K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Good Morning BD,
I've been watching about the earthquake on TV and my thoughts were with all of you. I'm so glad everyone, hopefully, is alright. Such scary stories emceema and nseldon.
I think there is nothing more scarier than an earthquake and a tornado because you basically can't outrun it.
Well, let me say a few words here. LOL It's so hard to stay away for long.
BD is so good it's one of my top favorites. We're only in the beginning episodes and it's already so intense with so much going on. And it gets better. Really better.
Well now emceema, what about Minchul and Yonsoo's kissing scenes? My very favorite...
I don't know why I feel sorry for the mother. Afterall, she was a married man's mistress and young children were involved.
I never actually saw that so it's like out of sight, out of mind.
What I see is a mother who is softspoken and kind to these now adult kids, constantly taking insults from two of them. It's all very sad.
On the same hand, I understand Minji and Michul completely. How can they love another woman who was their father's mistress? I couldn't. It's as simple as that. So they're mean to her? I would think it would be hard for any adult child to live with their father's mistress under the same roof.
Throw in a nasty father who favors one child over his first two, finally sending Minchul out of the country and probably making life so miserable for Minji who was left there, she wanted to leave too. What kind of a father is that?
I throw the blame of this directly at the father first, then the cheating mistress/ mother, and not really the grandmother at all regardless of what she told Minji. Probably you all will disagree with me but that's my feelings.
I understand what you're saying smoochie, that eventually a young Minji would have to return to the family and her knowing all the dirty details about her father and mistress could only lead to disaster.
But somehow still, I think she had a right to know what went on in her parent's marriage but only at an older age.
She was a young adult when she went to live with grandma and Minchul left for three years to study. Maybe she was only told this stuff because Minji couldn't stand living in that house anymore and fled to grandma so she opened up to her. Maybe Minji asked.
I know it can't do a world of wonders for the child to know this kind of stuff but I don't think it should be kept secret either. It's a lose-lose situation all around because I feel sorry for Sunjae too.
As much as he's favored by his dad and doted on by his mother, he too is a very lonely person. Dad wants him to be a doctor and he studies as he's told to.
His love is music, it's in his genes from him bio father but he doesn't know that. His mom does but she ain't talking. This youngest kid who can have anything in the world, doesn't really. He can't even have a hobby playing music.
He's a poor little rich boy who is affected greatly by an overbearing father and a brother who loathes him. He tries so hard to be friends with Minchul but Minchul dismisses him every chance he gets. Very sad.
This is why he does his music secretly on the internet as Zero. It's the only way he can get some pleasure in HIS life.
Nsheldon, LBH has a little tiny scar on one side of his face so he's not totally perfect...
I love the actress who plays Narae. I've seen her in a few other things and she always plays the best friend. It's about time she was put in the lead in a drama.
She's so good in this one, I love her "mother hen" personality when it comes to Yonsoo and Sena. She's such a take charge woman and she's afraid of nothing. She's quite funny too.
She's gonna become a Singer's Manager come hell or high water. LOL Love her spunk!!
Smoochie, I also notice Yonsoo doesn't seek Minchul out except for the one time asking for help for her sister. That was work related.
The other time she was in his office it was because her manager sent her there about the stealing of the music dvds. It was the first time she was up close to Minchul and she was starring at him comparing when they were young and at the orphanage together. She doesn't know she's got the wrong guy. LOL
So I agree, she doesn't look for him but I will say she notices him everytime he walks by. And though when Minchul is in work and walks past her, did you notice that after her little office visit about Sena, the next time he walked past her, he keeps walking but his head is turned looking at her.
Now he's really noticing her and it's all uphill from there, maybe...

Anyeong Hasaeyo! Good morning BDF
Smoochie: Where did you get that gif on page 3? Isn't an AD for a men's perfume? I like how LBH seemed shy, then bursting into a smile. So cute!
OK, so Minji is probably 18 or 19 years old when she left the home and lived with her grandma, since she is currently 22 according to the introduction of characters on page 1. She is old enough to understand what's going on in her family. The fact, though, is the hatred she feels toward the stepmom is simply because the stepmom allowed it due to her own guilt. Had she stood her ground once in a while, Minji would at least hide that hatred and not so outright spewing venom on her face.
Of course, the root cause of all of these is Sun Chun, the father. While the stepmom accepted the abuse of her stepchildren, Sun Chun showered all his affection to the stepson. He even boasted to friends that Sunjae is the best son he ever had, even took him to a public bath house (I assume this happened due to a conversation in later episodes) which is the most intimate father-and-son bonding in Korea.
About Sunjae: He grew up with the love of a father (if you can call excessive doting as love) but is hated by his brother and sister. He saw the uneven treatment of Sun Chun towards him and his siblings so he must be guilty and understood how Minchul and Minji felt growing up. He was very obedient to his father but I don't think he loves him. So he overcompensated the love for his mother. His mother, however, was mostly defensive of Minchul and Minji and often harsh on Sunjae. How frustrating! Do you all think this is a realistic scenario?
Narae, the mother hen: Yes, I have seen this actress in other k-dramas. She looks more like an american rather than korean. She towers over a lot of people. Could she have started her career as a model? The character, though, is overdone. Nobody could be so caring and understanding like her since her relationship with Yonsoo didn't start when they were children but just five years ago, maybe. I think the writer brought her up to match that obnoxious store manager and a link towards the meeting of Minchil and Yonsoo.
Now that romance is blossoming between Minchul and Yonsoo, maybe it's time to bring in the triangle or quadrangle aspect into the scenario? Starting episode 4, if I can focus right, I promise to do my best in summarizing the 2nd disc.

Re: K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Good Morning BD Family
So many things going on at once here. I know they're not in order, but we see Sun Jae leading a double life. Involved in music and working with an employee of Victory. I know that wouldn't fly with his father. We see he and Sena forming some kind of relationship, whatever it is.
Both Sena and Min Ji are on the cusp of disaster. Both are out of control. Min Ji and her mean little friend seem to be slumming when they come across Sena touting for the bar. They think it'd be fun to taunt her and start to treat her like crap. Its like poking a lion. These are spoiled spiteful girls. It all hits the fan when Sena sets the room on fire, accidentally? On purpose? I'm not sure she knew how far it would go. She won't let Min Ji out, until she starts screaming for help. The other girl escaped easily, so I think her real target was Min Ji. I don't know why.
Min Chul and Yon Soo arrived aroung the same time and tried to each control their sister. At this point the bar owner tells Sena to get out. He tells Yon Soo to come back with money and take Sena with her. Sena takes off.
Outside Min Chul is waiting for Yon Soo. He takes her to eat. She tries to defend Sena, by telling him that she's really kind and soft hearted. He says she's crude and tempermental. I'm with him on this. Still not feeling Sena. But, isn't it like the pot and the kettle?? He could be describing Min Ji. Yon Soo gives up and starts to cry. She figures Sena's lost her chance at stardom. He stands up suddenly, and I think she thought he's said everything there was to say and was leaving, but he comes back quickly with napkins for her to wipe her tears.
This is a very telling moment for him. She may be the first person he's ever admitted to, that his sister is a problem. People may have seen it with their own eyes, but I don't think anyone would dare suggest it to him. He's a guy who keeps his own counsel. Yet, with Yon Soo, he says they both have sisters that others point their fingers at. I don't think he's ever given anyone the satisfaction, to hear him say that he knows his sister is a troubled girl. He tells her they're both blind to their sisters' faults and only feel compassion for them.
He tells her not to ask him for favors anymore. But, he wants to make a deal with her. I don't know what he sees in her that makes him sure that she can help his sister, but he sees something. Maybe its because she loves the unlovable Sena. On the other hand, he can definitely help her sister. He has the tools and wherewithal to give her what she needs. Sounds perfect, right?
Emceema, I had a friend like Narae. She's gone now, but the first time I saw this it made me think of my best friend and miss her so much. There's an old saying, "A good friend will help you move. A REALLY good friend will help you move a body". My really good friend would've helped me move a body. I never asked her to.
I know this sounds a bit harsh, but I think the stepmother needed to take control of that household from the get go. She let them treat her badly, with her son as a witness and lost all credibility. Their father was on her side and she could have taken a different path. I agree that she felt guilty and probably ashamed to be too hard on them, but this is what's left. Total disrespect from them. They'd all have been happier with rules of behavior. She let it get completely out of hand and the only one in the family who feels any sympathy for her is Sun Jae and he's frustrated with her taking the crap she takes. I don't feel sorry for her.
Jasy, I speak from experience as a grandmother of a 14 year old girl, who's parents are divorced and both remarried. It would make it really miserable for her if I, or anyone, pointed out her mother's or father's faults. There's a set of step parents involved too. Its better for the child's emotional survival for me not to bad mouth her mother or any of her caregivers, though I could fill her head with plenty. It would only make her sad. The reality is she has to interact with all of these people in her life. The other reality is that not one of those people would stand for disrespectful or bad behavior. What would be the point of her knowing? When she's older, I believe she'll do her own research if she's interested and she may be. I'll be there then to confirm or deny what she hears. I don't think the grandmother needed to fill Min Ji in on all the gory details. That's all I'm saying. It only made it harder for the kid to assimilate into the family.
I have to go now. I'm at work and should be ashamed.
I'll try to help a little with some summaries. I'm going to the second disc tonight too. It starts to get good now.
Click on this.
I know. I can't help myself.

Re: K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Hello BD Family
I remember we talked about this before, you and I. I think you did an admirable job taking care of your granddaughter all of these years. Not everyone is up for such a big job. When we do that, we do it out of love, like I know you did.
In my case, it was an ugly divorce, not that any divorce is pretty. This kid suffered so much when it happened and I think she still does 12 years later. What ever happens to break a family up, divorce, death of a parent, I think nobody pays the price as much as the child, who has to watch her life crumble.
It was my choice and a deliberate decision to be a safe place for her to come. I didn't bad mouth either parent, but believe me I wanted to fry both of them, for the thoughtless way they allowed her to witness their horrible fights. She'd heard enough by the time it was over. I never wanted to add to her misery. Someday she may want to talk about it and I'll be willing.
That's why I question the grandmother's intentions in filling Min Ji's head with all of the things she did. What good did it do that kid? She went to that house full of hate and many misconceptions about her stepmother. It was very badly handled by everyone. Had her father any brains he would've treated her with kindness and tried to understand her pain. He could've given her a soft place to land. But, look who we're talking about here.
I agree though that Min Ji should've been made to behave better, whatever her feeling about her stepmother. Nobody had control in that house. The father, when he was home, was drunk and yelling and calling her names. The stepmother was all but whimpering in a corner, at every outburst. She always had a pained expression on her face. Sun Jae was treated as the golden boy, but was miserable watching his mother being mistreated. Min Chul came and went like a boarder. Except for his attention to Min Ji, he never spoke to anyone in the family. If he was spoken to, he had selective hearing. Mostly, he selected not to hear and ignored everyone. Who was going to take that girl in hand and teach her the way to live in a family setting. Some family.
Let's see what Yon Soo can accomplish. She'd have to be a miracle worker to fix that bunch. I guess her helping Min Ji is the best we can hope for.
I'm going to watch episode four and see what happens.
I'll be back.

K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Good Morning BB,
You were very wise smoochie, regarding your granddaughter, very wise.
I just want to mention a bit about anyone thinking Minchul and Minji should be able to get over it now because they're adults.
I don't believe that. Feelings are real and a child is always a child as long as their parents are alive no matter what age they are. This is especially so in the Korean household.
About the cold household of Minchul where everyone goes to their room and there is not much communication, my childhood/adult friend lived like this for the same reason, a cheating parent. I saw it played out first hand.
You never forget and it affects you and growing into adulthood doesn't change a thing. Growing up only makes you more aware of the misery you lived through caused by one person.
Forgiveness is great to give for your own peace of mind if for no other reason, but sometimes the hurt and betrayal is too ingrained into a child's very soul especially if the child lived a life of being afraid because of it.
To think that the cheating mother might one day bring her boyfriend into the household was a very real reality to my girlfriend way back then and affected her life as a child and a teen. I can remember having many, many talks when we were teenagers with her about this very same thing. There was no communication between mother and daughter, none, ziltch. It was a terrible thing to watch, you have no idea.
So I understand very clearly Minji's reactions to her stepmother. No, it isn't pretty, but then life isn't always perfect. Some kids get lucky, some suffer.
This being said, I don't know why I feel sorry for the mom in this drama. I think it's because she seems so gentle and I like this actress.
In real life, I wouldn't have pitied her.
I'll let someone else continue on episode 4 but you know I'll be back to discuss Minchul running his finger slowly down Jonsoo's hair and and face as he slowly stoops down to pick up her dropped items.
Just had to get that in...LOL...and they took a ride on the subway...ahh, those glances...
You know I'll be back...
Smoochie, is that little LBH? So cute.

Re: K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Good Morning BD Family
Nsheldon, we all do our best. One reason I didn't badmouth her parents, was because I remember my own mother talking badly about my father and how it made me feel. By her doing that she put me, immediately, on my father's side. I didn't see him the way she did. He was my father and I loved him. I just couldn't do that to my granddaughter. I never wanted her to regret being with me and feeling guilty or resentful, because she couldn't defend her parents.
In the case of Min Ji, I guess the grandmother wasn't thinking of the damage she was doing. The fact that this kid had to eventually live among this family is why I think she was so wrong. She went into it with real malice and bad feelings for everyone, except her brother Min Chul.
Jasy, isn't it something how kids confide in each other, like your friend did? I wonder now, how much my granddaughter's friends know about her life. My granddaughter is lucky in that both of her step parents are excellent. Does she care? Not at all. She'd still prefer to live with her original family intact, no matter how bad it was.
In real life I wouldn't pity the stepmother either. I have a hard time pitying her here. She sold out and I don't get why. The only thing I'm left to think is that she was a timid person all along and thought she needed this man to take care of her and her son, once her husband died. Maybe she was a woman who thought she needed a man to run things. She was alone with her son for ten years before she moved into that house. Had she given it another year, maybe the kids wouldn't have been so offended at her moving in. It would have given them a year to mourn their mother, at least. The father was cruel and unfeeling to have her and the boy come so soon. And she was an idiot to think she'd be welcome.
I did watch episode 4 and I'm coming back to do a quick summary of it. Its all beginning to fall into place now.
I'm at work, but i'll be back with a summary of part of the episode.

Re: K-Drama (SBS): 아름다운 날들 (Beautiful Days)
Anyeong Hasaeyo! Good morning BDF
Here's my attempt to summarize episode 3:
At Narae's place: Narae shampooing her hair outside, looks like a backyard but with a breathtaking view. Yonsoo wants to go out to look for a place to rent so she and Sena could live together. Narae tries to discourage her because Yonsoo will be spending her hard-earned money for college.
At the Bar Owner's place: Yonsoo tried to convince Sena to live with her but she wouldn't listen. The BO (bar owner) came and recognized Yonsoo as someone related to Sena. Sena asked the BO how much she owed him for ther upkeep for the last 5 years. She told Yonsoo to pay the BO before she would even consider living with her. Then she got out in a huff.
While riding the bus, Sena remembered Sunjae as she looked at his student ID which she took secretly from him the last time they met. She called Sunjae and asked him out but he refused
Sunjae went to school but he couldn't get in without his student ID. He saw Sena at the gate waiting for him and showed him his ID. He was forced to go out with him. They played billiard for a while and talked. They realized that everytime they meet, they are both feeling down.
They went to Seoul Tower. SEna told him the reason she wants to go up there is she wants to step on the people who looked down on her but right now, she is more upset with the "betrayer". She asked Sunjae what is his reason and Sunjae said he's stepping on his "greed"......... to live his life freely as he wants.
At Victory Records: President Sun Chun, his doglike assistant, Minchul and his staff are listening to Zero's (the anonymous songwriter on th internet) CD and trying to determine it it's good enough to catch the public's attention. Sun Chun doesn't think so and would prefer to go on with the screening for new singers. Minchul thinks otherwise and told his staff to go find Zero quickly while he's hot in the public eyes.
Sena was desperately scanning the internet at a cyber cafe hoping to contact Zero. She wants Zero to recognize her talent.
Minji and her friend H (I couldn't remember her full name, so let's call her H fr now) were out on the street looking for a place to hangout when they spotted Sena hustling some customers into the karaoki bar where she works. Next scene is Minji and Hfriend in the karaoki room and Sena coming in with a tray of food and gas lamp. She was insulted by Minji and H and H gave her a tip by inserting it on her blouse. Sena wasn't in the mood to play with these two and she lit the money but she didn't realized that the gas lamp overturned and gas spilled on the floor. Instant combustion, flames burst out and the two friends, shrieking, ran to the door. Sena blocked them but only caught MInji. She wouldn't let Minji out. H escaped.
Yonsoo was busy at the store when she received a phone call. Next scene, she was hailing a taxi and when she arrived at the bar place, firefighters have already put out the fire. She found Sena humped in one corner, her face sooty and she was shivering. Minchul came and saw Minji and H. There was a shouting matched between Sena and H/M, then a fight broke out. Yonsoo and Minchul tried to separate them by dragging them away from each other.
The BO was very angry at Sena and told Yonsoo to bring him the money and take Sena away. Sena got angry and dared the BO to report her to the police.
Minchul saw Yonsoo walking and asked her if she has something to say to him. They stopped by a soup shop and had noodles. Yonsoo was crying while defending Sena to Minchul that she is not really a bad person. Tears rolling down her cheeks. Minchul stood up, goes to a nearby table, pick up a tray of tissue and placed it in front of Yonsoo.
Minchul: Do you know what we are? We are blind. We have sisters others point fingers at but we only feel compassion for them. From now on, don't just ask for favors. Let's make a deal.
(music - humming with plenty of strings)
Episode 3 starts at the Soup Shop. (Conversation between Minchul and Yonsoo)
Minchul: Let's make a deal. Teach my sister as a live-in tutor. In exchange..........
Yonsoo: Your sister? How can I.............
Minchul: I'm not talking about just tutoring. If that were the case, I'd have looked for a professional. What I want is someone to move in with us to be there with Minji 24/7. Someone with a reason other than money.
Yonsoo:
Minchul: Since it concerns both our sisters future, I believe we both have to do our best.
Yonsoo: (staring at Minchul)
Minchul: Give it some thoughts because as of now there is no other solution.
Yonsoo: (silent......)
Minchul: Let's eat. Thanks to your outrageous sister, you must be starving. (fade out)
Minchul hailed a taxi but looked at Yonsoo, looking back at him as she prepares to go down to the subway. They looked at each other, Yonsoo bows her head indicating to Minchul to go ahead and take the taxi. She turned around and left. She was about to descend on the escalator when Minchul came passed her, stood a step in front of her and rode with her down the subway.
Blurred images of passing train. They were inside the train, sitting side by side, silent, Minchul pretending to doze off, Yonsoo sneaking a shy look at his face. The image she saw is that of a little boy back at the orphanage smiling at her.
Minchul's turn to stare. Yonsoo was caught looking at him, she turned right away. Close up on Minchul's face ...... unreadable. What was he thinking? They remained silent for a while, each with his/her own thoughts, then Minchul's face broke out into a big smile (dazzling) turns to Yonsoo and asked: "Why don't you wear the coat I gave you? It doesn't have a tag saying I gave it. That's not what I call pride."
Yonsoo doesn't seem to like his statement. Minchul close his eyes with chin up and a trace of a smile on his lips. Camera angle focused on his profile. His hair all over his eyes. He's wearing a turtleneck sweater under a dark suit and the music is soft and lovely ...........
That's all folks! I'm coming back for continuation. I need to walk. My legs are numb and my fingers are uncontrollable.
