Re: Begins Closet Progress
Are the "drawers" mounted permanently yet? They all look a little misaligned and I would hate for you to spend that money and end up with something crooked. Not trying to be offensive, just observant and want to make sure.

Re: Begins Closet Progress
Ha! no offense taken mate. No, they are just placed in there right now. I'll measure out the distances and align them tomorrow.

Re: Begins Closet Progress
I will be watching this with great interest. Good work!
Are you going to make copies of the drawer pulls or use all real pulls?

Re: Begins Closet Progress
Cool deal Rudi. This is a project I think would be really fun to do. I think I'd rather have an '89 vault though (since it's so better and all) :lol :p
Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Re: Begins Closet Progress
All the pulls are there. Had to buy 38 of them. Sticker shock. More progress pics coming soon.

Re: Begins Closet Progress
Since it's not gonna' be functional, I would recommend having someone (if not do it yourself), make a mold of one of the marine pulls and pour a bunch of resin ones, to use instead. You can paint them to look exactly like brass and then return all the ones you already got and save yourself a fu*king fortune!
Other than the suit that goes in these closets, the most expensive thing about it, are the pulls.
You also need to make sure the sidewalls and rear wall of the cabinet, are a similar material to the drawer faces. CDX plywood (which is what you have) will NEVER stain the same as solid pine. You should "skin" the inside walls with 1/4" knotty pine plywood, by using the money you saved by making your own pulls.
And if you have the determination, you should mortise the face of the pulls into the wood, so that they're flush with the drawer face, rather than sitting on it. The screen used closet has mortised pulls. The easiest way to do this, is with a mortising bit mounted into a laminate trimmer or router and then clean up the corners with a chisel. It'll give a much cleaner look and it'll be more accurate...
Plus, if you did get a laminate trimmer, you could also put a 1/4" roundover bit into it, to ease the edges of all the drawer faces. It'll be a lot faster and easier than sanding them by hand. Plus it'll look more professional. You can get a cheap one from Sears with the Craftsman name. They're about $30 there and WELL worth it if you're not gonna' be using it very much. It's a good homeowner's version, over the far more professional and expensive ones, such as Bosch or Porter Cable.

Re: Begins Closet Progress (New Pics
I've gotten all the boards in place and the bottom is on. Tomorrow I'll put in the interior frame and measure for the doors. More pics soon. The drawer face boards are about as straight as they can be as I used a spacer template to keep them as even as possible. They are off a bit because of natural oddities in the wood etc...
