Home School Honor Society

Dear Home School families,

The Omnicron Chapter of the Eta Sigma Alpha Home School High School Honor Society would like to invite qualified students and families to our quarterly meeting and a shared meal on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at 4:00pm at the Janzen Home. We live at: 12367 S.E. Ridgecrest Rd. Happy Valley, Oregon, 97086. Please bring a main dish and a side dish or dessert. Please bring a copy of the test results verifying your student’s eligibility for the Honor Society.

Please RSVP by so we can prepare.

There is a National High School Home School Honor Society called Eta Sigma Alpha. It is for 9-12 grade students. In Oregon, there are now two chapters, the Willamette Valley and the Bend Chapter. Mrs. Cindy Martin and I are the sponsors of the Omnicron Chapter (Willamette Valley) which includes qualifying students from Portland, Salem, Corvallis, and other locations. If you live closer to Bend, we would encourage you to apply to that chapter. See the national website for contact information www.etasigmaalpha.com. The requirements of membership for students include: a 3.5 GPA and above 90% on a Standardized test such as the CAT, IOWA, etc. or 1800 SAT, 180 PSAT. There will be quarterly meetings for members as required by the National Organization. Since many of our students are tested by BSAS, we have received permission to continue using the CAT, but only if a neutral tester administers the test, not a parent. We encourage you to visit the website with your questions. It explains the entire program.
As you know, Home Schooling is legal in all fifty states, but it is not accredited. Organizations like the National Home School Honor Society help to verify and affirm the accomplishment and hard work of your students. It adds weight to a Home School portfolio when applying for scholarships and employment.
Our policies and bylaws will be voted on at the first meeting. One of the policies will be the “once in, always in” rule. This means that once you meet the required test % you are always in the group as long as you choose to be.
