I agree with you. If there's work that your suppose to be doing, then IM shouldn't be allowed. But if you have free time or are finished all of your work, I think that its fine.

I guess they're not really necessary in the computer lab or the library computers... it probably uses up memory or system resources.
I find it a little distracting when I'm working on the computer and using IM with a friend at the same time.

Well I used to have business class (bad memories) and it was on the computer and if you could somehow manage to not get caught (not allowed technically) you could go on. It was really stupid though, you would normally be talking to other ppl in the class anyway. We're not allowed to do anything on my school computers, because they can see ur screen and shut anything that looks suspicous down. They have also blocked a lot of sites like facebook, which is really annoying. But it's fun to type in random addresses and see if they're blocked so really i don't see the point because if i want to slack off i can. Like my friends and i send like a million spam messages to each other rather then doing any work.
