The Song of Gelderwald - Overview
The Song of Gelderwald
Note this is using Mark’s recollections some of the plot went right over Hastulf’s head so i’ve used my knowledge to patch up a few bits for clarity. There are characters in the party that know the relevant stuff if they have been paying attention.
Friday
Party hired by the Archduke of Algundy to go to the thieves market or ‘floating market’ and recover Scarlotti ‘the chessmaster’ who was going to be sold there at auction. Orders were to recover him or if not silence him.
I think the man that actually spoke to the PC’s was William of Redcliff.
So we go to the Moon and Stars tavern where there is supposedly a smuggler who will know where the market will be to find out where it is.
We sorted out cover stories for the arrival at the Moon and Star and split the party into three groups to avoid having one large group around asking questions. On the basis that this would probably result in the contact running away.
General investigations were going ok with a bit of local colour when one of the locals turned up dead with a letter written in blood clenched in his hand. Also arriving around this time was a creature with a terrible mask for a face. It had the strength to simply pick people up and throw them through the air yet our weapons passed right through it.
The creature bit several folks, draining them and it transpired later making them sensitive to its presence and i think some suspected trying to turn them into creatures like it.
The letter was from Eloise De Lays (Yes the Witch for who we have at least three Eloise De X’s actually) and basically said “You messed with me now i’m after you’. [Could whoever has it please post up the text. It would also be nice if one of the characters that knows stuff about this could explain it to the rest. Cannot do that bit myself unless you show the thing to Thorkeld, tall order right now i think that one.]
For those wondering what actually happened OOC:
• The contact was the carter being played by Finn;
• I got a reference to him as the person to speak to about acquiring things with an implied ‘tax free’ price;
• After careful encouragement and a bribe he required Hastulf to go into the woods to the site out there and return the pouch buried there to him. Jack acted as cover;
• Hastulf returned the pouch to him and then to prove himself has to take it to another man and bring back the payment;
• He then offered to tell me what i wanted to know;
• Which was the time and location of the Spinners ‘Floating Market’;
I didn’t keep anyone out, you were doing a sterling job of providing a safety net and a good distraction. That task needed minimal contact with others to avoid giving away what was going on and scarring the contact off. I am interested though as to how much of that you all spotted! Also how you found out about the grave site. I was working out how to get a word in the ears of the likes of Creed at the point we got timed out.
Back to it:
Hastulf quickly told Jack and then Jacob the details to make sure they did not get forgotten or lost.
Saturday:
We pick up a week later having had a journey with nights troubled by the insubstantial creatures on the road to the floating market. We stick to the road and pass guards. Then we meet folks, dead guards and live folks with black stripes across their eyes.
The odd beserker and lots of witches mooks later we meet a group of folks at a crossroads. Very well armed bunch of travelling scouts rather spread out....
Passing them we lost the trail. So one man says he can get us into the market, its pretty clear they are market guards and goes to speak with them. He comes back and vouches for us and gets us tokens for the market and the rules, no thievery, no killing, no lying.
At the market is a tavern run by Molly and a gun salesman, melee weapons salesman and a fortune teller, not much.
A few folks are playing card and all is fairly quiet.
After a bit it transpires that the fairly arrogant lady acting like a guard is actually Rose O’Bedlam, calling herself Ton. Yes Tom O’Bedlam. He’s here to bid for Scarlotti as well. [Again if the player of a character present last time wants to brief folks on what they know. Again i cannot because Hastulf hasn’t a clue while Mark knows too much]
Principal afternoon fun was needing to get a puffball fungus for some healing of a local. Glad i had a couple of bored Landsnect to take along as wave after wave of Witches folks tried to kill us (Those crew just came back for more, and more, and more, good going folks!)
Then someone fathomed out that we needed Blood Oak to kill the ethereal Fetches that had been bothering us for so long. So a scouting mission to find likely trees before identification by moonlight was oprganised. Only it turned cloudy.
Early evening was the auction, we bought Scarlotti. [Could someone present please give me a decent description of this. I missed it due to having got a thorn while organising/doing the firewood run OOC, annoying grrrr....]
Again a bit you might not get told IC:
They stepped over to the fay realm so they could identify the oak as there the moon always shines at night. They then negotiated for the leaves needed. Bill for that plant the acorns. The tree screamed when cut.
We prepared powdered blood oak, blood oak paste and a spear covered in it. Any of these caused the fetch to become substantial at which point they could be cut down and dissolved into smoke.
However we had an hour or two of two fetches causing mayhem and occasionally draining folks before we destroyed both and wave attacks by black stripped human servants of the witch. Plus the odd Ghoul and i believe some other lost (But being the parties healer and a scared peasant Hastulf was under a table for a lot of this. Especially after some pesking Fetch drained his right arm. Trying to heal Creed while we were both under a table with only one arm was ‘entertaining’ to put things mildly)
Several folks got put down at some point, two unconscious. One of the Landsneck levelled his rifle at the head of one of these and blew his brains out from about a foot range.
Eventually we got both Fetches and peace returned for the night with the rest of the market having hidden from the bad guys intent on killing someone(s) in the party and anyone standing with them.
Sunday:
Party choice to run for the west and the Church army a couple of days over the boarder. This resulted in a running battle through the waves of witches scouting parties on the road.
We arrived at the boarder to a warm greeting and invite in... only to once surrounded by guns and cannon be told that they are neutral in the civil war and we are their guests until it is over to be handed to the winning side.....
Big cliff hanger, plan is next event spring 2010 is the big jail break:
What we could do with from the ref team is:
• General treatment of the characters. Is this house arrest, we keep our stuff just don’t run off or you will get shot or is it chain gang time or where in between. Does it vary by character?;
• The various comments made about camps moving every month, teaching, visits to cheese factories etc written up;
• Some idea how well watched we are so we know when doing roleplaying what we have a chance of getting away with;
• The offers about letters, writing materials etc.
• Any more similar stuff...
Assumptions are dangerous and given past experience we have a two week or so window now of froth before some folks shut down till right on top of next event and the downtimes of characters in that camp could (TBD i’m guessing mind) be very important to the structure of next event.
Obviously no absolute guarantee at this stage that this will be the event until Steve confirms here it is a go but lots of folks seemed frothy about doing it.

Re: The Song of Gelderwald - Overview
A few clarifications on one or two things. On the Sunday we escaped South to Vermact... or however your spell it.
There was not stepping into the fay realm, it was more a case of just communicating a need and it being answered. Though given that only Jack and another was involved in that the confusion is understandable as neither wanted to talk about it much. The spear used against the fetch was made from a section of blood oak made into a crude spear, again there was alot to worry about at the time so a detail easily missed. The leaves from the blood oak did seem to cure the bites left by the fetch (Or is it fetchs, or fetchi? Never can tell) Not sure how well the paste or other blood oak preperations worked.

Re: The Song of Gelderwald - Overview
On the fetch they made little difference. The powder seemed to render them corporeal but it didn't make them in any way vulnerable.

Re: The Song of Gelderwald - Overview
For the record there were two killings bothSaturday evening. I don't have character names written down so to avoid spelling confusion i will use the names of those playing the victims.
Geoff who made a very convincing job of dying of poison and was most certainly last rights material. But see comments on the back and relaxing thread.
Damion. Who was laid out full stretch on the seat of the bench (Yes i know Damon himself was not there at the time because he was otherwise going to be playing an unconcious body for three hours) when someone walked up, pointed a rifle at his head and blew his brains out from about a foot range.
That would have been one very grisly sight when that corpse later got up and attacked the man that murdered it.
Hope that clears the facts up. I don't think there were any more but both of those occurred in pain view in the barn/tavern so should have been seen by quite a few folks.
