CFGBA - Titan Issue

At the board meeting of the CFGBA last night, we gave written notice to Jack McCaig that we intended to hold a vote for removing him from the board of directors for several reasons, which we don't feel need explanation at this time. Mr. McCaig is understandably upset about this situation and has decided to share internal CFGBA board business with others outside of our organization. His statement also misrepresents the actual events.

We recently received an application from a cement company requesting to join our organization as a business member (the lowest tier of business membership - $125). When we received the check, it was from the Titan Corporation.

Due to the controversy surrounding the Titan Corporation, we decided to delay depositing this check until such time as we are able to craft a clear and accurate statement about our position on the proposed cement plant.

The board of directors for the CFGBA decided earlier this year that the only criteria for CFGBA membership and sponsorship is an interest in promoting green building. Membership in and sponsorship of CFGBA in no way represents an endorsement or recommendation of a member's or sponsor's services, products or business practices by the CFGBA. Nor does such membership or sponsorship influence any decisions and/or actions of the CFGBA.

Todd King - incoming chair, CFGBA

Re: CFGBA - Titan Issue

The email sent by Jack McCaig was originally sent yesterday, 12/17, at 11:15 am. At 2:30 pm we responded as posted below. Apparently Mr. McCaig then sent his email to a new list of people sometime last night, this time removing the CFGBA board of directors from the list so we wouldn't know he sent it, and did not include our response.

It may be worth noting that it is standard operating procedure for non-profit organizations not to require any specific criteria, green or otherwise, for those desiring to be members, as can been noted by the fact that Titan corporation has been a member of the USGBC since September 2007.

Re: CFGBA - Titan Issue

I salute Jack McCaig for resigning (let me note I’m unsure if I know Mr. McCaig or not maybe by sight but not by name).

The Titan issue has bothered a number of us (Members) for some time. I have had numerous conversations with members who were as shocked as I was at the INACTION of the board. I joined the CFGBA not only to expand my building knowledge, but also to be part of a group that took action, and helped to shape public policy in the cape fear region.

This is a problem for the board only because of INACTION from the board. This Titan thing has been going on long enough for the board to have a “position on the proposed cement plant.” A position that I dare say most members believe should and would be a stand against this type of development.

I would like to point out the MISSION STATEMENT of CFGBA is “CFGBA promotes the construction of environmentally responsible, profitable, healthy places to live and work.” Once again I would like to point out “CFGBA promotes the construction of environmentally responsible, profitable, healthy places to live and work.”

It is because of these and other recent choices by the board that I haven’t come to the last number of meetings and have questioned my membership in this organization. An organization I once had great hopes for.

Re: CFGBA - Titan Issue

I am stunned and disappointed that CFGBA has not yet addressed this important community issue. I had assumed that they were collaborating with other environmental groups in the area in opposing this project. They now have Titan knocking on their door with check in hand, and they are waiting to draft a statement. How sad and absurd! I have attended a handful of meetings, and thought this group to be progressive and forward thinking. I guess not!

I for one am fine with the approach so far taken by the board. I think the titan issue has brought forth a lot of knee jerk reaction from this community and am glad to see the CFGBA taking the time for a measured thoughtful response to recent events. As for the mission statement, this association as I understand it is here to promote sustainable construction, but does not necessarily exist to actively condemn non sustainable activities. Its enough for a volunteer based board to be a force for positive change, without holding them accountable for everything that happens in our community.
That being said, I do think it is time that the CFGBA make a decision regarding this donation which would make a simple statement. Given all the clamoring and debate that we've seen of late within the ranks and at the meetings I also think that the time has come to craft a simple yet nuanced position regarding Titan. Get it out there and put it to bed.

I agree that CFGBA needs to decide one way or the other on this issue. I am concerned that someone who considers themselves (and I am assuming here) to be an environmentalist, would speak of "knee jerk reactions" & Titan in the same sentence. Let us be clear -- while Titan may bring a few jobs, the damage they would cause to our area would be horrendous! To think otherwise is insane!

Re: CFGBA - Titan Issue

The issue of whether the CFGBA accepts Roanoke Cement as a member does not equal the issue of whether the board of the CFGBA, or Bill, or anyone else supports the Titan project, no matter how many times people try to confuse the two.

The statements posted under News/Announcements on the CFGBA website should make that clear.
