Heading out to the Highway

Westfall, The Monastery of the Order of Balisarius.

Marcus Asquith looked up at the vast granite slabs that made up the outer wall of the Monastery. Every time he was sent out to the far reaches of the league, he always wondered if he would ever see them again. He looked towards the huge reinforced gates. They stood open, and streams of people were coming in and leaving the place. There was a legend that said that gates were made by Saint Balisarius himself, and were so ancient, the Oak they were made from had become as hard as the granite they were set into. He watched as a group of Friars made their way to the gate. The plate armour they wore on their arms and legs glinted in the watery sun. Marcus looked at his own armour. Patches of his greaves had become rusty and dented from years of use. He had recently acquired a pair of plate vambraces as well. They were old and heavy, but reassuringly so.

His thoughts were interrupted as he saw the head blacksmith walking towards him with a long bundle of cloth clutched it one hand.
"I just finished it today." He said once he was in earshot
"That was faster than I was expecting." Marcus replied
"O ye of little faith." the blacksmith said, unwrapping the bundle.
Inside was a morningstar. It's black haft gleamed in the sun.
"The head is made from high quality iron, with a lead core for extra weight."
"How did you manage that?" Marcus asked
"Trade secret. Anyway, seeing as you go through wooden hafts faster than a fensman with a bottle of Fardreamer, this one is made out of cast iron. It makes it a couple of pounds heavier, but it gives it some extra heft. This thing is pretty much indestructible."
"Thanks a lot for this. I look forwards to getting to test it out."

A few hours later Marcus was on the road. The number of people had lessened to the occasional cart trundling past. He looked up at the signpost and sighed. He didn't think he'd be headed back to Osterune so soon. He shrugged his pack higher on his shoulder and continued down the road.
"Once more unto the breach..." he muttered.
