Re: My Name is Kim Sam Soon

I am going to a party later, and I was afraid of getting behind a la Fashion 70's ,so I have gone ahead to watch episode 1 . I can already tell it is going to hard to stick to the schedule on this one !
The characters & story are hilarious . I won't go into plot too much @ this time ,I'll check back in later tonight for that .
I am amazed at the crisp clear picture of the disc ,and the impeccable subtitles . No disrespect to F 70's ,but as one person put it earlier ,you will not have to do any English to English translations !

The main character will charm us all , and her plain way of speaking may have been shocking to the Korean audience , But she is so funny - ok she's got a great big mouth !!!!!

it's gonna be a great 16 (?) days !!!!!

Re: MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON

Okay, I'm raising the curtain on our official viewing of My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, aka, My Lovely Sam Soon! Since I'm openly this show's #1 fan in the group, I thought I'd better make the effort to at least do the first episode plot synopsis. Sorry it's so long, I just can't stop myself. I've tried to call out important scenes and quotes that we'll need later. Welcome to my favorite show!

For more info, please go to page 23 of the forum's MNIKSS thread and read fendercat's posts. He is a member from Seoul who originally came on to do corrections of the first subs - which must have been just godawful. The Yesasia subs we're using reflect his corrections just about 100%, but his posts also include lots of great incidental info that is so much fun to know. I can't recommend it enough. He did a post for every episode. (I know, what a great guy!) Okay, so here goes:

MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON

Episode 1: Life Is Like A Box Of Chocolates

Over the strains of a Christmas carol, a woman follows a couple down a hotel hallway. Disguised behind large sunglasses, she stands outside their door and fantasizes about what would happen if she confronted the man inside. Instead, the room service waiter interrupts, causing her to run away and fall in the hallway, where she is followed by the man from the room. He recognizes the wailing woman as his girlfriend Sam Soon, who has just caught him cheating on her. They go to the hotel lobby where he says that after three years, it's time to break up. Although she has been crying and listing all the ways in which he's been treating her badly, Sam Soon is shocked and has a loud, foul-mouthed reaction that gets the attention of everyone in the area. Embarrassed, he walks away but while "Silent Night" plays, Sam Soon stands and shouts, "Did you love me at all? For three years you never once told me that you loved me. Did you love me?" He walks back across the lobby to the table and says, "I did love you. I loved the girl with the chubby cheeks. I loved the girl who dreamed of being the best pastry chef ever, the best pastry chef in Korea, visiting every bakery in Paris, a dreamer filled with energy and high spirits, always smelling of sweet confections. I did love you. But this is the extent of my love. So what am I to say if you ask why that is? I'm sorry. But this is it." Brokenhearted and sobbing, Sam Soon runs into a stall in the ladies room and rips off her "waist restrainer' so she can breathe again. She is interrupted by knocking at the door. It's a man coldly informing her that she's in the men's room; he sarcastically asks if she's some kind of pervert or, glancing at her partially buttoned blouse, is she nursing her baby there in the gent's? Now mortified, she slams the door but it gets worse: the man shows that he overheard the entire breakup by telling her, "Next time don't ask for an explanation, just end it with a good kick to the shins. There are plenty of fish in the sea. And men are all the same. The same goes for women."
He is Jin Heon, who was sitting at the table behind Sam Soon's on an arranged date and eavesdropping the whole time, to the point that his own date became furious and threw a glass of water on him, saying, "You know, the word on you is all over town. That you're rude and arrogant. If you don't like blind dates, settle it with your mother. Don't waste other people's time." She stomped off and, dripping, he turned around in time to get a good look at Sam Soon's unfaithful boyfriend.

Jin Heon goes to work the next day at the restaurant he owns only to learn that his pastry chef has returned to Paris for good. He immediately goes off to see his mother at her hotel to negotiate the use of her bakery staff until he can hire a replacement. This visit comes along with both a lecture and getting beaten up by his mother over the subject of his getting married as soon as possible.
Sam Soon visits a matchmaking service only to suffer her own debasement. The interviewer badmouths her family, her profession, even her name and tells her she needs plastic surgery and that men only want young and beautiful women. He says, "I wouldn't even dream of getting married with that face!" Luckily, Sam Soon has just dozed off; when she wakes up she thinks, "Man, that dream was like a mini-series!" She's actually on her way to a job interview.
She gets turned down for the job because she's overqualified, so the head chef doesn't even taste the sample cake she brought. On her way out she stops to sneak a look between the doors of the pastry kitchen when she hears "going in or not?!" As she whips around, her hair gets caught in the buttons of Jin Heon's jacket, since it's he who is in a hurry to go into the kitchen to talk to his mother's pastry chef. Sam Soon screams when he calls for a scissors and cuts her hair off and then kicks her out. A moment later, she comes roaring back and shoves her sample mango mousse cake into his face before running back out.
Angrily cleaning up in the bathroom, she makes the connection that this guy is the same guy who humiliated her in the bathroom on Christmas Eve. At the same time, Jin Heon tastes the cake as he wipes his face off and realizes he's got to find this woman! He follows her into a cab where he tells the cab driver that he's going wherever she's going in a way that makes her more furious than ever:
JH: "Where's the Mrs. (ajuhma, or middle-aged woman) going?"
KSS: "Mrs.? Did you say MRS.?"
JH: "Miss or Mrs., what's the big deal?"
KSS: "It is a big deal. It's bad enough I'm getting old and wrinkled!"
JH: "I'm going where this Miss is going"
After a lot of arguing, they arrange that she will come to his restaurant for an interview the following day.

At the office interview she thinks "Please don't let him remember me" (from Christmas Eve). There follows an interview with JH, the head chef and the restaurant manager, where they eat the many samples she has prepared. JH is impassive and stares coldly throughout the process but the others are complimentary and warm and Sam Soon has a chance to explain how her life and work philosophies are intertwined. She says that she believes that, as in the movie "Forrest Gump", life is like a box of chocolates. Now that she has grown more mature she knows that, "It's my box and I have to eat everything in it. It's just a matter of when I eat them. But it's different from the past. When I was a child, I'd eat anything without reservations. But now I think about it and hesitate a lot. I know that some are filled with bitter rum. The only thing I hope is that the ones with bitter rum are gone, that I've eaten them all in my 30 years. That's it." By the end of her words, Jin Heon's face has softened and while he continues to stare intently, he almost appears to smile.

Sam Soon is hired but she makes a condition that she be called Kim Hee Jin rather than Kim Sam Soon. Jin Heon looks at her in befuddled amazement:"And why should I call you Hee-Jin when your name is Sam-Soon?" "What if I call you Sam-Sik? Would you like that?" "Sure, if my name were Sam-Sik, and not Jin-Heon. But, unfortunately, my name isn't Sam-Sik."
He says, any name but Hee-Jin, any other name. Sam Soon says, then find yourself another patissier. He caves, and Hee-Jin it is. Her introduction to the staff is as Hee Jin and she looks appraisingly at the male staff and thinks, "I can manage dating guys 10 years younger than me". But the head waitress makes it an issue that at 30, Sam Soon is the eldest of the staff; then her thoughts about her coworkers become "You're all dead meat."

On a plane, we meet two young women returning to Korea from the States. One tells the other her "sad divorce story" and the other says she's been in the states for 3 years and is now a med student. Her name is Yoo Hee Jin.

This was so funny emoticon I love her spunk! The bathroom scene was hilarious! I got a kick out of what I assume is going to be an old SS flame, Hee-Jin, on the plane going up to the guy that was staring and wondered which one of them he fancied when he was just staring because they were drunk and being loud. emoticon

It's still early out west.

I'll be watching this in maybe less than an hour so I'll be back in maybe 2 hours to comment on the first episode. I can not wait!

MNIKSS Ep 1

Did anybody notice that one of the onlookers (woman) sitting by one of the tables in the hotel lobby clapped after KSS' ex-BF had just told her the speech of how his love stops there? She must have thought the scene has ended and clapped for the actor playing the cheating ex-BF, but the director didn't do the scene over and just used it, anyway.

bb, good job on the summary. I didn't even need to re-watch it. LOL. I enjoyed your interpretation which clarified some scenes for me, actually. The version I saw when KSS was taking issue with Jin Heon about calling her ajuhma (Mrs/Ma'am) in the taxi said "I'm not old and I don't have wrinkles, so where do you get madam from?" What is HB showing on your avatar?

Yeah, KSS is supposed to be a vulgar (foul-mouthed) character.

I do as I please.

I wondered about that woman clapping! I thought she was a confused person who thought KSS and the boyfriend were putting on a show. I couldn't figure out any other reason that someone would do that, yours is a good one!

Actually, I think the version you saw of the "ajuhma" argument makes more sense with the way her face looked and her general attitude. She doesn't think she's getting old and wrinkled, and she does think, where does this kid get off calling me ajuhma???

Everything I've read about the KSS character refers to her being "rough around the edges", foul-mouthed, using bad or coarse language frequently. Hilariously (to me, considering the amount of sex talk and action we have on our sitcoms - but no swearing, please!), that all appears to have been censored out of the English version for YesAsia. She is also described as direct, plain-spoken, unaffected and willing to speak up for herself.

Today for April Fool's Day, HB is shilling rice bowls on my avatar. Maybe I'll leave him up for the whole weekend, he looks pretty funny.
