True, that is a possibility. It still drives me batty that the hardcovers cost nearly 3 times what the paperbacks cost though.

I do have some collector's sets of hardcover books but most of mine are paperback. I can buy more books that way with less money, they don't tend to take as much space on my poor, cramped bookshelf, and they last just as long because I picked up the nerdy habit of keeping my books carefully sealed in plastic bags when I travel with them, even just down the road. Picked that up when I noticed the teachers did it to the books they lent students in school. Figured that'd be a great way to keep them from getting battered in my bag. lol

But how about Marilyn Manson burning an American Flag and tearing up the bible.

He is rich off of American dollars, and the old bible shredding...I am just positive you can spin that to something just wonderful.

so one sided here in applacha.

And just which "organization" was he representing when he performed these actions? Oh.. that's right.. None.. he was doing it for the shock value only and it worked. You said it yourself.. he got rich off it. Capitalism.. the Murikkkan dream.

If you really want the hardcovers but don't want to pay the price for them, go to Half Price Books in Columbus or Cincinnati. (Whenever I travel, one of the first things I look for online is whether they have a Half Price Books store.)

I swear, that place is a veritable paradise. You never know what you'll find. Once, I had been waiting for months for a new book to come out and lo-and-behold, I found it there a month before the release date! It was an advanced copy that they send out to newspapers and other reviewers before the book is released to the general public.

That's an excellent idea. I wonder why I never thought of that.

I always have a book that I carry around with me in my backpack. (Can't stand purses. Never could. I use a backpack instead. At my age, it gets me some interesting looks.) By the time I've finished with it, it usually looks like it's seen better days, from rattling around in there with my hairbrush, drink bottle and the other mysterious debris that seem to accumulate inside a bag. (Ever notice how that junk manages to expand over time to fill up the bag no matter how large or small it may be? It's like a goldfish.)

I used to have a fabric cover that a friend of mine made for me. (She makes and sells them for Bible covers, but she made a special one just for me.) It had handles and a pocket for pens and notes, and even a large fabric bookmark attached with a long ribbon, but it started to get to be a pain to change it every time I switched books. (And I also kept getting interrupted while reading by Christians who assumed I was reading the Bible and wanted to voice their approval.)

A plastic Zip-Loc seems like a perfect solution.

In college, I picked up the habit of taping the corners of my books to keep the damage from splitting the covers.

Seconded on being annoyed at the people constantly stopping and voicing their approval because they think you're reading a bible. I was sitting in the park, reading a book one day last year and had people coming up to me and asking if I was reading the bible (it was a black, hard covered book).

Their facial expressions would probably have been amusing if they had seen the title of the book: "Software Exorcism" lol

I carry a purse, but it's built to double as a backpack. I prefer them that way - much easier on the shoulders when you have to carry them around for a while. And yes, it really is amazing how they fill up, isn't it?

People are always amazed at how much stuff I pull out of it when I'm looking for that one thing I need that's fallen to the bottom, too. Carry not only the standard stuff, but lotion, antibacterial gel, some of those little wipes they give you at steakhouses, a case with my sunglasses in it, gum, lotion, eyedrops, hairbrush, a mini stapler, nail care kit, calculator, cell phone, notepads, pens, chapstick, a menthol rub for my arthritis, altoid, a mirror, full-sized pictures of my family and pets... I've probably left some things out. lol

But yeah, I've always kinda had an eye out to try and find one of those bible tote things that didn't have any symbols on it. I just want a generic book tote. Plain, no markings on the thing, durable, zippable, handled... because I like toting books with me and a lot of the books I read are too large for the average cover (plus my fondness for paperbacks makes the book jackets somewhat difficult to use - do more harm than good for those).

If it's not a valuable paperback, one of the things you can do is put a strip of clear packing tape along the edges of the cover and on the spine to protect it from dings. (Sort of like the kind of hard lamination that libraries use to extend the lives of their paperbacks, but done on the cheap.)

If you're going to do this, I advise you not to try to fold the tape over the edge of the cover. Carefully lay it along the edge, not overlapping. If you try to wrap it around the edge of the cover, it will come unstuck every time and collect the lint and debris in the bottom of your bag.
