Online community bans ugliness

Story

I'm pointing to this as proof that high school really never ends.

quote:

TORONTO — An online community is launching in Canada today for the exclusive use of attractive people, complete with a “strict ban on ugliness.”

Prospective members of beautifulpeople.net submit a photo and profile in hopes of being deemed attractive enough to be a member by those who have already passed the subjective voting process.

quote:

The site is already in 15 other countries, and Greg Hodge, the managing director, says Canada was chosen because “there are many gorgeous people in this country,” though he adds “there are also many uglies.”

Hodge says the website “separates the wheat from the chaff.”

Robert Hintze, the site’s founder, says its appeal is that good-looking people can network without “traipsing through numerous unattractive profiles.”

Just what I wanted for my low self esteem shallow self-validation needs. After all, life is so much better when people tell you how beautiful you are. Talk about superficial.

And looking at the site, if you use anything other than IE, you get sent to an error page that states they don't support your browser.

Apparently they try to weed out "geeky" people early lol

I would be utterly horrified if I thought anyone valued me simply for my appearance.

That's one of the reasons why I love the anonymity of the internet so much-- it makes us all equal, only valued for our words. It strips us of the social pressures of gender, age, race and appearance. It even gives us a chance to parse our words so that they come out exactly as we planned (if only real life was the same in that regard!)

Evidently intelligence isn't a selection issue either.

Yeah-Huh.

Online, all we have are our words to present ourselves. We are judged by the content of our posts and the wisdom of our words. There is no prejudice against those of another color because we can't see their color. There is no judgment on the basis of gender (unless, of course, the poster intentionally reveals their gender) because we cannot see whether the poster is male or female.* We are not judged by our income or our social status because that is not an issue.

All we have are our words. We start out on equal footing. It's a sheer meritocracy. Of course, some, by their words, gain an unfavorable reputation while others' words are respected, but again, that's a judgment of merit, not one of prejudice based on characteristics.

* I've noted that many posters assume I am male. I've speculated about the reasoning behind it.

I thought you were male when I first "met" you. Not sure why.
