Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

O....M...G emoticon I had a revelation after tonight's episode, but then again I could be way off emoticon Mtsumoto is really Korean ... and ... is the Royal Chef's descendant, that is, he's Sung Chan's real father. Which is why he wants to restore Un Ahm Jung to his care. Like I said, I could be way off, but it does present an interesting possibility.

Heart-wrenching death scene tonight with BJ< SC and JH all present. But with all the "I'm sorry, it's all my fault" Ijust wanted to say shut up, but I guess it was just their way of expressing overwhelming grief.

Well Bong Joo has finally been beat down to the very bottom. At least now he doesn't recoil at the sight of Sung Chan. Father was right ... together they could be a formidable team. Now I hope it's time to put Min Woo, Yoon and Yong back in their place, so bad, gloating with champagne toasts over their "victory" you're right bb, they're just patsies for Matsumoto.

Well so much to talk about with tonight's show, but I'm shot. Off to sleep.

PS ... Never mind emoticon After a refreshing sleep I just remembered that they showed SC's flashback to his father dying in the forest....but who is Matsumoto really? and what is his connection to Chef Oh? The picture of him standing with chef Oh appeared in last night's show and again in the previews ...hmmm.

emoticon laars, I had a similar thought about Matsumoto being Korean. I wonder if that actor is speaking Korean with a Japanese accent (he will forever be "Kevin" from Prince's First Love for me). The photo of him with Chef Oh is very intriguing, I wonder if there's a revenge motive involved in taking over UAJ. Well, only two more eps and we will know all!

Poor Bong Joo, he couldn't even manage to be in the room when his father died. I do feel sorry for the guy, he's in way over his head.

I agree, there was too much "It's my fault" for me, too. Thanks very much for the explanations about the charcoal/salt and what happens when the tax guys come in. I don't know what "jang" means, I'm assuming it is bean paste - but then again, we didn't hear about it when they had the crisis with the guy from North Korea. I will ask my teacher.

Does it make any sense that the chef who cooks all world cuisines won't beat SC? Why would SC not tell BJ the whole backstory about Matsumoto? Can BJ's late appearance make any difference to SC's planned dishes and ingredients? Oh well, it is a K-drama! And BJ did finally do the right thing.

BTW, bang-up funeral! That was great to see.

happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy, happy. emoticon

Well, I've never seen a kdrama where just about all the issues are ressolved like this one. Best feel-good drama in recent memory.

Bong Joo saves the day, proving himself and yet is still reborn a humble, caring person through all his hardships, ready to start over again learning the basics.
Sung Chan has found himself and seems to have found purpose.
Yoo Hee seems content to wait.
Jin Soo has her dream job and is off on a new adventure, this time permanently by SC's side.
Matsumoto turns out to be an honorable good guy after all, offering to help out any way he can.
And all the bad guys are properly humble and are reconciled to the big family that Un Ahm Jung is.

I agree bb, that was an awesome funeral procession ... like stepping back in time to another world. didn't the chanting sound a little like native American chanting?

Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

yes, it did. I was once told that there's a theory that Koreans and Native Americans are related (and, I assume, Mongolians). My source, a Korean, looked completely Native American. He said that their separation dates back to a time when the Bering Strait was much lower and the Native Americans walked to Alaska across a chain of land, and then kept going south until all the Americas were peopled. I dunno! It's a heck of a theory (aka, everything is really Korean).

I also found out about jang. The process is the one we saw in Ep. 24. Beans are boiled in salted water and then drained. The water becomes one kind of jang (something like kanjang) and is used as a base for sauces. The beans get ground and the paste is formed into a square using a mold, and then stored. It is (something like) dwaejang (sorry, not sure I got the names right) and is the base for the bean pastes. I'm assuming that Chef Oh's special sauce, since it came out liquid, was from the water form of jang.

A great ending! I completely agree that they went out of their way to tie up almost all the loose ends, unlike other shows. I still do wonder what the heck happened to Madam Jo. They even left open a door for a sequel (Matsumoto says he'll be back, SC discovering the secret sauce at the country restaurant). KRW is in the army now, so that won't happen any time soon! emoticon I really liked the way they made a full 24 episodes without a real love triangle to motivate anyone. The food and scenery were beautiful and I recommend this show to everyone!

City Hall starts on Sunday, November 1st!

Funny, I've long believed in that theory ... except for the part about everything being Korean emoticon
Just that all these people were once part of the same tribe at one time, before going their separate ways and developing their own cultures based on what they had in common before.

Glad you mentioned the scenery, since that was one of my favorite parts of this show, especially going to all the markets, fish markets and farms and scenes from common ordinary life. Kind of like a travel show, but with purpose.

I too thought about the sequel when Matsumoto said that. They sure set the stage for a comeback what with BJ and SC going away like that. I can just see the triumphant return of the brothers to rescue an ailing Un Ahm Jung again. And Madam Jo returns too to rescue the jang. (Funny the way she returned and almost immediately disappeared again - but I guess that was part of the story with BJ's insistence of doing away with their homemade jang, there was no need for her.)

I do hope they do a sequel, I'm already experiencing withdrawal symptoms emoticon
A good one like this sticks with me a while.

Re: Always Current Discussions of Different K-Dramas: K-DRAMA VIDEO CLUB!

Saw this KDrama a few months ago, and KRW never fails to deliver, despite some comments I read elsewhere that his performance was "lackluster".

My biggest complaint was in the ending, however. We all know that KDramas don't have a great track record when it come to a clean crisp ending (rather they do the "let's wrap everything up in a tidy bow" type "throw in everything but the kitchen sink" endings we are so accustomed to). The problem as I see it is with the "knife". After all that jazz in the beginning regarding the knife and how it will go to the successor, this drama goes with the "let me travel to learn more" ending, with the knife as a minor footnote at the end. What a disappointment. Both chefs go off to roam the world, and the restaurant is run by the "second string"? Huh!?!

How do I come by such an opinion, well, after watching this TV drama, I viewed the original Korean movie it is based on, namley Le Grand Chef.

Yes, the TV drama does follow the movie closely in parts, such as the charcoal tree, the cow going to slaughter, and the knife. Only thing, in the movie, the guy gets the girl, AND the knife. The losing chef goes away. The whole movie is based around winning the knife and proving that the other chef is the true decendant.

I did think that the cast was much better in the TV drama, particularly the father, and the reporter (although there's nothing wrong with Lee Hana as the reporter in the movie version). The other love interest does not exist in the movie. And no, I did not care for the reporter's boss. I think they threw him in as comic relief. Oh yeah, the "old guy sidekick" to the father plays an entirely different role in the movie. In fact, I think he is the only original cast member from the movie to also do the TV show.

Had I not seen the movie I would have liked this more. Such is life. Image

BTW, if I may suggest a future KDrama for the group, try "Two Outs, Bottom of the Ninth Inning". I'm watching it now, and it's very entertaining. Topical, contemporary, funny, but not just about baseball. If your NOT into sappy love stories, then this should be on your list.

That is so funny bb. Love the title: "Le Grand Chef2 : Kimchi War".

Great to hear from you Hantaejun. Although otherwise satisfied with the ending, you raise a good point about the succession issue, both brothers abandoning the restaurant to be run by-??? and they kind of lost the whole issue of the knife even though everyone kept walking past its showcase in the last episodeemoticon .

But while the many competitions were an important (and exciting) element in the drama, I think the producers used it more as a means to an end, turning the story into a morality play. In the end, winning was not so important as family, friends and relationships and most importantly , the food itself! emoticon

I definitely have to see the movie - I had no idea of its existence, thanks for turning us on to it. 9 end, 2 out has been on my must see list for a while ... so many dramas, so little time.

Don't be a stranger Hantaejun, check in on us once in a while.
btw, you would have enjoyed our viewing of Iljimae last spring - have you seen it?
