A whole lot of letters.

The captain grimaced as he thought of the amount he would now have to write but began with the letter to Creed

"To Creed, Journeyman of the Worshipful Guild of Lawyers, Secretaries and Judicial Champions.

I write to you now first to apologise for my misconduct in calling you a liar with regard to the banner of the evil one, but I hope you understand how I felt with regard to it as it was nay IS the only proof of what we achieved over those dark few days. Secondly is a request for information. For I do not truly understand the dangers of the witch which you appear to have a better understanding of than I. If you would prefer not to pass this information and attempt a face to face meeting then I find this perfectly understandable or should you even wish not to share any important information then that also is fine. Should you wish to contact me I shall be at the Headquaters of the Riverwardens where I am currently instructed to wait for further orders. I leave it to you Creed and may the blessings of the lady be upon you.

Captain David Lucas."

Satisfied with his first letter the Captain made a start on his second letter.

"To Whomever it may concern. The Mercenaries guild Redcliff.

Two of your men were recently sent on a mission to Osterune by a Lord Magnar. I feel it is necesry to infom you that both of them are murderous rogues who would sell their own grandmothers before helping their fellow man. As a representative of the Archdukes law I demand that the one named Maximillian be tried for murder and executed. I demand this in the name of the grey lady.

Captain David Lucas Wolfsbane, Dragonslayer, The Archduke's most loyal and honourable Riverwardens."

"To Admiral Hamund. Commander The Archduke's most loyal and honourable Riverwardens.

Greetings and may the blessings of the lady be upon you sir. I write to you now from the Headquaters of the Riverwardens and hope that I find you well, in the mission I have just returned from I saw many strange things and performed some even stranger tasks. I feel that as the frontline defence against an attack from the east that as a group we need to be prepared and briefed as to what we must expect to encounter. I would gladly
volunter to brief all current members of the Wardens and feel that it would be a valuable experience for all.

Thank you and may the blessings of the Lady be upon you.

Captain David Lucas."

Finished the captain smiled and stretched as he finished his letters.

Captain David Lucas

Sir, thank you for informing me of the activity's of these two miscreants, however it is with regret that i must inform you that they are not members of our guild, and I can only assume they are members of a free company from outside Algundy.
I contacted the Lord whom you said hired them. He denied all knowledge of their existence and made it quite clear that if i continued with my questioning i would face the displeasure of the church.

Whilst the guild takes reports of unregistered mercenary's seriously, it appears that these two individuals have powerful employers, so i would suggest caution if you wish to take this matter further.

If you do wish to continue pursuing this matter, I suggest contacting a Captain Ranulph Thatcher, who has taken a personal interest in this case, and can be contacted in the town of Littlerot.

Yours In Good Health

Bartholomew Fletcher
Secutary for the Worshipful Guild Of Mercenary's

Where do you get off calling yourself "Wolfsbane" and "Wyrmslayer"? There weren't even any wolves!

What do you suppose the Mercenaries and the Landsknechts will do when you've accused an innocent man of murder?

How would they get wind of what I said? The Landsknechts are not connected to the guild of mercenaries in Algundy and I do not intend to take this any further. (Though sorry Jasper that was a typo I am not convinced you were involved in that particular situation).

Do bear in mind that though the Mercenaries Guild is a League-wide organisation of paper-shufflers and financiers supporting the actual free companies. Operating in a foreign country requires that you make yourslef known to the local offices and pay their fees (translation: spend points on the appropriate Guild package).

Those two Landshnekt are currently being hunted for about a half-dozen different offences each (there's a slight variation in which ones are wanted for which crimes) under testimony offered by Guilders and Noblemen alike.

What Mr Boatmen there has to worry about is a hell of a lot less than they should be losing sleep over.

However! There are also princes, lords and rouge generals who will raise their own regiments, who will want nothing to do with any official body. e.g Our regiment and Prince.

Most of whom wake up one morning with a second smile, face down in a ditch.

Think of it like this - some Guilds are strong, international in scope and well-supported by both church and state. The Alchemists for example - it's in the interests of the Powers That Be that there be gunpowder and suchlike, but that it be limited in access. Secretaries and Lawyers as well, are a specialised skillset that must be well regulated - and both Church and State make use of them.

If that's true for alchemists and secretaries, think how much more true it would be for professional armed forces trying to hire themselves out without the assurance and support of a guild?

Sure, some noblefolk would manage it under the extremely thin guise of 'alliances' for which cash is exchanged, but that's as a major noble force. As individuals, it's straight back to the ditch as the organised, deadly people whose livelihoods you're trying to undercut arrange for you to have 'off-the-book' accidents.

Now, if your group has formed regular 'trade ties' with the guild, then you could take the Guild package (which includes appropriate permissions) and say what you like. If you've shelled out a lot (a hell of a lot) of points for a suitable ally or contact, then that works too.

But if you're on your own..?

Don't get too close to any ditches. ^_^
