Between then and now

There was nothing about the quiet ruined inn in the middle of Jaegerwald that made one think that a year ago the great rebellion of Jaegerwald had begun there. Looking around now however and it became obvious that something had happened recently, corpses lay scattered across the clearing with wounds ranging from arrows right up to decapitations. The carcases were old and as the day began would stink at the side of the house were four freshly dug graves each with a weapon embedded into the grave, looking to the edge of the clearing in one of the the sturdiest trees there was a grey shape hunched in the crook of two branches.

It hissed and growled as it sniffed the air appearing to taste the blood in the air, it hesitated appearing unsure of itself and almost hovered in the tree branch waiting... suddenly there was a second hissing noise then a third and a fourth from the surrounding area, this seemed to be what the creature was waiting for as it turned and scuttled down the tree trunk almost spider like in its movements rising to a kind of stooping gait it scurried forward stopping every few seconds to scent the air joined rapidly by three others of a similar shape as they advanced seemingly with less caution now they were in a larger group they began to cross the clearing approaching the shell of the inn. As the reached a distance of about 10 feet from the door they froze as an arrow embedded it self in the soft turf at their feet, they inclined their heads ever so slightly as if calculating the distance between them and the door before without warning launching themselves toward it at top speed.

There was a sudden bang as the door burst outward catching the first creature full in the face. Followed by a BOOM and a flash from within the door as an arquebuse was fired sending the second creature crashing to the ground with a shriek where it writhed in pain. Immediately after this was a cry of “LOOSE!” as half a dozen arrows rained down from the second floor windows, the things with their heightened reactions dodged many of them but two found their mark in the first wraith as it staggered around recovering from its initial encounter with the door, as the arrows finished landing half a dozen warriors charged out of the door roaring at the top of their lungs, the remaining two creatures already disturbed by the shot and arrows needed no further prompting and sprinted away at top speed, the one shot remained on the floor still writhing whilst the first staggered up and attempted to flee with its brethren, as it began to pick up speed there was a cry of “WARE!” and the warriors threw themselves down as a second shot was fired catching the injured creature high in the back and it crashed heavily to the floor seemed to attempt to rise before collapsing and moving no more.

The two healthy ones had already reached the safety of the tree line and were lost to sight as the warriors continued to pursue eager to whet their blades. “All units halt!” came a shout from a tall man in leather armour with a still smoking arquebuse held in front of him “We are still unsure of how many of those ghouls are out there not to mention the other abominations crawling around that forest!” the swordsman reluctantly stopped their advance and began backing away from the tree line eyes wary for any sign of danger. Whilst the warriors backed up to the cottage, the tall man turned and shouted up to the second floor “Lieutenant, all well?”. “Aye sir, Captain Lucas sir no problems” the Captain nodded and walked toward the still convulsing Ghoul on the ground it hissed as he approached clawing with its hands attempting to paralyse him with but a touch, the Captain drew back his foot and kicked the ghoul in the head repeatedly until it stopped clawing as it drew a rasping breath, the Captain looked down with contempt at the monstrosity at his feet he reached down and drew his sword before bringing it down upon the creatures neck severing the head.

He spat upon the body before he turned to his companions and stated “Men gather your supplies, we are moving within the hour”. “Captain, what should we do witt'e bodies sir?” he stated gesturing to the multitude of Lost strewn along the ground. “You, Archer and Smith pile the carcasses and burn them, the rest of you with a will get to it now” The Captain responded, he paused for a second as the archers appeared coming through the door “Which one of you dozy bastards almost gave us away?!” .
