Father Kept Daughter in Dungeon for 24 Years, Had 7 Kids With Her
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23613547-601,00.html
A guy in Austria claimed his daughter went missing 24 years ago. In reailty, she was kept locked in the basement where he sexually abused her, resulting in 7 children.
quote: Behind a hidden door in the cellar, police discovered a complex of small windowless rooms less than 2m high, where Elisabeth was kept imprisoned with three of her children -- her 19-year-daughter Kerstin and two sons, aged five and 18.
Three others -- a boy and two girls aged 12 to 16 -- were formally adopted by Josef and his wife, Rosemarie, and allowed to attend school.
Fritzl had claimed for years they were dumped on him with a note from his missing daughter saying she was unable to care for them.
{...}
Elisabeth was "greatly disturbed" and agreed to talk only after receiving assurances her children would be cared for and that she would no longer have to see her father.
Police psychologists are caring for Elisabeth and her six surviving children. A spokesman said that when the two boys emerged from the basement on Sunday, they "saw the daylight for the first time in their lives".
{...}
As well as Elisabeth, Mr Fritzl had four children, all of whom have families of their own. Police said the dungeon was taboo for the rest of the family, including his wife, who claimed to have known nothing about her daughter's fate.
Somehow, I'm doubting the wife's story that she didn't know what had happened to her daughter. If your husband locks up the basement and won't let you down there after your daughter "dissapears", but babies keep mysteriously appearing, one would think that she'd be intelligent enough to put two and two together.

Ok.. perhaps they don't make dungeons in Austria like they do basements here in the US.. but there are certain noises that a woman makes when she is in labor.. and SEVEN child births might be a little difficult to hide.. and let's not get into the smell.
What the hell is wrong with people? Ugh this would be such a nice planet without them all.

Soundproofing perhaps?
Other than that, all I have to say is

Here's another article on the same story:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/04/28/20080428austria28-on.html
It doesn't say anything about sound-proofing, only that the dungeon was made of reinforced concrete. That might provide some sound-dampening, but I still don't believe the wife wouldn't have heard anything over the years: screams of childbirth, children playing, etc.

Yeah, I pretty much think she's full of ****.. but let's put her aside a moment.. did this man not have other children? Or is it possible they were all "out of the nest" when he tossed his daughter in the dungeon? (if you haven't figured it out, I'm a little to grossed out to actually read the whole article--either of them--but obviously not grossed out enough that I can't ask questions lol)

From what it sounds like, he raised a lot of children of all ages, all while his daughter was in the dungeon, including those he said that he'd "adopted" after his missing daughter sent them to him. (Why did they never mention mom in the basement?)

Re: Father Kept Daughter in Dungeon for 24 Years, Had 7 Kids With Her
the CNN article does say the basement had been soundproofed:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/04/28/austria.cellar/index.html
quote: The entrance was via a small door, hidden behind cupboards in the basement, controlled by an electronic keyless-entry system. Polzer said that the prison was hard to find, even if someone was looking for it, and had been soundproofed.
"Even though they shouted and called they were not in a position to let anyone hear them," Polzer told the press conference.
{...}
Detectives made the grim discovery about the cellar earlier this month after Kerstin was hospitalized in Amstetten after falling unconscious and taken to a hospital in Amstetten by her grandfather with a SOS note from her mother hidden on her.
{...}
When Kerstin fell ill, Fritzl apparently told his wife and the hospital that his "missing" daughter had dropped off the sick girl on his doorstep.
In an effort to find out about Kerstin's condition, the hospital and police asked the media to put out a bulletin requesting any information about the girl or her missing mother, attorney general Gerhard Sedlacek told NTV.
Sometime later, Fritzl brought Elisabeth out of the cellar, telling his wife that she had returned home with her two children after a 24-year absence, police said.

I'm not believing that the mother didn't know.

Re: Father Kept Daughter in Dungeon for 24 Years, Had 7 Kids With Her
The room was sound-proofed and was locked using a keyless entry system hidden behind cabinets in the basement. According to the police, his wife and their children were unaware that all of this was going on in their own home.
