What do you call...? Please answer my survery! (very short)

I'm studying English at the university, and I'm doing assignment for my linguistics course, and need your help. Please answer the following questions: (Only 1 and 4 are really important.)

1. What do you call this? (If you are not a native English speaker "I don't know" is also a good answer. That would have been my answer bedfore I read Shopaholic and Baby.)

Image

2. Do you use one or more of the following words? If you use more than one word, do you use them indifferent contexts?

baby carriage, baby buggy, baby coach, baby cab, baby pram

3. Do you have any additional comments on how your own or other's usage of words for "baby carriage" vary? Like on usage in different contexts or in different regions? Feel free to write just anything you come to think of!

4. What country are you from? If you're from the US, which state?

Thanx bunches for your help! I know I can count on my Anne friends! In order to get as many replyes as possible I will post this on Anne3 too (if they get that back up in the near future) and on Avonlea Treasures. So don't reply twice... emoticon

My assignment is due on Friday Feb 8th, so this survey will be closed next Wednesday.

1. What do you call this?
Baby Stroller or sometimes simply, Stroller.

2. Do you use one or more of the following words? If you use more than one word, do you use them in different contexts?
No, I generally just say baby stroller... though if the stroller is intended for older kids (one or two years old), or an older kid is using it, I then just call it stroller. The one in the photo I'd call a baby stroller since it looks as though it's intended for infants.

3. Do you have any additional comments on how your own or other's usage of words for "baby carriage" vary?
I guess I answered that question in number two. emoticon

4. What country are you from? If you're from the US, which state?
Illinois, USA

Good question re word differences: case in point. The picture below is what i have always called a stroller or baby stroller. It is more in an uprightposition with back support I would say it can be used for babies who can sit up ( 6-9 months to toddlers 3 or 4 years old)Also this one also looks like it can be used in the reclined position. Some strollers, particulars the one of many years ago, were more in a upright sitting position.

The picture faith 86 showed i would have called a baby carriage or baby buggy. It is interesting because Avfan and i are both from the US, both from the mid-west Il is just 1 state SW of Michigan , but yet we called it 2 different things.

1. What do you call this?
Baby carriage (or carriage), Baby buggy (or buggy)

2. Do you use one or more of the following words? If you use more than one word, do you use them in different contexts?
I use the phrases interchangeably.

3. Do you have any additional comments on how your own or other's usage of words for "baby carriage" vary?
If the baby is in a supine position as in the example photo, I would use the phrases buggy or carriage.

4. What country are you from? If you're from the US, which state?
native Canadian

Intereting point, Muppets! I totally agree with you...

The reason why I didn't include stroller (and push chair which seems to be the British equalent) in the list is that I also thought that strollers are the smaller "baby holders" where the child sitts upright. In Finnish there are the words lastenvaunut and lastenrattaat and my dictionary gives the first as baby carriage/pram/buggy and the second as stroller/push chair. The five words mentioned in question 3 I took from an excersice in the book we use in our lingusistics class. Their list did not include stroller.

Really intereting. Seems like there is a broadening of meaning going on with stroller... Maybe...

Re: What do you call...? Please answer my survery! (very short)

I always considered a stroller to be something that holds a seated child, and usually the child is closer to the ground than in a buggy.

I've always always called it a baby carriage or stroller. I guess its just the fact that it carries a child and is being pushed that I call it a stroller.

A guy's perspective, I just call it a baby stroller or baby buggy. The correct name may be different because of the seating postions, but hey, most guys wouldn't know the difference. I'm in California.
