Great decorating idea!
This wasn't my idea - during my lunch today I went to buy a mattress for my son's bunk bed and got into a conversation with the store owner, who also does interior design. We have a king size mattress set and need to buy a headboard and a new bedframe (the frame got broken during the move). And we don't want to spend a bunch of money. Anyway, he suggested going to a Sherman-Williams type place and getting wallpaper strips about 4 feet or so long each in two patterns that would match each other well. They usually have surplus at the store, so you can get strips like that cheap. Then you put them on the wall behind the bed, starting about 5 inches below where the top of the mattress hits, in vertical stripes (Wallpaper A/Wallpaper B/Wallpaper A/Wallpaper B). Then get a border that works with them (the kind that normally goes around the top of the room) and put it around the edges, doing the corners like a picture frame). Then up near the ceiling put those kind of curtain holders up that are basically pretty posts with holes in the center to thread fabric through. Get a fabric you like from the fabric store and arrange it through the curtain holders, letting it hang down the sides.
Anyway, as I said, not my idea, but I'm going to give it a try. The basic cost, according to him, would be around $20 for wallpaper and curtain holders, plus the cost of fabric (which, of course, varies greatly depending on what you get). That's a heck of lot better than even a cheap king headboard, and much more easy to personalize

Addy, I understand what you mean about the bedroom being the last priority.
My bedroom is a dump all for stuff we moved out of the other rooms.
It has not been painted nor decorated the entire eight years we have been here.
*sigh*
