Behind the Walls of Ingleside

This story takes place between Anne's House of Dreams and Anne of Ingleside...

Jem is 8 years old
Walter is 7
Nan and Di are 5

No one else is born yet....

Later that evening everyone was in bed, including the doctor and his wife, when a yell rang throughout the house.

“MOMMY!!!!!! DADDY!!!!!” Di came running into their room.

“What is it?! What’s wrong?!” her parents asked concernedly.

Di climbed in between them and looked up at them with teary eyes.

At this point Anne and Gilbert were almost panicking. After a few chocked sobs and sharp breaths Di let the story pour out.

“There…Is a…” Di hiccupped.

“Shh, calm down. There’s a what?” Anne said gently.

“A big” hiccup, “BIG” hiccup, “spider on the wall” hiccup, “next to my bed.” Di explained between hiccups. Anne and Gilbert both let out a sigh of relief.

“Is that all sweetie?” Anne inquired carefully. To Di this was huge. She hated spiders more than Nan, and that was saying a lot. Times like these always made Anne secretly wonder if Gilbert had been terrified of spiders.

“Yeah…” Di breathed. Anne and Gilbert got out of bed and walked over to Nan and Di’s room tiredly. Di stayed close to her mom and squeezed her hand as she dared walk back into the room that contained the “big, scary spider”. Gilbert went in first, tissue ready, and found the spider only to be a small daddy longlegs.
“Is it gone?” Di whimpered.

“Yeah, it’s gone,” Gilbert replied, tossing the spider-tissue into the wastebasket. Anne smiled, she loved these little moments. After Di was tucked in by Anne both parents kissed her good night. Nan was still sleeping; it would take a rocket to wake her up. That was probably the only thing she inherited from her father. Anne and Gil went back to bed and slept soundly the rest of the night.

“Morning!” Nan said cheerfully.

“Morning…” came the response from her family.

“Why are you so happy today?” Jem grumbled, he wasn’t in a very good mood. Today he had a test and he stayed up late studying for it. Well, he was up ‘til nine, and that’s pretty late for a second grader.

Di answered for her, “Today were starting a project with the green apples.” In their preschool there were 4 different groups, the red, green, yellow, and blue apples. They split the kids in the preschool up so they were easier to handle. Red and Yellow were the younger kids and Green and Blue were the older ones. Different groups often worked together and everyone saw each other at recess. Nan and Di were blue apples.

“Well that’s great,” said Anne smiling.

“That’s not why she’s happy,” explained Diana, “She’s happy ‘cause David Parker is in the Green Apples.”

“David Parker?” Echoed Gilbert, who had heard a boy’s name mentioned and popped his head back into the kitchen.

“Yeah, Nan looooves him,” teased Di, although it was the truth.

“Do not!” cried a furiously blushing Nan.

“Do too! You told me yourself you thought he was the cutest of all the boys!”

Nan tried to hide her blushes and furrowed her brow at Di. Then she ran over to her mom and buried her face in her stomach. Anne put her hand on Nan’s tiny head and stoked her chestnut curls. She was beaming. Her little Nan had her first crush. Gilbert, however, was quite the opposite. Nan shouldn’t go around having crushes yet! She was his little girl yet and he wanted her to stay that way as long as possible. He threw a worried look at Anne who smiled at him with sparkling gray eyes. Sighing, he turned around and left for work. His Carrots always knew best.
