Alone Stands the Tree

This is but the beginning of a rather long poem -- possibly an epic work -- which I began in my time of study in my high school years at a private Christian school.

I had several ideas for what I wanted this poem to convey, but I became somewhat stuck after the first stanza.

The idea was to create a poem which tells an imaginary story about a young man and his conversation with a lone tree out in a field. The subject of their conversation: God and His creation versus the man-made theory of evolution. The tree pictured in my mind's eye was then, and still is today (at least in my memory), a huge tree that was in the midst of a mostly empty field of the Christian school's property where I and many other young people played softball.

Anyway, here is the very beginning of a poem I hope to finish some day. emoticon

Alone Stands the Tree

One day as I alone did walk upon a field I came
And noticed I a little tree that o'er the field did reign.
Alone was it with none to greet as though no voice it had.
Assumed it is that no tree does, but "Oh, who is this lad?"

So said the tree to me that day as I alone did walk
At once I started to reply that "Trees indeed can't talk."
But, talk it did and I could hear each word it said to me.
So stopped I did amidst the field to see how this could be.

(The second stanza has grown out of recent thoughts about this poem.)
