Re: The Ultimate Harry Potter Thread
yeah, me too, Carol... I think as a film it's a really good movie.. it's just the same kind of problems I have with LotR-- I know they *have* to cut it down for film, but I don't like every choice they made in cutting.

GOOD list:
I think the way they compressed teacher evals was clever, leaving quidditch out was good (just too much of a storyline there to it well), compressing the lessons, etc.. Filmically, I love how they made it visually dark, isolated Harry so thoroughly, etc. The design was really interesting.
NOT-SO-GOOD list:
Some characters you needed to see more of: McGonagall, and some of her getting the upperhand with Umbridge-- which points to a larger issue of some characters who are strong being weakened significantly in this. Of course, Umbridge has power over many things, but the closest thing to someone showing that she can't control him entirely is Snape's interview, and even that was a bit weak. The half-breed hate was underdone-- all of a sudden, she doesn't like them, it seemed-- needed to be built up earlier. And while I agree, SPEW is too much to put in, some more elf treatment stuff would've done a lot, particularly in reinforcing the problems of wizard elitism that Rowling addresses so much. Also, it was a pity they made Cho the sneak-- they could've just left the whole thing about someone telling out and had them overhear or something..
QUESTIONS:
- Why have the whole fight in the hall of prophecies practically?
- What's with the black smoke thing?
- Why didn't the film care much about Bellatrix?
- Harry's first kiss... wasn't that a bit hot'n'heavy for a couple of 14 year olds?
I MISSED:
- Scenes from the fight
- Harry really losing it with Dumbledore-- they abbreviated it too much, took away his quite righteous anger, and didn't give us as much information as we need for HBP to make sense.
- the Weasley Swamp! *sob*
- the statues coming down, and all of Dumbledore's other cool things in the fight with Voldemort (he seemed a bit outmatched, whereas when I read the book he seemed so calm and collected in a way..)
I LOVED:
- the Weasley antics
- Ginny being so good
- Neville rocks!
- how isolated Harry was
- Harry's words to Voldemort as he ends his possession of him at the Ministry.
- the newspaper headings-- v. clever

END SPOILERS
anyway.. it was cool.. the Imax experience was neat, although I think it would be just as good in 2D as 3D for the Dept. of Mysteries stuff.
Now, it's time to look forward to the book even more!! YAY!
