December 2006 & January 2007 - Grimm's Fairy Tales

Let's discuss Grimms' Fairy Tales. We can all read the stories online. emoticon

Thanks to henk for posting this link on the forum and to Bets for finding the link and bringing it here.

**************************

1/ The Frog-King, or Iron Henry
I've read later versions of this story titled "The Frog Prince," where the princess kissed the frog allowing him to revive into his princely form. I never knew the original had her bashing him against a wall! With the alternate title, you have to wonder whether this story is about the princess, the Frog-King or good old Henry?

2 / Cat and Mouse in Partnership
More evidence that cats are horrid creatures that are the spawn of Satan.

3 / Our Lady's Child
Is it really the ice of pride that melted or just sheer desperation on part of the Queen to save herself?

Re: December 2006 & January 2007 - Grimm's Fairy Tales

My lazyness again. I brought up this link, read a few, and promised myself to read all of them. One day...
I will try to keep up with this one.
I was thinking about this last night.

I think somehere you have to keep in mind, all these stories are a bit condensed. If I remember well, many stories were written down in people's house or farms.
The brothers must have heard many variations of the same story. The vocal talents of the people telling theses stories added a lot I think.

I will be back in the evening, and react on story 2. About our Furry Friends emoticon

Edited: How nice it would be, if we would have talented story-tellers here, who could share there stories in a vocal way.
Audio-book-style.
YouTube or another way ?
I heard an Anne-audio story somewhere ,(Tickled Orange ?) that was told by a non-blessed teller. Just reading text.
Wonder how Megan Follow's audio-books would sound.

The message here seems clear. The mouse that has not lost faith in others, and the cat that know's his ways.
I think we all are the mouse sometimes, and sometimes the cat.It better be in balance.
Faithfull mouses can turn into very mean cats.

1. The Frog King

i like the bit about henry's heart breaking from the bands.

i didn't know that she threw the frog against the wall either, or that she "slept" with him before marriage. no kissing though. tut, tut, now we know why these stories were censored. emoticon

2. Cat and Mouse in Partnership

It's funny. There's a Chinese story about how cat and mice used to be friends, but the mouse is the culprit this time.

The story deals with how the Jade Emperor had once invited all the animals of the kingdom to report to him. The first twelve who arrived would become the twelve zodiac signs.

"While we are all aware of the hatred between a cat and a rat, these two animals were actually very good friends once. Good friends they may be, but these two animals are the worst swimmers in the animal kingdom. Although bad swimmers, they were both intelligent. They decided that the best and fastest way to cross the river is to hop on the back of the ox. The ox, being a naïve and good-natured animal, agreed to carry them across. However, when there is a carrot dangling in front, it is sometimes difficult to stick to friendship and the crafty rat decides that in order to win, it must do something and promptly pushed the cat into the river. Because of this, the cat had never forgiven the rat, and no doubt, hated the water too. After the ox had crossed the river, the rat jumped ahead and reached the shore first, and it cleverly claimed first place in the race!"

I don't know. I guess it doens't matter in the grand scheme of the story: confess and you're forgiven.

I wonder if the Queen's children were happy on earth after having played in heaven with the angels. and the poor third daughter, man she missed out!

Bets, your story was about cats and rats, not mice. emoticon

rats and mice are the same word in the chinese. i have no idea why the people who translate this stuff use "rat" over "mouse."

Re: December 2006 & January 2007 - Grimm's Fairy Tales

Strange, I guess no one could tell rats and mice apart when the word developed.

4 / The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was
What a strange kid. All it took was cold water and gudgeons.

5 /The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids
I read this story (same version) as a child. I loved how the goat saved all her swallowed children.

6 / Faithful John
I remember reading this one too. Such a compelling and gruesome story of devotion.

7 / The Good Bargain
weird!

8 /The Wonderful Musician
This musician just goes around the forest causing trouble, and doesn't even bother hanging out with the wood-cutter once he finds a human friend!

9 / The Twelve Brothers
This is one of my absolute favorites of the Grimm's tales. I read a different version where the sister sews clothes for her brothers from thistles and is mute for seven years.

10 / The Pack of Ragamuffins
Naughty ragamuffins!

11 / Little Brother and Little Sister
I like how the love of a sister for her brother always overcomes odds in Grimms tales.

12 / Rapunzel
A classic. I've always read this same version of the story. It always made me sad when the Prince was blinded, and how Rapunzel's tears clear his sight.

Re: December 2006 & January 2007 - Grimm's Fairy Tales

(Trying to keep up. I will edit this message everytime I have read one )

4 / The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was.
Funny kid indeed.

5 /The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids

I never read this version, I only know the Little Red Hood version. I hear a commercial on car-radio everyday, using this tale. It starts with the goat in the clock. That little goat is the real starring role somehow.

6 / Faithful John
Devotion indeed. And I think we all secretly sacrifice something sometimes, in order to stay in tune with our conscience, without knowing the result in the end.

7 / The Good Bargain

What happened with the daughter ?
How did the King know he was deceived ? By just assuming the Jew was lying ?

8 /The Wonderful Musician .
The wolf and the fox are usualy not popular or good elements in a tale. They are outwitted by the musician. Their badnnes was taken for granted, at least no further need for explanation

9 / The Twelve Brothers
I never read this one before.
Are the brothers the Zodiac-signs, the 12 months of the year ?
In some myths, the number 13 is an empty number, seat or place. Reserved for the "King" . Wodan/Odin ?
Frau Holle is a womanly figure with Odin-elements. Is the sister Frau Holle ?
This one needs looking into further.

10 / The Pack of Ragamuffins
I like this one. It makes me think of a Clint Eastwood-movie, when he collects a bunch of strangers while on the run. Don't remember the name.

11/ Brother and Sister

Sister is a very good girl ! Why is it often the sister that saves the live(s) of brother (s) ?

(To be cont.)
