K-Movie: 봄여름가을겨울그리고봄 (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring)

class float-right ImageOfficial sites: class ul class li Sony ClassicsThis magical movie is showing again on AZN TV this afternoon and tonight. I'll write more later, but I must say it's one of the most beautiful and wonderful movies I've seen in some time. Highly, highly recommended.

The setting is the floating temple to the right, and the film follows a Buddhist monk through the seasons of his life.

The cinematography is just gorgeous. The movie is set on the floating temple in the middle of a mountain lake surrounded by nature.

But the rest of the movie is wonderful, too, filled with caring, passion, cycles of life mirrorring the cycles of the seasons, and so forth.

AZN's is airing it one more time this Sunday Sep 24th at 9pm. Don't miss it!

(Next week's Korean film is Shiri, which is a decent suspense thriller with the added bonus of exploring the feelings of Koreans on the split of North and South.)

Shiri also stars Kim Yun Jin from Lost. She is the female lead opposite Han Suk Kyu.

I highly recommend this film as well "Spring ,Summer ,Fall ,Winter and Spring " The setting is exquisite ,and worth viewing on that basis alone.
If anyone missed it on AZN ,I rented it at Blockbuster .

I have seen quite a few Korean films on AZN and Imaginasian .We are so lucky to have so much choice .

It would be great to have a place to recommend films to each other as well .

Films that I saw in the past few months that I really enjoyed :

Spring Bears Love

Art Museum by the Zoo

Christmas in August .

The Road Home .

These are in no particular order .

Happy Viewing !

Ah, this is a great list, addie. If you liked these films, you might also try Harmonium in My Memory and Bungee Jumping of Their Own with Lee Byung Hun, and you might be interested in JSA after having just been to the DMZ.

Re: K-Movie: 봄여름가을겨울그리고봄 (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring)

I purchased Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter in one of the money-saver deals that YesAsia offered. They grouped 4-5 same genre films together and sold the sets at a reduced price. Then I put most of the films on the shelf and forgot about them!

In checking this thread today, I re-read ccwf's review and the other comments. My interest has definitely been sparked. (I think the film would sell better if the description on YesAsia was replaced by some of yours!) From the blurb YesAsia posted, the film sounded rather drab and depressing.

Re: K-Movie: 봄여름가을겨울그리고봄 (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring)

I finally watched this movie the other night. My immediate reaction was that the tranquility and lack of action and civilization would make it impossible for a lot of people to sit through this one. Even I had to make a mental adjustment as I found myself uncomfortable at first—which was a shock to me because I was raised in the country and am always looking for a dose of solitude.

What I enjoyed...

The four seasons were beautiful there.
The photography was beautifully done.
The buddhist viewpoint was informative.
The 30-year old and where life had brought him.

What I did not enjoy....

The first little boy was frightening and unlikeable.
The torture of creatures in greater and lesser ways.
The philosophical view of life—humans and animals.

What I really enjoyed the most were the "special features" on the DVD. Watching them plan and build the temple on the lake. A couple of scenes deleted from the movie (one solving the mystery of the purple scarf lady).

Would I watch this movie again? No. For all that was pleasing to my senses, there was more that was distressing. The natural beauty of lake, trees, sky, etc., did not outweigh the negative message about humanity for me.
