Re: K-Drama: Yellow Handkerchief
“Yellow Handkerchief” was truly memorable: without a doubt the best drama of its kind to come out of Korea. I had to pull that “last-episode” tape out of my archives to review it, but I enjoyed watching it again so much that I didn’t really mind.
YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF – Final episode:
At home, a very pregnant Ja-young tells Ji-min to get ready to meet Sang-min. She apologizes for putting him through this. As they leave, Grandma Sohn sees them off. She tells Ji-min to go and spend some time with him, and that maybe that will help him get better.
At the hospital, Sang-min seems barely conscious, but he awakens when he sees Ja-young and Ji-min there. Sang-min tells Ji-min that “uncle” has been sick, and Sang-min’s father somewhat angrily reminds him that he’s his father, not his uncle. Sang-min’s father urges Ji-min to call Sang-min “father,” but Sang-min tells him that it’s okay, he doesn’t have to. But Ji-min calls him “daddy” anyway, and both are tearful.
Sang-min then tells Ja-young that he’s sorry: sorry he hurt her; sorry for everything he’s done to her. And he tells her that, just as Yuna is his daughter, Ji-min is Young-joon’s son.
Outside, Min-joo admits to Sang-min’s father that she was the one who asked Ja-young to bring Ji-min to the hospital. He thanks her for doing so. Later, Sang-min’s father tells Sang-min that he’s seen a whole new side of Min-joo, and that he should get well and support her.
Back home, Ja-young tells Young-joon what happened. She tells him that if Sang-min really does die, she may someday – in the very distant future – be able to tell Ji-min that his birthfather really loved him.
A few months later (June) we see that “rumor has it” that Sun-joo is getting married, but that her fiancée’s parents disapprove, because she’s an entertainer. But we do see them exchanging rings, promising to wear them forever.
Sang-min is living his last days at home with his family. He’s leaving messages to Yuna on his computer, making up a list of books for Yuna to read in the years ahead. But he’s so weak, he can’t quite finish, and he goes to the bedroom and then collapses on the bed. Yuna hops on the bed beside him and opens up her “Winnie the Poo” music box for him to hear. Sang-min dies just as Yuna’s music box suddenly stops working. She repeatedly asks her father to fix it, but he doesn’t answer her.
And, as Sang-min dies, Ja-young gives birth to her baby daughter at the hospital.
A few days later, Min-joo calls Ja-young, telling her that Sang-min had been laid to rest. She congratulates Ja-young on her daughter.
Final scene: Ja-young, Young-joon, Ji-min and their new daughter pose for a family photograph. They snap the photo and freeze the frame. And then, they roll the final credits.
THE END
