Although popular, the series was panned by critics who cited uneven character development. Goody's crush on Habib for example was confusing considering Goody's camp, effeminate mannerisms.[citation needed] Many believed that a character such as Fowler, with high regard for tradition and responsibility would have married Sgt Dawkins rather than co-habit with her. Similarly, despite Habib's avowed socially conscious feminism, she became an unintentional sex symbol.[citation needed] The character of Gladstone was also criticised as merely a token Afro-Caribbean character.[citation needed] Nonetheless, it came 34th in Britain's Best Sitcom in 2004.
