The Blythes Are Quoted

EDIT: The file "The Blythes Are Quoted" which some of us have thought to be LMM's original maunscript for The Road to Yesterday is not this, but a butchered version of somebody's MA thesis about the subject. Therefore it ought not to be circulated further.

I finally took time to read the "The Blythes Are Quoted" manuscript.

The frame story about the Blythes really wasn't much of a story. Now I do understand why it was omitted from the published book. Quite a brave move of LMM to mix short stories and poems. But the public wouldn't have bought it... (unfortunately). For those who might not have read the manuscript: the frame story about the Blythes concists of a buch of poems (supposedly written by Anne and Walter) inserted between the stories and of each poem is followed by a shot conversation where the Blythes relate the poem to their lives. Very nostalgic. We don't learn anything new, because they just look back on things that happened in the earlier books. But the poems are beautiful.

Well, as for the short stories, which are the same as in "The Road to Yesterday". (Expect for that one extra story (which features in one of the other published short story volumes) is added. The Blythes are indeed quoted very efficiantly. Well, they are the family of the very respected doctor of the village, so maybe that's natural. But the Blythes come across as Über-Menschen and perfect authorities. We get an outsiders view on the family. Apparently half of the village loves them and the other half finds them annoying...

Anyway. Both "The Blythes Are Quoted" and "The Road to Yesterday" are perfect titles for the book.

The most valuable informantion the book gives is that Rilla has a son named Gilbert Ford and Jem a son named Walter Blythe...

But I really do like the stories. All of LMMs stories seem to be about lucky coinsidences. My favorite is the first story "An Afternoon with Mr Jenkins". The ending is left open, which is quite untypical for LMM...

Now I wish I had the old The Blythes Are Quoted -thread, to read what you rest said about it.

Re: The Blythes Are Quoted

I have The Road to Yesterday and the most interesting things about it for me are the tidbits we're given about the Blythe family in the stories, like, as mentioned above, the names of Anne's grandchildren, the fact that they fought in WWII, Susan's thoughts in the stories about the wedding, etc. Although, to semi-quote a phrase I read about it somewhere a long time ago, the Blythes as a standard of comparison did get annoying. I would love read The Blythes Are Quoted and will send you a PM.
