Fashion 70's Episode 1

I forgot to comment on the pearl swallowing. As far as I know, if real pearls are swallowed, they dissolve. I read in a pearl book that pearls were once thought of containing some healing characteristics such that people including Mikimoto (the man who gave us cultured pearls) ate one pearl a day to make use of this pearl's characteristic. Also pearls are very delicate gems. One of the caring instructions I read said to be careful eating salad while wearing one's pearls because the dressing could get on it and ruin its surface since most dressings have vinegar. Another instruction warned not to put it next to other gems such as diamonds as pearls scratch easily. So for that woman to bang the heck out of it to separate it from the ring is pretty unbelievable and amazing. By now, that pearl is worthless and if it does pass through that little girl's system whole, then I would think it to be a fake pearl.

---
I do as I please.

Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

Hey pfl, thanks for the explanation of the strategy behind corralling the whole town into the fashion show.
Okay, here's something I do know something about! The Korean Was was in the 50s - Gen. McArthur was part of it until he shot his mouth off one too many times and got pulled out in disgrace.
The fashions in the show also were from the 50s, altho I thought they looked pretty European and skin-exposing for modest Korean women, especially since the country was recovering from decades of Japanese occupation that ended with WWII and was now in the middle of another war. But, maybe there were some really deluxe fashions made available for really rich people.
I'm pretty sure the pearl would have been crushed by her pounding on it that way. If it survived the pounding, it probably wouldn't have dissolved in a one-day trip through a human digestive tract, but it wouldn't have looked so great later. The acid would have eaten away at some of the outer layers, but a pearl that huge would have so many layers it'd take a lot of acid to eat all the way through. Pearls are formed when an oyster has an "irritant" like a grain of sand inside, so it keeps coating the sand to reduce the irritation. Cultured pearls are "seeded" artificially with irritants so that the oysters will produce the coating, called "nacre" to create pearls. (Nacre is basically oyster mucus. Nice, huh?) The number of layers of nacre determines size (altho this is partly based on seed size) and lustre. Nacre is delicate and is easily damaged by, as pfl points out, acid in salad dressing, and things like cologne and hair spray and even body oils. So put real and freshwater pearls on after perfume, cologne and hair spray, and wash them in a warm neutral soapy bath (rinse well) to keep off the buildup that will destoy the lustre over time.

I guess my guess was right. emoticon bbstl, you worked in the fashion industry, right?

Also the people playing the role of the US military bothered me with their lack of care for the Korean civilians. I wonder... in this particular case, was it an accurate portrayal of American military of its time or exagerrated? (almost rhetorical) It's been more than a little while since I took college US History so my memory of the korean war is at best, vague.

Another note, remember when the girl charged her customers $20 for the stolen US goods? How much did that translate to in today's conversion? I remember my parents always told me, how back in the 70s they would be able to order lavish meals in this country (US) for $1-2. So considering it was 50s back then and in war-time...I wonder how much value that $20 was?

About the pearls part, I thought that was a little repulsive - the mother's avarice struck a wrong chord with me. The mother and daughter pair annoy me a little with their theft. I'll post more about that on my ep 1 post later tonight. Thanks ladies though, I've learned more a bout pearls today than I ever have. ;)

I thought the worst thing about the US military was the bad acting! I actually said to the TV, "god, why don't you chew up a little more scenery, there, buddy?" That entire scene was so melodramatic. I wasn't as worked up about the opening scene as SR because I thought it looked like typical 50s jitterbugging young-guy moves, but I do doubt if 50s GIs were high-fiving.
I'll try to find my mom's old travel journals for references to what things cost in the 70s, that would be an interesting comparison. Pooka, it would be really great if your dad would tell us stuff like if a huge sack of stolen army food might get $20 on the black market during the war?
I have worked in the fashion biz and in the jewelry biz and in both in Korea but not in the 70s! Sorry to run on about the pearls. I learn the weirdest stuff in this forum, so I figured I'd just tell what I know in case someone else might like knowing it.

Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

I asked Dad a couple of things (which launched him into an hour of stories) yes they did have time to dance and goof around. He said even when you were stuck in a foxhole in the snow trying not to get shot you still had to laugh and try to have a good time or you would have gone crazy! They were that excited to see Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell and Terry Moore. The also got to see Joe Louis the famous boxer. As for the black market we weren't sure if you would have payed 20 dollars for all that stuff but it would have been close. The guys used to give stuff to the kids like candy and other food they had left over sometimes and some of the adults would try to take it away from them to sell. In times like that people can charge any price they want to , what are you going to do , you can't shop somewhere else so you can either go without or pay up. Not everyone was crooked but hardtimes can bring out the worst in folks.

I am really enjoying this show, but am already falling behind. Will not have a chance to catch up til the weekend....so I will be posting more then .
In the first episode ,I felt sorry fot the 2 boys the most-the one who fell out of the truck ,and the general's son. It was heartbreaking to see the boy get a whipping because his mother's ring had been stolen .

Is it true pearls get digested ?(gulp )

I think small pearls might get digested. Of course (gross-out!) how would you know? It seems to me that old Roman emperors or Egyptian pharaohs used to have them ground into wine or honey as medicine/aphrodisiacs/whatever, and I think I once read about someone letting pearls dissolve in wine. Yah! Don't make me call the International Pearl Council over this!!!

Fashion 70s ep. 1 and 2

Ok, I just finished rewatching episode 1 and then moving onto tonight's scheduled episode, ep2.

Episode 1
First of all since I haven't commented yet, I think the show is great on a lot of levels. When I first saw ep 1 last week, I was surprised at the production level. The cinematography is generally great. I am reminded of a lot of hollywood/theater type scale quality in the production.

The actors and actresses playing the kids are great in my opinion. They're putting in some really great performances. I am still bothered by the portrayal of the main character and her mom, they are pure and simple, thieves. One could consider all the chaos brought upon the two families in episode 1 and 2 as a direct corellation of their actions. I also was annoyed that Kang Hee and her mother used Joon Hee to do their crimes and not to mention take a lot of the blame without doing anything to help her when they all got caught.

I loved the music. As I said in the other thread, and let me copy it for those who are just following this thread.

I love the music though!!! Great orchestral score. What is going on in Korea? How are these composers doing so many cool scores of music while American TV shows continue to have uninteresting, music without heart. The theme song is so great with the fast small string orchestra. It reminds me of Vivaldi with a contemporary twist.

I was going to convert the music to high quality mp3, but I noticed I can't access the files in windows, at least not in CD Audio form. It looks like I'm going to have to buy the OST.

Have you listened to the music yet? Do you know if the theme that plays in the part of the DVD where you select individual chapters in the soundtrack? It's a great string piece of music. I will do more listening, but I think they didn't put it in the soundtrack. UGH. I hope I'm wrong.. Edit: It's track 4! I'm glad this is on the soundtrack. It's a bit cliche of hollywood-esque writing but who cares, it still is a great piece. class blockquote As for more details of the original soundtrack, it was produced by Lee Pil Ho, the music director of Emperor of the Sea who spent the extremely long time of 7 months to insure its top quality. Music lovers can look forward to the movie's theme "Even if my heart is broken" (track 3 and 9) in two different versions sung by Fly To The Sky members Fanny and Brian, respectively. Other recommendations include contributions by Hip Hop/R&B artist Bobby Kim (track 5) and R&B vocalist Park Hwayobi (track 8) as well as instrumental classics performed by the Orchestre National de France. That is from YesAsia. No wonder the music is so good. French orchestra and the person behind EotS music. emoticon I knew I recognized some of the string compositions. It somewhat reminded me of EotS's string pieces.

One thing that bugged me was, remember the chase seen where Peen ran away and what's his name chased after him and fell into the water. There was like this horrible rap piece that played. I thought it was really inappropriate for the scene, not to mention mediocre as far as that genre goes.

But back to the story, the whole pearl incident. Remember when they gave the mom laxative syrup and pot to relieve herself on? She made a comment thanking them for the laxative and for allowing her the opportunity to go on that pot. emoticon lol Anyway I kind of thought it was a glaring oversight that they didn't run the same test on her daughter. What were they thinking?

Episode 2
One word: dramatic! This one had so much going on here with the story turns. I can't believe kang hee got joon hee's parents into trouble yet again and ultimately the "tunnel" incident. This girl and her mom are seriously bugging me with the chaos they are bringing to the fates of the hee family. Anyway that was a dramatic scene, as was where kang hee's mom got whacked on the head. As much as I disliked them, I felt bad for them early on in show, because I could feel the desperation and what drove them to stealing. But at that point when her house was being looted, I admit, I was thinking that one reaps what one sows. If they weren't doing those illegal dealings, they wouldn't have been in such a problematic situation, not to mention the other hee family. Then again this is supposed to be a drama, so I digress!

The first two episodes have been great character introductions and setting up the background context for the rest of the show. I am very interested and excited to see all of it. I don't think I've been impacted as much as any other film/tv series on the horrors and chaos that war brings. These first two episodes really have touched me in that sense. The plight of these people and the trials and tribulations that they must face. Though for all the high production values, one gripe I have so far is, none of the characters are really appealing to me personally or engaging me to a great degree. I know I'll have to wait for the second part of the story to begin when they are in the future. So we'll see. We're off to a good start as far as I'm concerned though.

bbstl regarding the pearls.. No, no, I didn't mean it like that. I thought the pearl bit was interesting. I actually enjoy a lot of the lengthy side topics we get into when discussing these K-dramas. To me, it's these little tidbits that add a lot of substance, context and fun to our discussions! I was just being my overly sarcastic self. :P

Also I do agree with the bad acting at that part, but it's not as bad as some of the K-dramas we're used to. They do always over-act/exagerrate their parts. I'm not really sure why. Perhaps it's what these directors over there want?

pooka
Thanks for that information. It's very interesting! I do understand the excitement value, but I still find it hard to believe 3 army men bumping each other side to side in a dance while peeing. Maybe I lack imagination! Then again, that may be a good thing.

Based on the preview to ep3, it looks like we're flash forwarding to the 70s. Bring your platform shoes and bell-bottoms people. Image Has anyone here actually worn those things?
