I saw on yesasia that One Million Blossom of Roses (KBS drama) was out but it is only in the Taiwan version. Does anyone know if and/or when it will be out in English?? Thanks.

I have not ordered from them, but it's been my experience that anything coming from Hong Kong , Taiwan, or Malaysia has subtitles below the standard we are now used to. There was a time when this was the only source of subbed dramas. The subtitles often had several grammatical and spelling errors and names were the Chinese names instead of Korean names. And in terms of accuracy, I can't really say as I can't speak any of the languages involved. Really not a big deal if you want to find the subbed kdrama you really want. Prices are generally very low comparatively, but you get what you pay for. I suspect it may not be a licensing agreement so much as a piracy issue.

K-dramas on DVD with ENG subs *updated 08/31/2005*
"I am unaware of any of the daily dramas (5 nights/week) having been released with English subs, unfortunately. "
Thanks for the info. Looks like I've been hoping in vain for the daily dramas to come out on dvd. Does anyone know if there is a way we can encourage the release of these shows?

Only from my experience, can I speak, but I always follow that if the price is too good to be true, it's probably a boot. Also, there are several companies from Taiwan and Hong Kong that regularly release Japanese anime series with English and Chinese subs. These sets sell well below the price set here in the states or Japan. For example, you could buy a box set of the Ghibli movies for about $45.00. The box set included 6 movies. If you bought the legit versions from Japan, the cost would be about $240.00 (assuming each disk cost about $40.00). This is quite an incentive to buy the Chinese versions, and these companies have become very well known for the sets they offer. Nevertheless, they are still technically bootlegs. I believe it's due to these governments not acknowledging copyright laws that these companies can flourish, that, and that the price is pretty enticing. These sets can be purchased almost anywhere dvds are sold in independent dvd stores. You won’t find these sets in Suncoast or Sam Goodys. Occasionally, the bootleggers are the only ones providing the subtitling, which of course, encourages piracy. Or even worse, they take the fansubs that are provided on the internet to the fans for free, download and burn the dvds at home and sell on ebay for a fraction of the price. Typically, if it's on ebay, it's a boot. Not always, but most typically. I have bought a couple of dramas from Yesasia that came from Malaysia (Winter Sonata and Autumn Tale). Don't know if these were boots. There was a time a few years ago that people were blasting Yesasia for selling boots and not acknowledging that they were so. Now that asian film/drama/music/pop culture has such a great following, Yesasia has become very successful and I doubt sells any bootlegs. Now with so much available, I look for the country of origin and try to find out if that is who is releasing the dvd. If it’s a Korean drama and it’s being released from Hong Kong, my feeling is that it most likely is a bootleg. However, I am most willing to be proven wrong about this. I may be relying on old information. I do know that any country can buy the dvd rights to movies and then create the dvd from their country. That’s why we have American releases of Japanese films – like Ring. The original Japanese version was released by an American company because that company bought the dvd rights for that film. It might be working the same way in Hong Kong for the Korean dramas.
