Anyeong Hasaeyo! Good morning BDF emoticon

Smoochie: I think there's a hidden script in that scenario and this is how I imagine it. Let's remember at episode 1, Sunchun was a shadow to Sunjae's real father. Aside from being beaten in the music business, his love was stolen too. Apparently, he was already in love with Myungja before he introduced him to Sunjae's father. But one week after the introduction, Myungjae & Sunjae's father got married. That enraged SunChun. After Yungchul's (Sunjae's dad) died, when Sunchun went to the hospital and promised Myungja that he will take care of them, I'm sure their relationship started then. It could be platonic in the beginning, but knowing the characteristic of Sunchun and the fact that he was in love with this woman, it could'nt be too long before Myungja finally give in since she's a very weak and dependent woman. At that time, Sunchun's real wife was still alive. It was only when Sunjae was 11 years old that this relationship was brought out in the open. So Myungja was a kept woman since Sunjae was a baby. There's plenty of guilt for Myungja to carry when she moved into the house of Sunchun, although she didn't know that she was used by Sunchun. emoticon

On the other side, Minchul's mother probably suspected this already so for 10 or 11 years, she has suffered silently. It was probably a loveless marriage in the first place. So even before their mother's death, Minchul and Minji lived in a home with no real love from their father. I'm sure Sunchun was always away on business or with Myungja. emoticon

Maybe Sunjae, before they moved into that house, has a better home scenario that Minchul and Minji. I imagine that when Sunchun visits them, there would be more real family bonding since he loves Myungja.

These, of course, is my imagination.

Nsheldon: Don't worry, we can always go back with you in whatever scenario you want to discuss. If you have a point to raise, we will be here to agree or counter your view. Good luck with your class! emoticon

Hello BD Family emoticon

Very insightful, emceema. You're probably right on the money with your explanation on how this big mess came about. If what you say is true, Myungja is a bigger dope than I already think she is. And like you said a weak and dependent woman. For her to accept this man into her life and her bed was bad enough, but then to move into his home with his children, about five minutes after their mother's death was the last straw. It makes me think of her as an adulterer and worse than that, uncaring and not at all innocent in being a contributor to those children's misery.

How could she think that would be okay?? One look at their grandmother screaming and carrying on would have been enough to give me a wake-up call about things to come. Kids crying, the grandmother thrown out, her son being humiliated, she herself being hit, what could she have been thinking? How could this situation possibly be rectified?

If I'm right, Min Ji lived in that hovel with her grandmother the whole time Min Chul was away at school. Nobody went to get her? Nobody tried to bring her home? Not even a monetary allowance for her and her grandmother, so they could have lived decently? How could she watch this in all good conscience and still live with that brute, with her own son living in that house and very nicely too? As long as Min Chul and Min Ji weren't there he was probably pretty happy. An overly affectionate mother and a doting and proud father. What could be bad???

That also means that for those years, she, Sun Jae and Sun Chun lived like one big happy family, while the children who belonged in that house lived in misery and exile. Their mother's dead, after an unhappy life with a cheating husband and Sun Jae gets to be the fair haired boy. Of course they were resentful and bitter toward him. While I don't like Min Ji's behavior, we saw her being loving and sweet to her sick grandmother, so we know she's capable of real feelings. I also know this kid had nothing to hang onto, everyone she loved was gone, except her brother once her grandmother died.

Though I feel for Sun Jae, because he's paying for his mother's sins, the other two children bore the brunt of this disaster. I don't blame them for their feelings toward their father and stepmother and Sun Jae who, according to what they believe is living proof of their wrongdoing. His only real problem is not being accepted by Min Chul and Min Ji, but he already understands why that is. What's he going to say? "I know my mother's a brazen hussy, but why take it out on me"? emoticon

We have to understand the reason behind Mungji's putting up with Min Ji's abuse and Min Chul's coolness toward her. She understands it very well and lives with it because she believes she deserves to be treated that way. She's full of shame and guilt and should be. Her son put it very clearly to her that night in the tent bar. She didn't try to defend herself, because she knew he was right.

Image

Aside from Min Chul, her grandmother was the last remnant of the family Min Ji knew. Once she died, all she had to lean on was Min Chul. He had a hard time trying to control her and prepare her for a future. He had a hard time getting her through a normal day. He's beginning to feel hopeless. He really needed a lot of help. He's counting on YonSoo being that help. emoticon

Yon Soo's got a hard road ahead of her trying to get that girl in hand. Sena on the other hand will be less of a problem, because the better she behaves the quicker she'll realize her dream. She got the better part of that deal thanks to Yon Soo's sacrifice. Min Chul doesn't have to personally do anything once the wheels of his production company start churning. He's already done his part just by getting her accepted by Victory. The rest is up to Sena and whether or not she has any talent and how hard she's willing to work. We already know the girl is driven, though so far I haven't seen any talent. emoticon

This is getting good. I know I always say that, but I mean it. emoticon

I'm going to watch some of this episode again and come back in the morning to talk some more. Ya know.....just in case I missed something. emoticon

This is too serious. emoticon We need something to brighten the mood here. emoticon

K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)

Good Morning BD,

You both put it all together so well and there isn't anything else I can add. That's right, from the moment Myungja gave birth and Sunchun entered that delivery room, Myungja became his kept woman when he told the nurses that he was her guardian.
And how did he know she was giving birth at that moment? Who called him? Was it Myungja? I can't think of one person who might have called him besides her or maybe I missed something.

She was pretty far along in her pregnancy already when her husband was killed so I don't think their affair started until after her husband died. I do think that Myungja and Sunchun were an item before her first marriage though.
Myungja was the other woman for ten long years ruining Sunchun's wife's life in the process and her children's lives.

Emceema, so you don't like Minchul's Tarzan like way of dragging Yonsoo off to a party and not telling her where he's taking her. I don't mind since he's the one doing the dragging. I liked it when Suky was doing the dragging too.
In real life I wouldn't like it at all and not put up with it but here we are in Kdrama land and anything goes, almost.
Really now, Yonsoo could have yelled and refused to budge but she didn't. LOL

I just love all the pictures you're putting up smoochie. He especially always looks handsome when he's wearing sunglasses, don't you think? I love him in that top picture in the crowd, those lucky fans!

I don't consider LBH short by any means and 5'8 or 5'9 is not short. I can think of a bunch of actors without going into their names who are 6' tall and more than once I questioned to myself if THEY were really that tall (and they really are.)

You want to know why I wondered? I'll tell you anyway. It's because their leading ladies are almost as tall as them. This makes the guy look not that tall, even a 6' tall guy. But they really are.
I guess in our minds we have this mental picture of the girl should always be much shorter. Ji Woo is 5'8 I believe. Put her in heels and she'll even make a 6' tall actor look short.

Sena, Sena, Sena! She's doing a complete makeover on herself and the best she can come up with is orange hair in a ratty style all it's own! LOL
The first time Minchul looked at her like this...I don't know what you'd call the expression on his face. Disgust? Amusement? I don't think it was amusement.

Orange hair isn't always that bad, Sena's rival has orange hair. It's just that Sena comes off so obnoxious and put it all together and she really isn't what Director Lee ever had in mind for his next top singer.
He does have the easier part of "the deal" than Yonsoo though. He just has to make sure and hope Sena has some talent. Remember, he doesn't like to lose.

Anyeong Hasaeyo! Good morning BDF emoticon

Jasy: There are really some tall Korean actors like Bae Yong Joon, Ryu Jin, Jang Dong Gun. Choi Ji Woo is only one Korean actress I know around 5'8" in height. LBH former girlfriend, Song Hye Kyu is barely a 5 footer. That's why these two were so perfect in All In. Also, Song Seung Hun and Son Ye Jin in Summer Scents are perfectly matched.

Smoochie: Where do you get these pictures? I went to a soompi's BD discussion site and I didn't see a lot of pictures.

I don't know why we all gravitate to LBH when we're discussing BD but if his character was Sunjae and Ryu Jiwon is Minchul, would we be attracted? Ryu Jiwon is a 6 footer too and totally matches Choi Ji Woo's height.

 emoticon emoticon

No way! LBH, in all his shortness, is a manly man and his deep, soothing voice will not fit with the Sena scenario. Besides, Ryu Jiwon looks younger than Choi. Casting here is perfect as it is.

One thing about this drama, there is no evil MIL, or one single character that we really, really hate (compared to BB). Sena is hateful but tolerable and Myungja is pitiful. Who can we pick on? emoticon

Tonight is the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Beijing so I might not be watching any k-drama. Have a good weekend to all of you emoticon

The actress who plays Narae is really tall too, and though she's always a supporting actress maybe it doesn't matter much. I do notice that every time she's paired off with someone, he is usually waaay shorter than her. I think in her case it's done on purpose to add to her funny "romances."

Interesting to me is an older drama I watched not long ago starring Song Seung Hun. I forgot the name of it.

In the story he tells someone that he's 5'9," he actually says that, and right away I thought how can that be? He is even in height with Kwong Sang Woo when they are side by side and Kwon is 6' I believe.
Maybe he was still growing in that older drama? LOL

Who can we hate? I don't know about hate but I won't like Sunjae pretty soon and that will stay with me a long time once it happens. But I couldn't call him hateable, what do you think?
I guess we should hate Sunchun and pick on him. LOL

I once asked a similar question emceema. If all of our heart throbs were always playing the bad guy and not the hero, would they still be our heart throbs? Food for thought. LOL

Besides loose translation and dramatic license in drama dialogue, there is the matter of converting height from centimeters to inches. I recently did some research on this for a different drama. 188cm converted in Google = 74.015748 inches. In converting that to feet, people with math skills came up with answers ranging from 6'1" to 6'2". (How that is, is beyond me...)

Many actresses seem very tall compared with the male actors (who are still placed standing on something in close ups where they want the guy taller). In reading KoreanWiz's actor profiles, I used to laugh that nearly every actress was listed as 5'7' and they all weighed 105 lbs.

I wouldn't trust all the bio profiles on height and weight. I've read that weight above 105 is considered "fat" for a K-actress, so most will list their weight as 105 or less. Also, just as here in US casting, men (especially) will list their "official" height a little taller than they are just to avoid being rejected as the casting agent goes through profiles looking for certain features before they actually choose to see anyone in person.

Hello BD Family

Nchristi, I think you're right about the male actors exaggerating their height. In almost every bio the actor in question is usually 183cm. I've always thought, "are all Korean actors the same height?".

I'm very old and I remember a very popular actor, Alan Ladd, who had to stand on a box for his love scenes. He was that short.

I still say its okay if LBH isn't 6'. He looks really tall to me when he stands on his talent, his sexiness, his charisma and his knowledge of how to use the camera to his advantage. He may be be a sex symbol, but he's also an actors' actor.

Jasy, I saw an actor who takes my breath away and he played the bad guy and I was actually rooting for him to get away with the crime.emoticon emoticon emoticon Does that tell you anything?

We had this same conversation in BB, when we tried to imagine Suky and Im Beom switching roles. I don't think it'd have worked then either.

Min Chul's personna is too strong for Ryu Jiwon to pull off and I can't even begin to imagine LBH's strong personality being put on a back burner to play Sun Jae. I just don't think it'd be believable. I've seen him play many things, but I've never seen him play a weak, sad personality. I don't think I'd buy it.

I have to go home now. Its almost the end of my work day. I'll be back though.

Later. emoticon

K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)

Good Morning BD,

When Sunjae and his mother went for a drink together, he probably spilled his guts to her for the first time.

Over drinks he tells her she was wrong when she fell in love with a married man and moved in as soon as his wife died. He asks why did she have him and tells her he was happier when they lived alone when he had no father.

What was interesting to me was when Sunjae tells her "you have nothing to say no matter how bad they treat you."

Sunjae's words could mean one of two possible things. Either that she never sticks up for herself and he's angry about that or because of what she's done with a married man, she has NO RIGHT to say anything.
I wonder which it is.

With Yonsoo in the car after the party and walking around the art gallery, he comes upon Sunjae and Myungja walking home after having a few drinks.

Minchul immediately stops the car and after a few words he tells Myungja to get in, he'll take her home.
I thought to myself, see, Minchul isn't really that bad towards her like it looks most of the time. He must care somewhat to want to take her home even if it's only out of duty. He could have just driven past and not look back if he wanted to.

When he takes Myungja in his car,, Yonsoo has to get out which is okay with her but unknown to her and Minchul I believe, is a very drunken Sunjae.

I think Minchul's real hate is at his father and he just tolerates Myungja most of the time. Minji is the one who shows her hate and anger towards Myungja, I suppose, woman to woman.
Minchul hates his father most and dislikes Sunjae.

Anyway, Minchul goes looking for Sunjae after while because he hasn't arrived home yet. What he finds is an out of his mind drunken Sunjae (did Minchul see him crying?) with Yonsoo trying to get him to walk.
As Minchul is watching this, Sunjae falls down into Yonsoo's arms.

Minchul doesn't like what he sees and in great anger yells at him to get up. I have to say I love Minchul like this, strong, in control and in charge, the older brother acting like a father in some ways, what he says goes.

I wouldn't say Minchul is always in Sunjae's face but this time Sunjae is, what word can I use? involving Yonsoo in his misery, a woman Minchul brought home to tutor his sister and who Minchul feels very much responsible for I'm sure.
For her to deal with a drunken Sunjae has made Minchul livid.

Another thing interesting to me is Minchul calls Myungja "mother." I suppose he does this out of respect woulsn't you think? Or an old habit? I'm sure he was forced to as a child but now he's an adult, he doesn't have to.
I don't think I've heard Minji call her mother ever.

Minchul acknowledges to Myungja that he knows she works hard on the memorial every year, and he asks that she stop doing it, he will go to the grave instead from now on.
Sounds very respectful and caring of her feelings to me.

Actually on this day, I see no disrespect on Minchul's part towards Myungja and maybe there really isn't much at all. What do you think?
The chaos at home when it comes to a head usually involves Minji and then Minchul just sticks up for her. He has to, he's all she's got.
It's really Minji hating and disrespecting Myungja mostly.

Minchul is a man now and for him to go around screaming at Myungja would not be very manly of him. He mostly ignores her, it's Minji who gets him involved, and since he feels responsible for her, he does get involved.
I believe his issues are with his father, and rightly so.

A drunken Sunjae asks Minchul if mom died, would he put flowers on her grave or something to that effect. Minchul doesn't answer.

To that, Sunjae is besides himself, figuring his non-answer is a no. He's very upset to which Minchul simply tells him to just live longer than him. I guess that way Sunjae won't have to watch and wonder if he'll ever go to the grave. Yonsoo is taking this all in and she looks quite disturbed by it all.

The drama is really good, everyone is perfect in their roles and every episode is action packed too. I'm really enjoying it.

Yes, the height thing is interesting. I did some looking and LBH and Ko Soo are 5"10
Song Seung Hun is 5'10 1/2"
Can this be?

Go Joo Won and Kwon Sang Woo are 6"

I believe that KSW is 6' because I've seen him much taller than a
lot of everyday folks in pictures and a lot of his movies and the behind the scenes men.

I have noticed that standing side by side, sometimes SSH looks nearly the same height as KSW and other times he looks a bit shorter. Camera angle might play a part in this and shoes.

They're all good anyway, right?

I love the pictures smoochie. Yes, I love that picture and his strut. I really like the way he walks, I could describe it here but I think I'd better not. But I noticed it the very first time I ever watched him in a drama. LOL
