Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
Howdy All,
I picked up my '08 Diesel TL 6 speed manual and can't seem to get out of it! The options that i had included from the dealership were:
Driving Lights
Nudge Bar
2000kg Tow Kit
Tinted Windows
Floor mats
I have been a fan of X-Trails for a long time, i had a T30 Ti-L which i had done a few modifications to, and 105,000km in just under 3 years. The T30 would be a hard car to beat - it was comfortable, powerfull, and felt right. My kids liked the T30 and were sad the day i said it wouldnt be coming back on the day i was taking delivery of the T31. That sadness was short lived when they saw the T31!.
I need to do a few mods sooner rather than later (side steps, dvd player, bash plate) so ill be saving my pennies and grabbing them from the online shop.
Here are some pics:
The old T30 where i left it parked - sad indeed!
Sadness quickly turned to glee when i spotted my new T31
Within 24 hours she was quite dirty and sitting up on sellicks hill (looks like the windows desktop hills in the background!)
Another pic from up on the hill - mates new SR5 spoiling an otherwise perfect view!
Ill keep adding info here as i venture into the new car - and post pics of adventures it goes on!

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
1000km service already (just over a week). Guys at lakeside had it knocked over in about 45mins so i had a coffee and watched the morning news.
I'm averaging 7.0l/100 (first fill of the tank saw me fill it with 53litres and i had just knocked over 700km, topped up today for the weekend with 20 something litres and i had done 300 and something km... thats unreal for city driving, and for someone who is used to driving an auto! The performance is exceptional - I cant wait to see what happons as she gets a few more km on her.
I received my stickers from Jalal and i promptly put the forum sticker on the drivers side of the rear window. Thanks!
Got a quote from Nissan for side steps as my kids have trouble climbing in; $785 fitted... will have to compare that to the other forum thread.
Loving it !
Cheers,
Andrew

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
Good stuff Andrew,
Don't rush with your purchase of the side steps, read-up on our forum and see how you can save and there is a big chance, I'll be importing different styles of T31 side steps soon, just waiting on some finances to settle.

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
We went out camping at Mount Crawford over the weekend. Lots of pine tree logging tracks and a few puddles. Its been fairly dry, but we had fun all the same.
The diesel is very capable on the soft dirt and steep climbs, and looks the part too!
By taking out the boot floor boards, and the tray, i found that my family tent slides exactly into one side, and the esky on the other very neat!
Need to get a bash plate first - i hit some soft edges a few times and got a bit nervous!
Took a few videos, ill stick them on utube when i get a chance.

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
First mod went in over the wekend.. a set of leather headrests with 9" LCD screens so the kids can watch movies while we are driving. I am using a 160gig HDD in a USB div-x player for proof of concept. The kids use wireless headphones so that i don't have to listen to the movies while driving. First run down to the city was strange - I'm used to the "blah blah blah, so and so did this, yarp yarp wahh wahh" from the back seat, but there was nothing but golden silence, and the occasional laugh from the movie.
I decided to use the Hard Drive Div-x player as i have tried cd's and DVD's in the car but they don't last very long.
I'm having an issue with ground feedback, but hope to get that fixed soon.
Took a drive down to the Murray Mouth (near Goolwa) on Sunday - beautiful day. I have been to the mouth fishing before in a mates SR-5 - never took the T30 as it is waaay too boggy for a non-diesel. With much convincing from my friend we set off to the mouth in my T31 and his SR5. Just before we got to the really soft sand i let the tyres down to 15-18psi using Staun Tyre deflators.

This pic is just as we were about to get to the boggy bits, i didnt get any pics of going through the soft sand as i was too busy driving! If anyone has been through there you will know how soft and boggy it is, quite challenging!

I turned the ESP off, engaged 4WD lock and got it into second gear, around 2000rpm and kept it below 40kph. I must say im impressed with the torque... at times my belly was scraping along the top of the deep wheel ruts, but the T31 just kept going. (reminder to get a bash plate from the x-trail shop!) Raising the suspension would be good too, (eventually) but the car pulled thru the sand fine.
There was a Patrol cab-chasis behind me and he seemed impressed also.
When we got to the rise just before the mouth i stopped to check for damage on the harder sand - nothing had fallen off. The Patrol driver asked how it was going and was glad to hear i was cruising thru the really soft sand.
We kept going right around to the mouth, and did some fishing. Had to take this pic with the dredger in the background to prove that i made it!

While there i had a look around - nope no other 'soft roaders' in sight. A couple of guys came over and asked how the x-trail had made it through the sand - and the obligatory Diesel discussion followed.
After catching some salmon and eating them on the BBQ, losing a game of cricket we head back to the Goolwa beach to let the kids run on the sand hills and fly the kites.

I did notice a landcruiser bogged in the soft sand as we came back - silly bugger had stopped right in the bad bit!
Awesome day, and im very happy with the torque of the T31 Diesel - certainly proving itself capable and fuel efficient aswell!

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
Ahh i thought there had to be a few Xtrails together to qualify as a trip?
I think an SA X-Adventure might be in order, will post expressions of interest in the other section!

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer
Our 4WD club has been down there a couple of times with all sorts of AWD vehicles & we all made it through OK, including 3 or 4 T30 Xtrails.

Only if you want to claim it in the State Challenge by having 2 or more Forum members.
Any Xtrail trip can be written in the Trip Reports thread, just search to see if the location has been covered before and add your experience to that thread if you find one or create a new thread if the location has not been visited before.
