Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

Hmmmph! Well. Don't let it happen again. I want Early Bun Warnings next time or you're all dead meat, as they say in MNIKSS (yes, it is unquestionably my favorite K-drama). On that topic, please note my thoughtfulness in informing you that The Lover is on AZN's schedule for the immediate future, consult your local listings.

First of all, we have to take MNIKSS out of the equation for this discussion. In my view it blows Super Rookie and all other comedy-dramas completely out of the water, so comparisons would be unfair. So, I'll be using shows like FWG and Rooftop Room Cat when I'm thinking about how SR stacks up. At that level, the full cast seems great SO FAR. I'm trying to pretend I'm watching for the first time! At this point I want to like Bong Sam because he's handsome, altho (as I've told Pooka repeatedly) his hair looks like a thatched roof on top of his head, and when I first saw his ears I thought "omg! Mickey Mouse hat!" But something's keeping me from liking him. Maybe it's Eric, and the all-American warm feeling for the underdog. It escapes me how you guys think you didn't appreciate Eric in Phoenix, when LSJ was stuck playing the rule-bound guy who couldn't display any emotion but anger, and Ji-Eun could only mope around like a wilted flower - Jung Min provided the spark and the fun and was the only thing that moved the plot forward (well, except for crazy Mi-Ran). You didn't like Jung Min because he was opposed to LSJ, but you can admit Eric did an ok job! If he hadn't been convincing, LSJ would have had nothing to work against.

She's wearing socks because they don't wear out so fast and that makes them cheaper - observe how many other office ladies are wearing them (that's my theory and I'm sticking to it!)

I agree, I probably ate more noodles - with chopsticks! - while I watched this than I ever ate in my life. Luckily, I don't like fried chicken legs.

If you speak so highly of MNIKSS compared to SR, I absolutely can not wait to see that as well!

Well said on the ho kang and bong sam dynamics. Right now bong sam not only strikes me as an antagonist to ho kang's character, but he's just plain acting like a jerk so far.

Yeah, I should probably shut up about MNIKSS before everyone expects it to be SO GREAT and then is completely disappointed. Too late, huh?

I forgot to say, I really love Super Rookie's music! The love songs are heart-wrenchingly beautiful.

Re: Super Rookie

bb, I didn't see that Korean version of Dangerous Liaisons. I don't have AZN. I was just surprised to hear pooka report that BYJ would do such scenes that's why I made a comment. Don't worry, if I knew something risque was showing, I would alert you too. Image Good point on why the mole still exists in the land of plastic surgery, lol.

GLO-ah, so far I think you've liked every K-drama you've seen, right? I don't believe I've read you post you disliked a K-drama. That's cool. You can really enjoy every kind. Like captiva, I had to drop out of Emperor of the Sea.

My K-friend said that the situation presented in Super Rookie (jobs hard to come by) reflects job market conditions in Korea at the time the drama was made. That would explain why Kang Ho's brainiac friend who graduated from Seoul University (I think it's their most prestigious university too) can't even get a job which makes what happened to Kang Ho even more ironic and funny. I don't know if it's because I don't understand Korean that I find their characters funnier too. For some reason, reading the English subtitles, to me, don't sound as corny as if I were to actually hear a character utter such words in English especially when it comes time to confessing their love, etc. I can't explain it.

Ok, these last 2 comments have nothing to do with Super Rookie, but I thought I'd mention it as you guys won't stop mentioning Keng-pil or Gweng-pil. He made me laugh out loudly for a good 10 minutes in 2 scenes on PFL: (1) when he was seasick and was in the boat room on the way to Chief Cha's and Hae-mi's shooting location. Gun Hee decided to scuba dive and went down where Keng-pil was resting and disrobed to change into scuba gear - at which Keng-pil developed suspicion and panicked, thinking Gun Hee had desire for him. Then Gun Hee smacked him back to reality. LOL. (2) when he chanced upon Chief Cha, who was drinking by himself at a tent bar. Keng-pil joined Chief Cha and remarked how Chief Cha looks heart-broken and that Chief Cha is not the kind of guy to be dumped. Keng-pil then went on to gripe about women's caprices and cited an old girlfriend's ridiculous reason for breaking up with him which is: that his head is too big and it blocks the sun from shining on her. He added, "What kind of a reason is that?!" Image

And I thought Mi-Ok wears those socks with pumps because she has no fashion sense - stuck in the 80's! Image As for every time the characters eat in any K-drama, they make me crave and wanna eat Korean food even though I just had dinner before sitting down to watch the drama. Image They just make it look like it's sooo yummy!

oh, LOL Pfl! I'm thinking about the time Gweng-Pil was afraid he'd be fired and offered as a reason he shouldn't be, "I promised 3 goats to my father!" or maybe it was just one goat, whatever. Now, there's a man who knows how to play and not overplay comedy.
I hate to do it, but you're making me - Ow, ow, ow!!! you will see later that Mi-ok has enough fashion sense to not wear socks with pumps. Beyond that, my lips are sealed. Or, rather, my fingers are stilled.

Btw, there's even a Super-Rookie joke in MNIKSS, someone makes a crack about the unlikely occurence of a certain event as "yeah, and maybe there will be a mixup in the computer records" or something similar.

You just jogged my memory. I remember puzzling back then "If she knows to coordinate her wardrobe, why the heck did she dress the way she did before?"

Speaking of bun alert, Cap CTH's buns showed up in my mailbox today.

As for Bong Sam he is also sort of an underdog,he had to work hard to get where he is. Just wait for his story to unfold. And Mi-ok does display a bit of fashion sense later. But I can't make fun of her, I know in the 80's I was wearing my lace ankle socks with my jelly pumps or my leopard print ones(man I wish I still had those shoes!). OUCH!!

As for the music I love the song they play when they show Bong Sam or Mi-ok thinking about the old times. Something about finding another love. I like that on this set they subtitle the songs, so you get the full impact of the songs not just oh, yea that sounds pretty.

MNIKSS is in a different class than SR, I think that might just be from a female point of view. I really like SR , it made me laugh out loud many times but KSS is just different. SR is just fun, and KSS makes you think.

Yeah I've liked (to various degrees) every K drama that's been on AZN so far, in addition to SR.

Come to think of it the other K-movies i've enjoyed as well, the ones on AZN and I've also seen Guns and Talks and JailBreakers. Really enjoyed those as well.

Maybe I'm biased. ;)

I'm sure most of you will disagree with me, but the one that I didn't enjoy was this Korean version of Dangerous Liasons. I watched it only cause it piqued my curiosity, but I didn't really like that movie personally. It just came off as another Dangerous Liasons movie with korean actors, maybe I'm just tired of DL-remakes? I prefered that other Korean movie maybe a month ago? I think pooka saw that one, the one with the daughter of the NKorean leader.

Speaking of bun alert, Cap CTH's buns showed up in my mailbox today. YAY!!!!!!! OMG I just remembered a funny scene that relates to something I shared with you today but NOPE ! Can't tell ya now!

I was laughing again at Gweng Pil when he followed GH to the airport and GH told him to get his luggage and Gweng Pil said he couldn't cause he had Carpal Tunnel When GH asked what it was he told him it was a disease housewives get. So then (sorry I'm laughing now) he said to just push the baggage cart and then Gweng Pil said, "Oh no ! That even makes it worse!" Of course GH did the "ahhhhhsssshht" and started hauling his own luggage.

I wondered if MNIKSS would be as enjoyable to hubby as SR because it was more of a girl's show. I agree with B about Eric's character on Phoenix. I was routing for him and was disappointed when he chose his father over love.
