Re: K-drama: 굳세어라 금순아 (Be Strong, Geum-soon) [Encore 9/21/09 @ pg 17]
OK,
I’m caught up with this drama (minus a few of the early eps).
I just can’t get into it. I don’t like most of the characters. E.g. Geem-soon is disrespectful and unappreciative of her in-laws. She has no grasp of reality. Her MIL is a negative person, as is her husband. I could go on about auntie, her grandmother, etc. The only characters I like so far are Shi-wan, Geem-ah, Sung-ran, and maybe Jae-hee. And for us males, Sung-ran and Geem-ah are the only eye candy. I know someone else mentioned how strange-looking Eun-joo is. She does look alien. She looks too strange for me to find her attractive. Geem-soon might look OK if I could get past her outrageous hair.
There’s been a few funny parts, and some decent drama, but overall, the negativism is getting to me. I’ll keep watching for awhile and hope it gets better.

AdWatcher, I believe if were able to watch at least from EP9 and up, you might better understand why GS's in-laws act the way they do, and to a certain extent how GS responds to situations.
I'm very much a believer on how one's environment/surroundings as a child shapes a person, and appreciate it when the writer or director or even actor demonstrate this in some form.
GS is an orphan. She only knows of Grandma's love, the only person who took care of her while growing up. Uncle, who hasn't made an appearance, has only so far helped her monetarily on certain occasions in the past with her education. Auntie never warmed up to her, most likely due to Grandma's favoritism. GS adopts her Grandma's straightforward and sometimes unthinking manner. Her perm was even likely inspired by her Grandma.
MIL never did see GS as DIL material from the start for her most beloved youngest son. She was extremely distressed and disappointed at her son when he showed up with GS and her Grandma (at Grandma's insistence). Add to that her hatred of GS when her son dies, just because GS made a call to him when she was lost, that brought him running back to Seoul. Note that prior to that GS had only been to Seoul twice.
The in-laws didn't even think of their unborn grandson when they kicked GS out of the house a day or two after her husband's death. At first I thought this strange, but then upon further thought, it actually makes some sense when the husband's family sees here as something extremely unlucky, especially when only 1-2 days after the marriage, the husband dies, coupled with the fact that GS is an orphan; her conception led to her father's death, and her birth left her mother "dead" as well.
Then we have to wonder if GS's marriage to her husband was ever registered, considering that even after 2 years living with her in-laws, MIL still threatens of kicking out of the house and she is asked not to go on family reunion outings with the family. She is in a situation where she's pretty much an outsider, as she can't even return to stay with her Grandma. But there is some comfort that she can go to her Grandma when she's in need.
class reveal class spoiler I'm worried about how lowly her in-laws will think of GS once Sung-ran becomes their DIL. Comparisons will be made, especially when Sung-ran will be living with her in-laws (just like how GS was supposed to live w/ her husband and her in-laws till they become a "family").
With the ox-bone incident, I can understand why GS "stole" some for her side of the family, even though I didn't approve of her giving that much. Watching the episodes thus far, did we ever see GS's in-laws ever make a visit to Grandma or now the "new" home in Seoul? If anything, it has been Grandma who does the visiting! Grandma is certainly older than either in-laws, shouldn't her in-laws be showing some sort of respect by visiting her? Not to mention GS is trying to appease her Aunt, since Auntie doesn't want to take care of Hwee-sung, even though she's never really there when Hwee-sung is taken there--it's only Grandma who does the babysitting.
GS isn't a person who hides her feelings or thoughts. She eventually tells her MIL what she did, seeking forgiveness. And she was that much gladder when she saw how understanding MIL was. She and her MIL supposedly are getting along much better.
Edit - Sorry for the 'spoiler protection' if the comment is only speculation. If not, it is a significant spoiler at this point in our viewing.

Re: K-drama: 굳세어라 금순아 (Be Strong, Geum-soon) [Encore 9/21/09 @ pg 17]
Episodes 31–32 (Wed)
Episodes 33–34 (Fri)
Sung-ran tells Shiwan the whole truth about her past: she was married, divorced after a couple years, and has a 9-year old son who lives with his father. (I think she said he was 9... can't remember.) Shi-wan was shocked, of course. But he didn't seem angry about it until Tae-wan sort of off-handedly remarked that she was only having "fun." Now, he's basically giving her the 'silent treatment,' even at work.
Now that Sung-ran countered his drunken attack blaming her for his disappointments, maybe he'll do a little thinking. It was good to see her stand up for herself. As much as I like Shiwan, he does live in his little bubble of inexperience and assumption.
What about Dr. Jang wanting GS to donate a kidney for his wife? How is he going to handle this with GS? It's a little much to track her down as a donor and not tell her the real connection. Yet, his wife is dead set against any contact with GS.
We got an explanation of sorts of why Mrs. Jang abandoned GS, leaving her with Granny. Do I have this correct? Her husband died. She was going to marry Dr. Jang and bring GS with her. He wanted that. Then she said she got pregnant. With Eun-jin, I presume. So, she left GS behind for the sake of Dr. Jang's mother, Eun-soo and Eun-jin.
What does that mean? Were they going to pass off GS as their child? But then when she got pregnant too soon, it was impossible. Why was it impossible? Was she involved with Dr. Jang before her husband's death? How old was GS when Mrs. Jang left her behind? Why couldn't she just say she and Dr. Jang had two children very close together? Eun-soo was very young then and probably wouldn't have known the difference. If they could fool Dr. Jang's mother with GS, why not with a second child, too? Something's missing here that I'm not getting.

from what I got of that scene nchristi, Dr. Jang never really wanted GS, he only "agreed" at GS's mom insistence. But things got a bit complicated since Dr. Jang's mom was dying, so he couldn't bring it up with his mom. In other words, Dr. Jang's mom never knew Dr. Jang's new wife was a widow w/ a baby. If he really wanted GS, wouldn't he and GS's mom have gone to get her once Dr. Jang's mom passed away? That is why GS's mom is adamant in not wanting any contact w/ GS, and why she was somewhat hostile towards Dr. Jang. They basically abandoned her, and now because mom needs a kidney, Dr. Jang decides he must contact GS. Very cold-blooded, since he's never even thought of the baby they abandoned as a child of "his".
