to find it again a few weeks later - it took a lot of searching even though I knew what I was looking for. Eventually I found the forum thru the Australian X Trail Shop link that came up.

Why does "Australian X-Trail" work ? Cos those keywords are in the domain name and title - one of the key areas Google indexes first.

Why doesn't anything else really work? Because on the home page there is no text. It's all pictures and graphics - and Google cant read pictures. Hence 100's of other pages and sites get listed in Google before this one once you stray from those "Australian X-Trail" keywords.

To really improve the results and get found a LOT more - simply add some text to the home page - maybe replace a few of the spinning logos with some heading text. Or add some copy to the page explaining what the site is about - including a few keywords that Google can read and see what the site is about.

Sorry for the long ramble but just thought it might help. Web design and Google stuff is my main job so if you need a bit of help let me know.

Cheers

Which "home page" are you referring to Michael? The Main Site being main.australianxtrail.com or the www.australianxtrail.com?

The second one is just a cover page of our site with a gallery display, but it holds our main domain name (the registered domain)

It also includes many meta tags identifying the forum and I am positive the search engine picks-up on those.

As for the Main Site (main.australianxtrail.com) it has the meta tags too but it also has many xtrail subjects linked directly to the forum.

While the search engine (Australian Pages) may push our forum down a little, nearly all of the subjects covered in the forum are indexed and submitted to the search engine.

It'll be great if you can let us know how to improve our exposure to the search pages in Australia. Please email me at the admin mailbox.

Hi Jalal

Just finished off sending you an email about some ideas. Just wanted to cover the highlights here.

As the site is run within a Frame of australianxtrail.com - Google doesn't really get to see the content much or the Meta tags. Choosing View Source from either www. or main. - all you see is a blank page.

Meta Tags are good to have (Title and Description are the main ones - Keyword Meta tags largely ignored in favour of whats actually on the page) - but you still need to have visible content on the page to back them up.

When people select Pages From Australia from searching within Google - Google lists sites with .au as a domain first. You would need to get a .au domain to be found better in local searches.

There is more in the email for you to consider.

Obviously Google is picking up some of the site - that's how many of us found it. But a few changes would make it a lot more visible to Google and generate more traffic for you.

Michael

Re: How did you find this forum?

Thanks Michael,

I'll have a look and respond accordingly.

Am afraid the .au domain is not an option I would cosnider, as it is limited to businesses and corporations, which we're not. Furthermore, changing an already established and well known domain name in favour of the .au one would cause a LOT of headaches to everyone involved.

Re: How did you find this forum?

Jalal,
Could we register a .org.au which redirects to the .com ?
Then Google would list the .org.au higher and then everyone would be redirected to the .com which is the actual website and forum.
