Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer

Hi Andrew

Contemplating a club trip in about rwo weeks which will have some 'mud' challenges.

Just wondering if your Tl came with the 'skinny' Dunlops with the highway pattern? While this is OK for sand/beach work with the air let down, I am not so sure about clay/mud/gravel.

I am picking up a 2nd hand set of 16x7s & will shod them with some decent A/T tyres - A/T 17's seems to have virtually no choice.

Your thoughts appreciated.

John

Howdy John,

Yep i have the Dunlop ST20 215/60/17 which i guess are the standard on the TL. I had a look around when i had my T30 Ti for decent offroad tyres and kept going back to the Pirelli Scorpians as i mostly just drive to work.

I'd love a set of decent AT's aswell - but cant find anything worth getting excited about - maybe some coopers or Bridgestones but they are mega $$$?

Where did you find your second hand set? Ive seen piles of tyres and rims at the Jap Import places - i might have to drop in and ask if they have anything suitable - never know if you never ask!

I'd be happy to go with the tyres that are on there - if all fails we can hone our "snatch strap" skills emoticon

What sort of l/km are you getting in your TL? Around city driving to work mine sits on around 6.8L/100 which is about half what my T30 was doing...

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer

city without any freeway/highway 7.7
open road 7.1

Got the rims/tyres off eBay - it was a local Perth pickup literally 10mins from work sometimes you get lucky. Mate of mine is taking the tyres so I can spend a little on the AT rubber. The Scorpions alway sget good write ups but they are expensive. Thinking of BFGs or Kumho's.

Been reading up about the front recovery point on the T31 - I would have thought they would have provided two not one.

Will be up for the 10000 service soon.

John

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer

You must drive a bit different to me.. im getting 7l/100 driving to work (South Road in adelaide is only stop-start city driving for about 50km each way every day). I'm still yet to get time to go for a decent long drive on a freeway to see how that fairs..

I filled up on friday because the computer told me it couldnt work out how far i had till empty - i put in 53L to fill it up and i had travelled 760km which works out a smidge under 7l/100. If i still had 12L in the tank im guessing i could easily do 900km or so esp if i get out on an expressway! Works well for me - i only have to fill up every 2 weeks instead of 1 now!

Maybe i need some driving lessons from Jalalski to get that engine working!

I'm on about 4500km now so a little while to go for the 10000.

BFG's would be awesome, and king springs to get a little more height.. Yours are 16" rims? Im fairly sure mine are 17"??

I've put an enquiry in for a bash plate and still looking for some rock sliders.

I carry a few tools, kit in the back as well as the two drawers.

The BFGs look the part on 16" Nissan rims I got secondhand. Off for a bush run tomorrow and will report on the performance of the tyres and strut bar.

Dronus
Its a shame you can't mount the ariel on the driving light bar, it looks a little unsightly with that clamp on the top bar.
Maybe get it chromed.

edit, spelling

Tony,

I have a stainless steel mount that goes at the top edge of the nudge bar and I think it is the best spot for a UHF antenna, as you want it be nice and high. Mounting it on the light bar in the nudge is a bit too low I reckon.

Re: Dronus's Diesel Dirt Destroyer

Heya Tony, Yep it is Stainless like Jal mentioned so its all shiney, here are some pics i just took to show. I took the antenna off so i didnt poke my eye out.. emoticon

I put tape underneath the clamp to protect the bull bar and flexible conduit to protect the cable.

I haven't worked out how to get the antenna cable through the firewall yet there isn't enough room under the bonnet to swing a cat. I have to run some 6mm wire to the back for the fridge, so ill get it done at the same time.

Ill also get a smaller antenna, that 7.5 db one is huge. Perhaps ill get one the same time that i get the new UHF. Its on the back burner till next month, ive got a few things i need to get from the x-trail shop first!
