Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
You should never be surprised at Harry's lack of thought See book five, for example, when he forgot that Snape was a member of the Order...or one of the other many times when he was dim witted.
That being said, McGonagall, wonderful though she is, hasn't ever really been consistantly sympathetic/helpful to Harry. She's never really been the mentor to him that she is to Hermione. Harry's always naturally turned to the men (Lupin, Sirius, Dumbledore, the fake Moody to an extent, Hagrid).
But yes-she's in the order.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
A few things to keep in mind:
The difference between a hAllow and a hOllow. Hollow (as in Godric's Hollow), is a place. See dictionary.com: hol·low /ˈhɒloʊ/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[hol-oh] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation adjective, -er, -est, noun, verb, adverb
–adjective 1. having a space or cavity inside; not solid; empty: a hollow sphere.
2. having a depression or concavity: a hollow surface.
3. sunken, as the cheeks or eyes.
4. (of sound) not resonant; dull, muffled, or deep: a hollow voice.
5. without real or significant worth; meaningless: a hollow victory.
6. insincere or false: hollow compliments.
7. hungry; having an empty feeling: I feel absolutely hollow, so let's eat.
Whereas a hAllow refers to something quite different: hal·low (hāl'ō) Pronunciation Key
tr.v. hal·lowed, hal·low·ing, hal·lows
To make or set apart as holy.
To respect or honor greatly; revere.
So the title isn't refering to a place neccessarily, but something either sacred, or associated with an event (as in, all hallows eve).
Also keep in mind the plural on 'hallows'. That means there are at least two. Sad! And a little morbid...but then-what were we expecting?

Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
How did I know you'd be here Bee? And you said what I was going to saving me time!
Yep hallows (by the by I still think Godric's Hollow is going to play a v. important part in the ending)..plural. And 'deathly' nes at that. Sacred, ancient, ritualistic. Some ancient death rite? death curse? Connected to the horcruxes perhaps..and Tom's soul. I hope we're not walking down the sacrificial Harry route again...
God..I can' wait..and yet I don't want to read it yet either :###:
P.S Suri..do your Mom & Dad knew you're here? Because they might not like us very much. We're what you call 'heathens'....the aliens got us long ago.
P.P.S Hi Ilse

Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
Hehe Of *course* Carrots! I love being the first to tell things. Especially when it comes to Harry Potter type things
Gah. Stupid self sacrificing Harry. He won't die. That's such a lame ending to such a long series. Not to mention that Jo started that rumor herself so...bah. I will say though that I think that if anyone could write an ending that would convince me that it was *ABSOLUTELY* neccessary for Harry to die would be Jo. As it is, I can think of very few endings where it would work and seem satisfying-because Voldemort *obviously* has to die or the whole series has been a waste.
One thing that *does* make me nervous is Professor Trelawny's predictions. Granted, most of them are rubbish but a fair amount of them have, in some way or another, come true. Like in book 6 when she was reading the Tarot cards about a dark haired young man who disliked the questioner, or the prediction about someone leaving in book three...gah. Darn her. She's predicted Harry's death (and long life) several times as well. The only thing keeping me from *really* worrying about this is the fact that I don't think Jo wants to get across the validity of guess work/looking into the future. She's made it clear that she doesn't put much credibility in that so...*headdesk*. I think I know what Dumbledore felt like. When you think way too much into things (like I'm doing now), you start second guessing things.

Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
Half-Blood Prince question for UK (and all) HP forummer fans:
Re: "The Other Minister" Chapter 1 of HBP
Do you all think this is any sort of commentary on the current state of British politics, or politics in general? I have to say, for once in my life I didn't really read into it (surprising, I know, ###), but I was playing the audiobook and my mom asked about it and I wasn't sure, so I figured I'd ask y'all. Thoughts? I thought it was just a sort of generic politics joke commentary-- one that could be made any time regarding most politicians. What do y'all think?
I know I'm turning into an answer-mongerer, it's just that I am so new to them and this is really my only connection to any HP fandom, so I really appreciate any insights you folks have.
thanks,
~Zee

Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
Jo talked about this in the interview she gave right after the book came out (known as the Emerson/Melissa interview). Emerson and Melissa run the two most popular HP News sites (Mugglenet and The Leaky Cauldron respectively). This interview is a GOLD MINE of interesting tid bits. If I remember right, Jo said the connection wasn't intentional-the accepted timeline sets HP a good ten years before the current year (though I still hate that timeline. Harry Potter is timeless!).
I don't have time to go through the whole interview, but the whole thing is worth reading (there are some spoilers for HBP if you haven't read all of it, so be warned)
And being the die-hard Leaky fan that I am, I'm giving you their link instead of Mugglenet's link :P

Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
Isn't it, though? Every time I read it I lose myself in a fit of giggles. Particularly in the Harry/Ginny category.
