Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

(Sorry folks! No new posts today)

Recap: The Blythe family is in New York City on vacation

The Blythe’s finally got back to their hotel late that night. Their arms were filled with shopping bags and souvenirs. They ended up going to all the big stores and even FAO Schwartz. Anne carried a sleeping Diana into the room, while the everyone carried their bags.
“Ohhh…” Joy groaned. “I may never shop or walk again.”
“That’s what you call shop til you drop.” Rilla said cheerfully. “I can do that 24/7.”
“Only you can, Rilla.” Anne whispered. “Girls, if you want to go shopping again tomorrow, I’d get ready for bed.”
“Rilla, don’t wake me up, I’m all shopped out.” Joy said as she dozed off.

Joy ended up waking up around 11 the next morning. Everyone was gone. Joy found a note on her bedstand.
“Dear Joy,
Rilla and I went shopping and we will be back around 3. The boys have Di and are probably watching a movie or playing a video game. Dad went to another conference. Call if you need anything.
Love ya bunches,
Mom”

Joy smiled and was about to go check on the boys, but then her cell phone rang.
“Hey!” the voice on the other line said.
“Natalie?”
“And Alex too.” Alex chimed in.
“Hey guys!” Joy said excitedly.
“Gee Joy, you sound tired.” Alex said. “What time is it over there?”
“About noon, your time. Rilla went shopping with my mom again. We spent alllll day shopping and see sighting yesterday. I swear!” Joy said.
“Well, you’re not missing much here. Any cute guys there?” Natalie asked coyly. “Ow!”
Joy pretended not to hear the ‘ow.’ “Cute guys…well, no I’m not a fan of American boys—“
”Hello! American right here!” Alex retorted. “And what about Dominic?”
“Let me rephrase that…I’m not a fan of Yorker boys and Dominic doesn’t count, he’s my brother.”
“Yeah, well, I’m Canadian at heart. So there.”
“Yeah, but you still have that drawl, especially when you get excited or mad.” Joy said.
“I do NOT have an accent!”
“Uh, yeah you still do.”
“No way! Natalie do I have an accent?”
”Slightly?” Natalie was amused by the unknown flirting that was going on.
“I don’t have an accent!”
“You’re starting to now.” Joy said.
“Whatever, Joy—“
”Alex, what is so wrong with having an accent?” Natalie cut in. “It’s cute.”
“I don’t want to sound cute!”
“Ok, you don’t sound cute then, you sound like a guy.” Natalie said.
“An-E-Ways.” Joy emphasized. “How’s Faith and Jerry and Carl and Una?”
“Oh, they’re doing good.” Alex said.
“Wow, so specific.” Joy said sarcastically.
“I’m a guy, we don’t describe everything like girls do.” Alex retorted.
“Well I—“
“Joy, Rosemary is expecting!” Natalie interrupted.
“Seriously?! That’s wonderful!” Joy exclaimed. Jem walked in the room with Di.
“Hey Joy, we’re getting some lunch. What do you want?”
“Hold on—“ Joy said to Natalie and Alex. “It doesn’t matter…chicken and ranch sub with all of the veggies and stuff on it. Oh, by the way, Rosemary is expecting.”
“Cool.” Jem said. “And, Di is staying with you.”
“K.” Joy went back to talking on the phone.
“Hey Joy, I gotta go.” Natalie said. “See you in a couple days.”
”Bye Natalie!” Natalie hung up.
”So, Joy…”
”Joy! Joy! Joy!” Di said, holding her arms up indicating that she wanted to get on the bed.
“Hold on again Alex. Di wants to get on the bed.” Joy lifted Di on the bed.
“Joy, let me talk to her.”
“Ok…” Joy said. “Di, its Alex. You remember Alex right?” Di nodded her head. Joy handed her the phone. “Say hello…”
”’llo!”
”Hi Diana! Can you keep a secret?” Alex asked.
“Ya!”
“Ok…make sure Joy isn’t there.”
Di looked at Joy and said, “Go way.” To pacify Di, Joy went across the room.
”Is she gone?” Alex asked.
“Yah.” Di said bubbly. Alex told her something that made Di giggle.
“Don’t forget. It’s a secret! Can I talk to Joy now?”
Di slid off the bed and handed the phone to Joy. Joy and Alex continued talking. About ten minutes later Joy looked around the room. “Di?”
“Whats wrong?” Alex asked.
“Di…I can’t find her!” Joy started to freak out.
“Calm down…she has to be in the room.” Alex said.
Joy heard a giggle. “I heard a giggle somewhere…I think someone wants to play hide and seek. I gotta go Alex.”
”Ok, have fun Joy.” Alex hung up the phone. Joy played along with Di’s little game.

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

While Joy and Di were playing hide-n-go-seek, Anne and Rilla were shopping at the Palasades Mall.
“Oh drat.” Anne muttered.
“What?” Rilla asked.
“I just realized I forgot to bring my ****tail dress for this banquet thing tonight.” Anne sighed. “I have to go buy one now.”
”Yay! Let’s go!” Rilla exclaimed. Anne sighed. In truth she was tired of shopping, but being a mother, she had to make some sacrifices. Besides, this was good quality mother/daughter time.
They found themselves in one of the department stores. Anne could not find anything she liked.
“Ril, come on lets try another store.”
”Wait—mom, how about this one?” Rilla showed Anne a black dress. It was simple, yet elegant. “And its on ****! Come on Mom, try it on”
“It is rather nice,” Anne thought.
”Try it on!” Rilla urged.
“Ok….just to pacify you.” Anne said. She went into a dressing rrom, and a couple minutes later, she stepped out to show Rilla.
“Wow, Dad’s gonna flip when he sees you!” Rilla said. Anne looked at herself in the mirror. She had to admit, she still had a nice figure.
“Should I buy…”
”Yes!” Rilla exclaimed. Anne stared at the dress and then at Rilla.
”Well…” Anne looked at the price. It really was a good price and was on **** and so… “Ok.”
“Yes!” Rilla said. “This will be fun!”
“Oh boy…” Anne sighed. Rilla laughed. “Come’on Rilla, we better get going if we want to get everything done on time.”

Gilbert’s cellphone rang. He walked outside and answered it.
“Hello?
“Dr. Blythe? It’s Renee.” Renee was Gilbert’s secretary.
“Whats wrong?”
“Well…remember Mrs. Prichard? She went to another doctor who diagnosed her case differently than yours. And if the other doctor is right, she may not survive because of the different medication you put her on.”
“WHAT?”
“And her husband is ready to murder you.”
“Oh my gosh.”
“Dr. Blythe, the results haven’t come in yet. They will be positive on her case by the end of August.”
“Thanks for calling Renee.” Gilbert hung up the phone. He just put someone’s life on the line! “I can’t wait 3 weeks!” he thought.

4 hours later…
“May I present to you, Mrs. Anne Blythe.” Joy said, opening the door that connected to the boys room. Anne stepped into the room. Anne wore the black dress which swished as she walked towards Gil. She wore the diamond pendant he gave her for their 15th anniversary. Rilla did a fantastic job on her mothers hair. Anne looked as young as she did when they first got married. Gilbert took note of every detail and thought she looked marvelous.
“Shall we go?”
“I suppose we shall Mr. Blythe.” Anne said, a bit disappointed he didn’t say anything about her looks. Anne took his arm. “Be good.”
”Oh Mom, Cassie is coming down, since her parents are going too.”
“That’s fine. Ok. Bye Nic, Jem, Joy, Rilla, Di.” Anne kissed eachone.
”Bye!” The Blythe clan chorused. Gilbert and Anne left and took a cab to the dining hall.
“Oh, Gil, this is elegant. I can’t remember the last time we had time to ourselves at a nice restaurant like this!”
“Too long…and hey, the best thing about tonight is…we don’t have to pay a dime!” Gil and Anne found their table. “I guess Andrew isn’t here yet.”
“Oh, in that case, excuse me for a moment.” Anne got up and went to the restroom to freshen up. Gilbert sat back to relax. Anne came back a moment later.
“They still haven’t arrived?” Anne asked as she sat down.
”No—wait, they just walked in.” Gilbert said. Andrew and his wife walked to the table the Blythe’s were sitting at. As Gilbert got a closer look, he gasped.
“What?” Anne asked quietly. Gilbert couldn’t answer. Anne looked. “No way!!”
“Hello Gil, Anne. This is my wife—“ Andrew was cut off.
“Gil??”
“Christine? Oh gosh, it’s so good to see you!” Gilbert stood up and gave her a hug. Anne looked on a bit jealously.
“Whoa…you guys know each other?” Andrew asked in disbelief.
“Yeah! We were once—“ Gilbert started.
“Christine, how lovely to see you again!” Anne interrupted with a forced smile.
“Anne Shirley? You look wonderful!”
“Thank you, and so do you.”
“Sit.” Gilbert offered. The Dawson’s sat down.

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

“So how have you been Christine?” Gilbert asked cordially. Anne sat back. Gilbert, Christine and Andrew were engaged in a conversation and Anne wasn’t paying any attention. She realized Christine asked her a question.
”How do you do it?” Christine asked.
”Do what?” Anne asked.
“Stay as young as ever? I mean after having three kids—“
”Actually, we have five now.”
“Five?! And you look like that?! I envy you Anne. I’ve only had one and I’m still have pudginess.” Christine sighed.
“No! You look well yourself, Christine.” Anne said.
“Five kids, man…do you have a picture?” Christine asked. “Andrew tells me your oldest two are quite charming.”
“Oh, they are.” Anne smiled at Gilbert. He took out his wallet and showed Christine the pictures of their kids.

Meanwhile, back at the hotel…
“Let’s play a game.” Cassie suggested. “There isn’t anything good on TV.”
“Well, what do you suggest?” Joy asked.
“How about…MadGab?” Rilla said. “We bought that game today.”
“Ok…come’on guys, put away the video games and lets play!” Rilla said.
“Ok.” The boys agreed. They split up teams, twins on one team, Dominic, Cassie and Rilla on the other.
While the kids were having fun at the hotel, Anne was miserably sitting in the banquet hall.
”Oh, Gilbert! Do you remember this song?” Christine asked.
“Oh yes! It was our first dance at Redmond.” Gilbert said fondly. “Andrew, do you mind if I ask your wife to take a spin on the dance floor? Just for good times.”
“No! Go ahead.” Andrew said cordially. Anne sat there in amazement.
”He would rather ask his former girlfriend than his own wife to dance?!” Anne thought. She and Andrew made small talk. “Andrew, I’m sorry. I don’t feel well, I’ll just head back to the hotel. Please tell Gilbert for me.”
“Of course, Anne. I hope your not coming down with something.”
”Oh I’m probably getting sick of the smog, since I’m so used to fresh Canadian air.” Anne feigned a smile. “Bye.” Anne got up and left.

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

Christine was chattering but Gilbert didn’t hear a word. He was too absorbed in the Prichard case. Christine was such a heavy dancer. She didn’t flow like Anne, and she stepped on his feet quite a lot. What was Christine saying? Something about a flea being able to jump 2000 times its size? Gilbert just smiled and nodded. Surprisingly, Christine thought he was still listening. Anne would never let that pass. Speaking of Anne, where was she? Oh maybe in the bathroom. He would dance with her the next song.

Anne got back to the hotel and impatiently pushed the elevator button. She walked down the hall and she heard the kids laughing and yelling.
“Guys! Quiet!” Anne exclaimed walking in. It was immediately quiet. “Oh, look at this mess! Diana is still up?!” They all looked at her strangely. Anne never yelled unless she was really mad. Di’s lip started to quiver.
Anne’s tense face started to soften up. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have yelled. Just please try to keep it down. I have a headache and will be in the next room. Come here sweetie.” Anne said extending her hand to Di. Di smiled again and took her hand.
“Where’s Dad?” Rilla asked.
“He’ll be by later.” Anne said tensely. With that she and Di went into the other room. The kids just shrugged and continued playing their game.

The song finally ended, and Christine and Gilbert went back to their seats.
”Where’s Anne?” Gilbert asked.
“Oh she wasn’t feeling well, so she went back to the hotel.” Andrew said.

“I guess so.” Andrew replied.
“Excuse me.” Gilbert got up. He went into the lobby and called Anne.

Anne’s cellphone rang. “Hello?”
“Anne?” Gilbert asked.
“Yes?” Anne answered rather coolly.
“Are you okay?”
Anne bit her lip. “I’m fine.”
”Why’d you leave early?”
”I’m not feeling well, Gilbert.”
Something wasn’t right. Gilbert was married to Anne long enough to know that. “You’re not pregnant again are you?” Gilbert tried to lighten her up.
“Oh good gosh Gil, NO!” Anne exclaimed.
“Then what’s wrong?”
”I told you, I don’t feel well! Look, I’m getting Di ready for bed. We’ll talk later.”
”Ok Anne. Bye.”
“Bye.”

Anne sighed. What was wrong with her husband. Didn’t he still love her like he did almost 18 years ago? Gilbert was so distracted during the dinner. And Christine didn’t help that. Gilbert didn’t end his phone call with an “I love you”, or “sweetheart” or not even “Carrots”! Anne sighed and went to bed.

Gilbert stared at his phone and shook his head. He walked back to the table.
“Will Anne be all right?” Andrew asked.
”Yeah. I should probably go.” Gilbert shook the Dawson’s hands.
“Good bye, Blythe.” Andrew said,
“It was a pleasure seeing you again, Gil.” Christine said. Gilbert smiled and walked out. He got back to the hotel. Cassie already left. The four Blythe teens were watching a movie.
“Hey, your Mom ok?” Gilbert asked.
“Yeah, she’s in there.” Jem said. Gilbert walked in the other room, where he saw Anne peacefully sleeping.
”I won’t bother her tonight.” Gilbert kissed her forehead and went to put the covers on Di. He got ready for bed and fell asleep.
The next morning, the Blythe’s checked out of the hotel and headed back to Canada. Anne was still acting cold towards Gilbert. The whole trip Anne and Gilbert barely shared a conversation. Anne was frustrated, and Gilbert didn’t know why. He thought the best thing to do would to not say anything. Thankfully none of the kids noticed it, since they were excited about coming home. Two days later, The Blythe’s finally got back to Ingleside Drive. Anne was so thankful to be home. The boys unloaded the SUV. Anne carried a sleeping Di up the stairs. Gilbert unlocked the door and Anne up DI in her bedroom.
“Mom, I’m going over to the Fords!” Jem called.
“I’m going too!” Rilla said.
”I’m going to Natalies!” Joy called.
”Ok, be home by 7!”
”Mom, do you want me to do anything?” Dominic asked. Anne looked at her oldest son and smiled.
“No, dear, just Relax.” Dominic hugged Anne and went outside and laid down on the hammock,
Anne went to her room and freshened up. Gilbert still didn’t come up to check on her.
“Dominic!” Anne called through an open window. “Where’s your dad?”
“Went back to the office.”
”Thanks Nic.: Anne closed the window. ”The moment we get home, he goes to the office.” The hours went by as Anne did laundry and cleaning out the SUV. By the end of the day she was wiped. Anne barely saw Gilbert over the next few weeks. He was either working or at the office. Anne grew lonely and restless for his company. She told Leslie about this one day over lunch.

“…and he never says anything anymore. He’s so distracted. I’m tempted to think its about Christine, but for heaven’s sake, the woman is married. I want my husband back, Les!” Anne nearly cried.
“Oh Anne…I’m sorry. Maybe something at work has been bothering him.”
”But on the trip? He acted distant the whole last day we were in New York. And Les, our anniversary is tomorrow!”
”You two need to talk. A relationship needs communication.”
”Youre right. Thanks for listening, Leslie.”
”Anytime Anne. I’m always there for ya.”

Anne stayed up til midnight waiting for Gilbert. She gave up waiting and fell asleep. Two hours later, Gilbert came in. Anne, half asleep, said, “Gil?”
“Twins.” Gilbert answered and fell asleep right next to her. Anne woke up the next morning and found Gilbert still fast asleep. She went downstairs to prepare breakfast, but found it already made.
Anne found a card. “Happy Anniversary!” She smiled. ”Gil…” But when she opened the card, she realized it was from the kids, not from her husband, Did Gilbert forget about their anniversary?

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

“Hey Anne. I’m going off to work.” Gilbert said coming downstairs. That was all he said before he left. Anne sat there aghast.
”I can’t believe this! He completely forgot our anniversary! I understand if the kids did, but Gilbert?!” Anne thought. She finished breakfast and found Di playing with Dominic.
“Have you been playing with Di the whole morning?” Anne asked.
“Yeah, I didn’t think it’d be fair to bother you or Dad, since its your anniversary and all, so I figure I’d keep her company.”
“Oh, you are so sweet, Nic! Thank you for the breakfast. I’ll take it from here. Hello my sweet Diana.”
“Mommy! ‘Tory?” Diana held up her hands and Anne picked her up.
“Once upon a time, there was a little girl…” Anne told Diana a story she used to tell Rilla and Joy when they were little. A little later Anne made lunch for the family.
“Hi Mom! Happy Anniversary!” Rilla said. “Where’s dad?”
“At work.” Anne said shortly. The kids were smart enough to take a hint. Today was not exactly a happy day. Anne served them lunch. “I’m going to Leslie’s. Will one of you watch Di for me?” Anne left.

“What’s wrong with her?” Jem asked.
“I don’t know. Something’s up though…she wasn’t very happy.” Dominic said.
“Thank you Captain Obvious. Come’ on.” Joy said.
“Where are we going?” Rilla asked.
“To find Dad!” Joy declared.
“Wait—If he’s at the hospital, that probably means there’s an emergency.” Jem said sensibly. “So maybe Mom’s just upset that she can’t spend their anniversary together.”
“I guess you’re right.” Joy sighed.

Later that night, Gilbert still didn’t show up. Anne was very frustrated, though she didn’t say anything, her face showed her frustration. The kids wisely did not say anything.
“Good night Mom.” Each one gave her a hug and a kiss before going to bed.
“Good night. I love you all.” Anne sat in the living room reading a book. She almost fell asleep, but all of a sudden she heard Gilbert’s car drive in the driveway. A door shut and she heard footprints shuffle and skip up the stairs. The front door shut.
“Gilbert!” Anne exclaimed softly. “The kids are asleep! You oughta—“ Gilbert swung her into a kiss. “What in the world?! Are you out of your mind?”
“Anne, I was right! Mrs. Prichard’s going to live!” Gilbert said jubilantly.
”What? What are you talking about? Have you gone mad?” Anne was confused
”Remember my case about Mrs. Prichard?”
“No.” Anne said bluntly. “Gilbert Blythe, today is our anniversary, and the first thing you say is that some lady is going to live. The night of the banquet you didn’t say anything to me, we didn’t even dance. We’ve barley said two words and we haven’t had anytime to ourselves.” Anne exclaimed. She just popped and let out everything she was holding in. Gilbert looked shocked. Tears flowed and Anne sat down limply. “Gil…”
”Sh…Anne, I’m sorry. I really am.” He hugged her. “The truth is…in New York, I got a call saying that I didn’t diagnose right and that my patient went to another doctor. If the other doctor was right, she would not live. Her husband was ready to shoot me and sue me. And ever since the incident with Doc Stuart all those years ago, I couldn’t bear if I lost another patient. I can’t believe I didn’t tell you that.”
”So I suppose you told Christine that while you were dancing?” Anne asked vengefully. Gilbert laughed.
“Oh Anne. Christine Stuart is so boring! I was so absorbed in the case I didn’t pay attention to her. She was talking about how a flea can jump 2000 times its size. And something about her Doberman pinscher.”
“What? And I was jealous over that!” Anne stifled a laugh.
“Anne, you jealous? I never thought you had it in you.”
“Well, honestly, when you went to homecoming with Ruby Gillis, I was very jealous.”
“You’re kidding! I went to homecoming with Ruby?”
”Yeah, you went with her our senior year at Avonlea High. That still doesn’t explain why you forgot our anniversary.”
“I didn’t forget.”
”Oh really?”
”No! I was hoping you forgot, and when you didn’t say anything when I came down, I was relieved. Especially since I didn’t have anything for you. Well, I did order something from New York, and it didn’t come in until today. Here.” Gilbert handed her a small box.
“Oh, Gilbert.” Gilbert helped her fasten the diamond necklace and diamond tennis bracelet. “It’s beautiful.”
“There’s more.”
“Diamond earrings to match?! Gil! You—“
“Happy Anniversary Mrs. Blythe.” They shared a smile. Anne didn’t know what to say. “I love you so much, Anne.”
”I haven’t heard you say that in a long time.” Anne said a bit accusingly. Gilbert looked surprised.
“Love, My love, I didn’t think I had to say it for you to know. I—“
”I’m sorry Gilbert, it’s just that the past couple weeks…” Gilbert wiped the tears from her eyes. He shook his head.
“No, I’m sorry I didn’t pay attention to you like I should have. Let’s just put this behind us, eh.”
Anne chuckled. “All right.”
“I have an idea.” Gilbert went to the CD player and popped in a tape. “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” started to play.
“Shall we?” Gilbert extended his hand. Anne gratefully took it. They danced to the music.
“You know, I would prefer to dance with you over Christine any day. You don’t have two left feet.”
”I love you Gilbert. Happy Anniversary.” Gilbert drew her close and they shared a passionate kiss.
“Way to go, Dad!” Joy exclaimed.
“Awwww…” Rilla smiled. Gilbert and Anne turned around. Anne blushed and Gilbert smiled like a crazy school boy.
“You two should be in bed.” Anne said.
“We just wanted some cookies and milk.” Rilla said with a puppy face.
“Good night ladies.” Gilbert said. The girls giggled and scampered off to bed.

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

“Do you have everything?” Anne asked Dominic as he took one last look around his room. Dominic was getting ready to leave for college.
“Yeah.” Dominic said. “I guess this is it.” They went upstairs silently, where everyone was waiting. The boxes were loaded in the SUV ready to go to the Charlottetown airport. Nic had his goodbye party the night before and was dead tired. Today was the day he left the nest.
“Goodbye Nic.” Joy was the first to hug Nic. A few tears rolled down her face.
“Joyce, are you crying?” Dominic asked in mocked shock. He wiped the tears from her face, and held her tight. Those two were very close.
“Hey, if you see any girls my age—“ Jem joked.
“Don’t you dare or I’ll tell Faith!” Rilla said firmly. Jem sobered up.
“I was just kidding. Good luck man.” Jem and Dominic shook hands before they embraced.
“Hey you…Come here.” Dominic said and he hugged Rilla.
“I love you big brother.”
“Nic! Nic!” Dominic picked Diana up.
“Oh I’ll miss you kiddo. Be good for Mom and Dad.” He walked over to Anne and Gilbert.
“Come’on, we’ll be late.” Gilbert said. The three got in the SUV and drove to Charelottetown. The ride there was silent. Dominic had mixed feelings about going off. They unloaded Dominic things and Gilbert went to park the car. Everything was settled and Dominic was ready to go off.
“Ok, here are your tickets. Call us when you get to New York.” Anne said.
“Dr. Dawson will be at the airport to pick you up.” Gilbert said.
“If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call. Don’t forget to bundle up when its cold.”
“Anne, I think he has enough sense to know that.” Gilbert chuckled.
“Goodbye Dominic. I love you.” Anne hugged Dominic thru tears. “Be good.”
”Bye Nic.” Gilbert hugged him after Anne was done.
“Bye Mom, Dad. I love you so much.” Dominic said. He gave his parents one last hug before he disappeared into the Terminal.
“Eighteen years went by too fast, Gil.” Anne said as the walked out the airport.

“Flight 321 will be getting ready for landing at LaGuardia International Airport. Please put your chairs in the upright position, put the trays up, and turn off all electronics. Thank you for flying with us.”
Dominic sighed. He was finally in New York. The plane landed and Dominic got off the plane.
“Dominic!” Dominic saw the Dawson family waiting for him.
“Hey Cassie, Hello Dr. and Mrs. Dawson. Thank you so much for helping me out.”
“It’s no problem, Dominic.” Dr. Dawson said. “Let’s get your things.” Dominic and the Dawson’s collected Dominic’s boxes and luggage’s and headed off.
“Good thing we rented a Yukon. Gil said you’d have a lot of stuff. But then again, you don’t have as much as Cassie.”
“Dad…I need all that stuff!” Cassie countered.
“I bet if it were Rilla, she’d have two times our luggage combined.” Dominic said. They finally got to Columbia College. Cassie and Dominic went to the Administration Building to sign in.
“Where’s your dorm? I’m in Carmen.” Dominic said.
”I’m in John Jay.” They looked at the map. “Hey, we’re practically neighbors!” They went outside to meet Dr. and Mrs. Dawson who drove to their dorms. Dominic helped Cassie unload her stuff before he unloaded his things. They went to her dorm, then Dominic and an RA brought Dominic’s things to his dorm.
“Thanks.” Dominic said to the RA.
“No problem.” The RA left. Dominic took a look around then sat on the bed.
”I probably should call Mom and Dad.”

A whole semester passed by. Dominic couldn’t believe how fast the time had gone. He became great friends with Cassie and his South Carolinian roommate, Mike.
“Come’on Blythe. Put away the books!” Mike said.
“I have to study. I have—“
“Blythe, come on man. It’s December. It’s Saturday. The streets are covered with light snow. The tree is lighted. I know a lot of people would kill to be in NYC at this time. Live up a little.”
Dominic looked at Mike. “Well…”
”All right. I’ll call up Cassie, Lacey and Mark. We’ll go together.” Mike said. “I saw that.”
“What?” Dominic asked.
“The little grin you got when I said that I’d call Cassie.”
”What grin?” Dominic asked trying to hide the embarrassment.
“Oh don’t fool with me. Why don’t you ask her out?? You are in love, man.”
“How would you know?” Dominic asked.
“Oh lets see, all the flirting y’all do. Always talking to each other making, what my momma would call, eye babies.”
“Eye babies?” Dominic asked confusedly.
“Yeah, sittin’ down and just starring deeply into each others eyes…” Mike exaggerated by batting his eyelashes. Dominic laughed and threw a pillow at him.

“What do yall wanna do?” Mike asked.
“How about skating at Rockefeller center?” Lacey asked.
“Great idea! I’ve always wanted to go skating at Rockefeller Center! Come’on guys, it’ll be fun!” Cassie said.
“Uh…” Mike and Mark said unsurely.
“Or…we can go shop around and you guys can help us out…” Lacey said slyly.
”NO!” Dominic, Mike and Mark exclaimed.
”We’ll skate with you ladies.” Dominic said.
“Dude, I’ve never ice skated before.” Mike said.
“It’s easy! Do you know how to rollerblade?” Lacey asked. Mike nodded. “So, you should get the hang of ice skating.

Forty minutes later, Mike, Lacey, Mark, Cassie and Dominic were ice skating, having a bunch of fun. Mike skated up to Dominic and whispered, “Ask her out!”
“No!” Dominic whispered back.
”Do it!”
“Do you really think…”
”Oh trust me, she’ll say yes. I have 3 older sisters, and they always used to come home all starry eyed because a guy asked them out in the moonlight. I know you love her, man.”
“Ok…but if she says no, I’ll have a bounty for your head.” Dominic whispered. He saw Cassie skate to the side, so he skated to her.
“Hey Dominic!” Cassie said.
“Hey Cass,” Dominic noticed Cassie looked a littled flushed. “You ok?”
”Yeah…just a little tired.”
”We can call it quits for the night.” Dominic suggested.
“No, really, I don’t want to—“
”Its ok. Mark! We’re going back up.” Mark nodded. Dominic helped Cassie get her skates off. They went to return the rentals before going back to the overview of the skating park. It was a beautiful night. The moon shone brightly among the glittery stars. A cold breeze blew from the east. The sounds of busy shoppers and people talking filled the air.
“Just think, Nic, In two weeks, we’ll be going home.”
“I know! I can’t believe how fast this vacation has gone by!” Dominic said. “I’ll miss dorm life, but I really miss home.”
”Same here. Isn’t it funny how your dad and my mom dated when they were in college?”
“Yeah.” Dominic was inwardly a nervous wreck. He had no idea how to ask Cassie out. He heard Mike’s voice. ”Just ask her, man!”

“Are you ok, Dominic?” Cassie asked.
”I’m fine. Cassie?”
”Yes?”
“Will you…go out to a movie this weekend with me?”
“Like as a date?” Cassie asked.
“If you’d like. Or we can go as friends if you’re more comfortable with that.” Dominic said.
“If you were asking me out on a date, and I said yes, what would you say to that?” Cassie asked with a grin.
“I’d say, ‘you’ve just made my day!’.” Dominic said.
“Well, I’ll see you Friday night at 6.”
”I’ll pick you up at your dorm.” Dominic said. ”YES!!!!”

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

“You have a date?” Joy asked in surprise as she talked to Dominic on the phone.
“Yeah…Joy, I need help.”
“Nic, why are you asking me? Shouldn’t you be asking Mom, or Rilla, actually, Dad or even Jem? I have never been on a date, unless you call homecoming a date. Who’s your girlfriend?”
“Dominic has a girlfriend?!” Rilla exclaimed walking in. Dominic heard her squeal and he groaned.
“Why are you so happy?” Jem asked walking in with Faith.
“Nic has a girlfriend!” Rilla said. Dominic heard her say that and heard background voices.
“Joy, who’s there? Tell Rilla to be quiet would ya?” Dominic asked.
“Nic, its only Rilla, Jem, Faith and me. Oh and I--”
”Great, now the whole world is going to know I have a girlfriend.” Dominic groaned.
“What’s so bad about that?” Faith asked.
“What?! Joy, you put me on speaker!!”
”Nic! Calm down! Its your brother, sisters and friend. I was gonna tell you but you interrupted me.” Joy said.
“Who’s the girl?” Jem asked.
“Cassie Dawson.” Dominic said.
“Cassie Dawson?” Jem, Joy and Rilla asked in surprise.
“What about Cassie Dawson?” Gilbert asked as he walked in.
“Was that Dad?!” Dominic asked. “Ohhhh great.” He muttered. Dominic didn’t think this would be such a big deal.
“Is that Dominic?” Gilbert asked.
“Yeah. He’s on speaker.” Rilla piped.
“Hey, son! How’s college life? You ready to be home in a couple weeks?”
“Life’s great. I—“
“Dominic has a girlfriend!” Rilla couldn’t help but burst out.
“Rilla!” Dominic exclaimed aggravated.
“Really, now Nic? Who’s your girlfriend?”
”Cassie Dawson.”
“Cassie Dawson? As in Dr. Dawson’s daughter?” Gilbert asked, trying to sound cool and collect. Oh when Anne found out…
“Yeah. What’s wrong with you people?? Seriously. I ask Joy for help and all of a sudden everyone knows I have a girlfriend.” Dominic said.
“Well…not everyone…” Joy said.
“Mom doesn’t know. She’s at the Meredith’s, giving her all the old baby clothes that you and Jem had. They’re having a boy you know.” Jem said.
“Dad you can tell her I’m dating Cassie. Now, all I want to know is what do I need to wear for this first date?”
“Suit and tie?” Gilbert put in. “That’s what I wore, when you and your mom went on our first date.”
”Dad, we’re going to a movie. Not to a fancy restaurant.”
“What are you trying to do? Impress her by making you seem smart, fun, cool or what?” Rilla asked.
“All, I guess.”
”Hm. Wear nice jeans that aren’t scruffy, and I’d say a collared shirt. Wear a shade of blue or earth tones.” Rilla said intellectually.
“Why blue?” Dominic asked.
“Because one time, one of my friends said you look hott in blue because it brings out your killer eyes.” Rilla said. Dominic blushed. Thankfully no one was their to see it.

Re: It's a Blythe Family!...cont.

“Thanks Rilla.” Dominic said.
“No problem. Good luck with your date!!” Rilla said.
“Rilla, please don’t tell mom.” Dominic begged Rilla.
“I won’t.” Rilla promised. “Bye Nic.” Rilla left the room.
“Why don’t you want you mom to know that you have a date?” Gilbert asked.
“Yeah, Dominic. Mom’s not horrible when it comes to dating. Actually compared to other peoples parent’s, Mom and Dad are really cool.” Jem said.
“Dad, I changed my mind. I’ll tell Mom. And, its not that I don’t want her to know. I just want to tell her so she doesn’t feel bad that she heard it through the grape vine.” Dominic said.
“ Son, that’s really good of you. I won’t say anything.” Gilbert promised.
“And the rest of you?” Dominic persisted.
“I won’t say anything either.” Joy said. “Jem!”
”What! Oh. Yeah, me too.”
”Well, I gotta go. I have tests and stuff to study for. Tell mom I’ll call her later.”
”Allright. Bye Nic.” Joy said. Everyone said their goodbyes, then Gilbert left the room.
“You staying for dinner?” Jem asked Faith.
”Sure! Jem? Who’s Cassie Dawson?”
”Dominic’s new girlfriend. We met her in New York because her dad was at the same conference as my dad.”
”Well, why’d you guys sound so shocked when Nic said he was dating her?”
”Faith, it’s actually pretty funny…” Jem said.
“Dad dated Cassie’s mom his freshman and sophomore year in college.” Joy said.
“Apparently Dad and Christine were a big item and Mom got kind of jealous, according to Aunt Diana.” Jem said.
“Seriously?? How ironic. Now Nic and Cassie are going out.” Faith said.
“Hopefully, history doesn’t repeat itself.” Joy said.

“Dinner’s ready!” Anne called. Everyone came into the kitchen and got ready to start eating.
“Mom, Nic called today.” Rilla said as she smiled. Everyone looked at her. Joy raised her eyebrow. Anne didn’t notice.
“Really? Any big news?” Anne asked. Rilla just smiled.
Joy and Jem looked at each other. ”She’s gonna spill!”
“What’s going on?” Anne asked. She looked at Gilbert. He tried looking innocent. “Gilbert…”
”Nope. Call Dominic.”
”Aww…why can’t you tell me? Jem, Joy I know you know something. Faith…”
”Sorry Aunt Anne, I’m not a part of the family, so I can’t say.”
”Everyone knows something but me?” Anne asked. Everyone nodded guiltily.
“Well…Di doesn’t know anything.” Jem said.
“Why can’t you tell me?” Anne begged.
“Sweetheart, just call Dominic. He wanted to tell you, so you didn’t get upset by hearing it through the grape vine, as he put it.” Gilbert said. Anne excused her self and rushed to the phone. Everyone laughed.

“Hello?”
”Dominic? Hey how are you doing?”
”Doing just fine, Mom. How’s Di?”
“She misses you and asks for you all the time.” Anne and Dominic talked for a little bit until it came to a lull. “We were eating dinner and everyone seemed to know a secret.” Anne said casually.
“Yeah…well, I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t want you to find out—“
”Thru the grapevine. Yeah, I know.”
”Well, I have a date this weekend.”
”Really? Is that all?” Anne laughed. “What’s her name?”
”You remember Cassie Dawson? She’s my girlfriend.”
“Really? Wow! That’s great!” Anne truly thought it was, though it was a little strange that Dominic was dating Christines daughter.
“Really, your ok with it?”
”Yeah, of course, why wouldn’t it be?”
”I don’t know. Well, Mom, I gotta get ready for dinner. I’ll talk to you later.”
”I love you. Have fun this weekend.”
“I will. Bye.” Anne hung up the phone.
