Anne translations.

Maybe this information is on your websites somewhere. I was reading this in The LMM-Album.

Anne of Green Gables was translated into Dutch already in 1910,the second foreign language after Swedish.

I don't know why that was.
The north of The Netherlands,( The other side of "the Lake" ,Bets),has still a strong Presbytarian/Protestant character and there are more PEI-resemblances in landscape etc.
In some strong religious villages young girls are still dressed sometimes like PEI-1908. The northern parts were very poor at that time, and have seen many people emigrating to America. It is still mainly country-side, and economical not doing as well as "Holland" .
The Dutch books were published by Fontein, still a childrenbook-publisher.

The Anne-books have been translated in this order:
Swedish 1909
Dutch 1910
Norway 1918
Finnish 1920
French 1925
Icelandic 1933
Hebrew 1951
Japan 1952
Slovak 1959
Spanish 1962
Korean 1963
Portugese 1972
Turkish 1979
Italian 1980
German 1986

That's interesting to read! Thanx for posting. It seems like appart from the Dutch translation the earliest translations where in Scandinavian languages (I count Finland as a Scandinavian country even thou Finnish seratinly doesn't belong to the Scandinavian laguages). Well, no wonder, since Scandinavians could relate to the Anne books very well, both concidering the landscapes and the life style. I have read that even Finnish country girls of the postwar 50s related to the PEI life of the books...

i have just 2 Anne Books in Spanish, Anna de las tejas verdes y Anna la de la isla, let me tell you that the translate version suck suck suck big time.

My Spanish does not excist, so I can not try that out emoticon

I have e-mailed the Dutch publisher, if they are going to do something with the 2008 Anne- celebrations.
The person in charge is on holiday till januari.

Something else about the translations that I find interesting is that in some cases the titles are very changed.

Here comes some Finnish and Swedeish examples:

FIN: Annan nuoruusvuodet = Anne's Young Years(AOGG)
FIN: Anna ystävämme = Anne, Our Friend (AOA)
SWE: Vår vän Anne = Our friend Anne (AOA)
FIN: Annan unelmavuodet = Anne's Dream Years (AOTI)
SWE: Drömmarnas uppfyllelse = The Dreams' Coming True (AOTI)
FIN: Anna opettajana = Anne as Teacher (AOWP) (translated as late as 2003)
FIN: Anna omassa kodissaan = Anne in Her Own Home (AHOD)
SWE: Drömslottet = The Dream Castle (AHOD)
FIN: Annan perhe = Anne's Family (AOI)(translated as late as 2003)
SWE: Lilla Marilla = Little Marilla (ROI)

Some are changed because the original title doesn't translate, but others are just changed anyway. I think it's kinda weird. Didn't the translators like LMM's titles?

Are any of the titles drasticly changed in any other languages?

I was looking on amazon.com for some Anne books I haven't read yet, and the search included books in other languages. I came across a German book, and at first I thought it was some new Anne book that I hadn't heard of before(which was weird b/c I know them all.) I realized when reading the description it was one of the regular stories, but the German version. I can't remember exactly what the title was, but it was very different than the English title.

Here's a list of the German titles:
Book 1: Anne auf Green Gables (Anne of/or rather on Green Gables)
Book 2: Anne in Avonlea (Anne of/or again rather in Avonlea)
Book 3: Anne in Kingsport
Book 4: Anne in Windy Willows (Anne of/in Windy Willows - which is closer to the original title by LMM)
Book 5: Anne in Four Winds
Book 6: Anne in Ingleside
Book 7: Not (yet) translated!
Book 8: Anne & Rilla - Zum ersten Mal verliebt +
Anne & Rilla - Der Weg ins Glück Rilla of Ingleside (- In love for the first time + On the Way to happiness - or something like that...)

It's irritating, because the last book was split up into two books (Which have quite new titles).
The other titles have been changed, I guess, to keep up the "Anne of/in" rhythm.
While you can technically say "Anne auf der Insel" or "Anne von der Insel" it sounds pretty stupid. So they changed it to "Anne in Kingsport".
