Re: Tom Tom 340

Dennis, the Tom Tom 910 was and still is a Good GPS, Alot of Retailers hate stocking the top of the range model (this is more so the case in country areas) due to stock turn over being lower than the cheaper models that usually walk out the door. I remember selling a few of them and quite often had to stock transfer them from metro store or ordering from supplier as the franchisee didn't like us to keep stock.

As for the speed zone difference I've noticed a quite a few streets around the Gold Coast already where the GPS says it is 50 but the speed limit sign on the road says 60. I guess end of day GPS units are still not perfect.

For those of you with T31's where do you position your GPS?
I've seen a couple of T30's with GPS directly in front of the steering wheel, I have a feeling that is actually illegal but maybe thinking of an overseas law and not Australian Law

G'day Ross & Maria

Before I sought and bought another window mounted (suction) bracket, I used to place my Garmin Nuvi 760 behind the steering wheel (directly in front of the instrument panel). However, this position blocks out a couple of warning lights.

Now that I have the bracket (complete with charger cable), I have it suction mounted on the window on the right hand side (just near the forward pillar). This way, it is not obstructing vision of the road ahead but I can glance at it momentarily when necessary.

I'm the same as Stephen, I keep mine in the bottom R/H corner of the windscreen also.
I find its out of the way enough not to take your eyes off the road.
As well as being right handed, its easier to operate the GPS in that position.

I suction mount mine to bottom right hand corner of windscreen also. It does not interfer with your sight of the road etc. Also easy to use right handed.

But we all know nobody would ever operate their GPS whilst driving (or us their mobile for that matter)

Re: Tom Tom 340

Our stupid government in Ontario have just past a law... no use of electronic devices while driving.... they were going after the cell phone users... they now grouped the electronic devices as, DVD, GPS, Cell Phones, and anything else that could make the driver take his hands away from the steering wheel AND it is up to the officer to make that decision.

Now this open up a big can of worms.... what about the radio or drinking that cup of joe/water/pop.....

This law was created so that a driver is not distracted from paying attention to his driving.

What about talking to the other people in the car... isn't that a distraction....

There is going to be a major battle going on in court, if and when they do find someone.

I think it is going to be hard to enforce but time will tell.

Same here, but limited the new law to mobile phones which have GPS built into it. That means you won't be able to put a mobile phone which has a GPS application up on the window.

Of course Alan,
I wouldn't do that, I'm a good boy. Us builders never use the phone in the car, emoticon it hardly rings anyway. emoticon

Hi Michael,
It is also against the law here to have any display device such as a dvd player or tv screen operational in a vehicle where it is visible to other drivers and cause a distraction.

But yet, manufacturers here are selling vehicles with large 10" ceiling mounted dvd screens for rear-seat viewing, which is easily viewed through the rear and side windows by other vehicles.

I personally am waiting for someone to be dragged into court for causing an accident by having one of these devices in-use while driving.

I thought this only applied to the dash mounted DVD/TV screen where they can't and shouldn't be operated unless the handbrake is on. Meaning not to cause any distraction to the driver.

How is this different to the GPS screen you have on the dash that is visible to other drivers as well? If someone has the time to look through the windows of other cars while driving and notice the DVD players and screens that are in the other vehicles, they shouldn't be sitting behind the steering wheel, because obviously their eyes are not fixed on the road a head!

I have no problems whatsoever with rear mounted DVD players in my car and I don't mind seeing them being used by other cars either. Modern age technology and entertainment will soon see TV screens plastered everywhere, so are you gonna try and catch a glimpse of every TV screen you pass on the road? emoticon
