The Captains story
“The Tavern was small and quiet, but then that was not unusual at this time of night. The air outside was foggy and cold so the welcoming fire of the tavern shone like a beacon its warmth often sending its patrons into a slumber at which point the barman would generally slit their throats and steal their purses. As he looked across the seemingly empty bar he saw his last few customers, one of which called for another ale then lean backwards tipping his chair onto two legs. The barman wondered whether this would be a lucky night for him as he watched the man’s eyes droop slightly, the man was nothing particularly impressive; tall, thin, longish brown hair and a white and brown tunic. That is where the standard stuff ended. On his chest there was a leather chest plate, whilst on his arms and legs there were vambraces and greaves. There was the hilt of a sword poked out of a scabbard at his waist and most impressive of all an Arquebuse was slung over his shoulder by a strap of leather. The barman pondered for a moment before attempting to strike up a conversation.
‘‘So what’s a rich bugger like you doin’ in a ****e hole like this ‘ey?’’ grumbled the barman.
“Me, I'm not rich I don’t have a penny to my name my good man.” Responded the stranger cheerfully. “But as to what I’m doing here I’m on a mission for the Archdukes Riverwardens. My name is Captain David Lucas”
‘‘Ere wha’s tha’ ya say’’ said the barman hobbling toward him, “You got no bloody money how you gonna pay for all them ales you drunk”.
“Well I...” began Captain Lucas before being silenced by an arrow burying it self in the table before him.
“Drop your weapons or you die” The Captain looked up to see the two men from the other side of the bar standing one of whom had an arrow trained on his chest.
“Damn it!” cursed the Captain standing up “I can’t drink on duty why the bloody hell do you have to pursue me in the…” He was cut off as the arrow trained on his chest was fired and struck him.
The captain faltered momentarily before starting to mouth instead of talk. Finally he fell to his knees before keeling over backwards as a second arrow struck him in the stomach sending him crashing into the wall. The barman gaped momentarily before fleeing the room and slamming the door behind him.
“Ha, he wasn’t so tough” said the first attacker “I can’t believe this little whelp gave Don Salvatorri’s family trouble” the man advanced confidently toward the body of the Captain.
“Steady mate he might not be dead” said the second man cautiously “I’ve heard that ones a hardy bastard” he followed more cautiously, his bow still nocked and half drawn. “Check him for weapons I would”
The first assailant reached toward the body first removing the Arquebuse, then the sword.
“He don’t feel like he’s carrying anything else you know” said the first one “This has got to be the easiest bounty we ever… ARGH”
The man screamed as he looked down at his chest where a small dagger had pierced his back and gone straight through the ribcage to emerge out the other side with the Captain’s arm still holding the dagger and pushing it further through.
“ HOLY HELL” roared the second assailant leaping back away from his friend who now lay bleeding to death as the captain rose behind him snapping the arrows in his body as he rose.
“I am a hardy BASTARD!” he roared diving toward the assailant with his tankard held in front of him, bringing it round in an arc he smashed his opponent squarely in the jaw feeling bone and muscle breaking beneath him. The assailant fell back with the force of the blow giving the captain time to load his arquebuse and fire. He looked down upon the corpse with distaste.
“Bloody mercenaries they’ve got no damn sense of timing.” He then hobbled toward the door of the tavern before collapsing in the doorframe."

Re: The Captains story
No way!.
Did the taverner try to kill you?...No
Did the taverner set the hitmen on you?...No
So why does the poor taverner, who's establishment has been damaged and stained, have to be out of pocket, just because thugs followed you to his tavern?
Surely your honour, your sense of natural justice requires there's something more than just leaving him corpses to tidy up and explain to a nosy magistrate, and bloodstains to mop up?

Re: The Captains story
Yeah, and if you're a Lawman like a Ranger, you're expected to pay your tabs...especially if you happen to be a Captain.
Trust me, trying to get away from paying your tab does not work...

Re: The Captains story
Fair.
A fair point. Now write that bit and I'll believe it, but without the stampede of defense to the poor taverners side I think you'd have left him with the bill.
Mind you I can say that about most characters

Re: The Captains story
Audhild would always pay her bill, but might try and pay in kind by telling some tales.
Hawisa always paid in advance.
