Miniature dachshund gnaws off diabetic owner's toe

story

I'm just kind of staring at the screen on this one...

quote:

(07-03) 21:35 PDT Alton, Ill. (AP) --

An Illinois woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep. Linda Floyd told the Alton Telegraph for a story Wednesday that her beloved Roscoe was euthanized because of safety concerns.

The 56-year-old says she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage from diabetes. She discovered the toe missing after waking from a nap Monday. She called her daughter, who phoned 911.

A veterinarian says the toe had been bandaged because of a healing hangnail. That might have somehow attracted the dog.

In retrospect, lighting the match was my big mistake, but I was only trying to retrieve the gerbil...

Paaaaleeeeeeze!!! I understand that she had no feeling in the toe, but COME ON!!! I wake up when my dog repositions himself on the bed. I "think" I would feel the pressure of him PULLING on my toe. A mini weenie.... it isn't as if he could take it all in one gulp.

I shall refrain from further comment.

This does seem kind of fishy. I wonder if a necropsy was done on the poor dog afterwards to ensure that he had actually consumed the toe. (Not that it would matter then because the poor pooch was already dead.)I wonder what kind of home she has because it would make more sense to me if her toe had actually been bitten off by a rat and the dog was afterward licking the wound.

I know that some dogs are attracted to wounds. A friend of mine, whenever he gets a cut or scrape, has to keep the injured limb out of reach of his dog who will immediately set to licking the boo-boo. It's their way of trying to help promote healing.
