Marahashi Yogi dies

One of the icons of the 60's died:
Marahashi Yogi became a household-name, when the Beatles turned to TM.

(google-news)
VLODROP, Netherlands, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose meditation techniques to increase spirituality once attracted the Beatles, died Tuesday night at his home in the Netherlands.

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement the Indian guru founded.

Roth said it appeared he died of "natural causes, his age," though the official cause had yet to be determined, The Daily Telegraph reported. The Maharishi, whose given name was Mahesh Prasad Varma, was believed to be 91, though his exact age was not clear, the British newspaper reported.

In the 1960s, the Maharishi became the spiritual guide to the Beatles and Clint Eastwood, and his pupils went on to include the Beach Boys and film director David Lynch, The Times Online reported. He preached the use of a Hindu-based mind-control technique he called Transcendental Meditation that eventually became a multimillion-dollar enterprise with an estimated 5 million practitioners, though some followers, including the Beatles, with the exception of George Harrison, became disenchanted, the Telegraph said.

This is the recent centre of the TM-movement.
An old monastry in the south of the Netherlands.
Both the movement and the local politics want to demolish it. The TM wants to build an entire new place.
A local monument-group is fighting to keep the monument, but the costs of renewing and modernising are huge.

One more time about the Marahashi:
Few in this forum will realise how much the Marahashi influenced the so-called 60's.

This period is often called the Beatles-era.
Within this era was the Beatles-Transcendental Meditation period.
And while this period did not last that long, it's effect was great and still lingers on today for some folks.

( Adding to the article below:
Rumors say, that a few old pop-musicians dropped out of TM , because the Marahashi made to many advances direction Mia Farrow.
And Ringo missed fish and chips too much )

Beatles pay tribute to late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

LONDON (AFP) — Surviving ex-Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr paid tribute Thursday to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the band's one-time spiritual advisor, who died this week.

British pop legends The Beatles -- bassist McCartney, drummer Starr, rhythm guitarist John Lennon and lead guitarist George Harrison -- visited the Maharishi's ashram in India in 1968 and studied transcendental meditation.

The Maharishi died Tuesday at his home in the Netherlands. He was thought to be 91 years old.

"Whilst I am deeply saddened by his passing, my memories of him will only be joyful ones," said McCartney, 65.

"He was a great man who worked tirelessly for the people of the world and the cause of unity.

"I will never forget the dedication that he wrote inside a book he once gave me, which read 'radiate, bliss, consciousness', and that to me says it all. I will miss him but will always think of him with a smile."

The Beatles fell out with the Maharishi during their visit, with Starr reportedly objecting to the vegetarian diet.

"One of the wise men I met in my life was the Maharishi," Starr, 67, said in a statement. "I always was impressed by his joy and I truly believe he knows where he is going."

The Maharishi's other celebrity followers included actresses Mia Farrow and Shirley MacLaine.

His worldwide Transcendental Meditation movement became a major international business and his 1964 book "Science of Being and Art of Living" sold over a million copies in 15 languages.

added:

The Maharashi's body will be flown from Amsterdam to India tomorrow.

Re: Marahashi Yogi dies

the TM movement is still really big. David Lynch is really into it and they are trying to get it into schools to treat kids with ADD. I think the whole thing is a scam though. If you're truly finding peace, you shouldn't have to pay for your mantra.
