Preparing for War and the return of the Troublemakers
The large camp in the valley was a flurry of activity. Knights and colorfully dressed mercenary's hurried back and forth preparing for war.
Blacksmiths forged arrowheads and repaired and sharpened weapons. Farriers made sure that the hooves of the destriers were properly shod. Messengers ran back and forth carrying the orders of their masters. Priests and preachers shouted out their sermons to the gathered troops. The banners of number of holy orders whipped and cracked in the wind.
However through it all completely oblivious strode Brother Ulrich. He stormed toward a pavilion in the center of the camp. Large and unadorned with black gonfalon bearing a white dragon, stood out side the entrance.
Pushing past the guard Ulrich strode into tent. Inside a number of men were sitting around a large table covered with maps of Algundy and Osturune. Ulrich walked up to the table and hurled what he was holding onto it in front of the startled church knights. It was cloak. A black cloak, burnt and shredded, covered in dry blood. A white cross could still be seen on the shoulder.
"I hope his death was worth it!" he said angrily, addressing the entire room.
"We are in a meeting, Brother Ulrich" said one of the men, dressed in black rags the same symbol on his chest that was on the cloak."We have a crusade to organize, go and polish your sword or something" he continued.
"I will not, my lord beggar knight. Two friends and comrades lies dead for little reason and I demand to know why! What did that mission accomplish, what did we learn that we already did not know? The Earl of Osterune is a traitor to his lord, the Archduke. The Church of Algundy is weak and corrupt. Why did we accept a virtual suicide mission from Archbishop Simon when he is not even our lord or patron and can not be trusted?"
"Because, Brother Ulrich" said another man leaning forward, this one in the same colors as Ulrich. "We had no definite proof that the Earl of Osterune was a heretic, therefor no excuse to enter Algundy to begin our inquisition. Now, thanks to Sister Kyriaki's report our inquisition has become a crusade. As for Simon of Wisbruck, he is the one who called for this crusade, and because of it several more military orders have joined the ranks of the Dragons of the Lady."
"My Lord Jacob, he tried to have Lord Magnar killed!"
"It is obvious the Archbishop see's Magnar as a political rival, but that does not mean he is a heretic." replied Lord Jacob.
"I am sorry for what we put you and your comrades through but it was necessary, for the greater good." he continued. "A request for help in another mission from our new ally, the Archduke Harald of Algundy, has come through, an important one that must be completed before we launch our invasion of Osterune."
"You however will not be taking part", cut in the begger lord. "I think your skills will be better suited for the frontlines."
"Who then will you send.?"
"If the Sisters of Blood can spare her, Sister Kyriaki will again be representing the Dragons of the Lady. whether she can or not, we will also be sending two rather expendable mercenary's from Colonel Grenville's company".
"You don't mean...?" started Brother Ulrich.
"I do" replied the beggar lord, giving a gap toothed grin.
Lord Jacob sighed. "The Landsknecht's are returning to Algundy..."
